“Rossi knows how to take care of his guests”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2012

We drove to Playa San Miguel from Nosara. The drive was easy. We topped a ridge with the view of this immaculate beach stretching out before us and knew we had found the spot. The Flying Scorpion is everything you could hope for in a place to crash, surf, eat, party, and relax. Great open air bar. Giant cozy hammocks everywhere. A great long beach break right out front. The hosts Rossi & Amanda are very welcoming. Great food, clean rooms, laid back atmosphere. You may come here and never leave.....

Following a recommendation of a well-traveled guy we met on our Costa Rica trip, my husband and I cut short our stay at Playa Brasilito and drove south to serene Playa San Miguel to stay at the Flying Scorpion. What a great decision... this place is such a positive contrast to the touristy beach you find in Playa Brasilito or Playa Flamingo. The hotel and the restaurant sits right on the Pacific beach unspoiled by the hotel chains and loud bars. It's absolutely beautiful and tranquil.
The place is ran by a lovely couple who are extraordinary hosts and make you feel at home right away. Literally, while we called for a room pretty much on a very short notice right before the new year, Rossi was kind enough to offer us to stay at his house which has a breathtaking view of the ocean. It was such a relaxing and beautiful place, we wished we had another few days to stay there. From other guests who stayed at the hotel we learned that they've actually cancelled their stay at other places just because they fell in love with Rossi's and Amanda's Flying Scorpion. If you want to get away from the noise and touristy stuff, this place is a must.
They have a very friendly staff and great cooks, including Rossi and Amanda, who will blow you away with their homemade lasagna, fish, guacamole, ice cream, and a seriously tasty breakfast.
And if you don't feel like relaxing in a hammock on the beach or taking a walk on the shore, try surfing. Connie is a great instructor and such a shining personality. And join her for star watching too, you'll learn a lot.
It's a hidden gem ran with love and care. Truly a unique and wonderful place to enjoy in Costa Rica.

As a 6-year resident of Costa Rica, it has been disappointing at times to witness the pace of development that has changed the landscape and character of this great country. Playa San Miguel has miraculously evaded this development...so far. What you get is a huge expanse of raw beach flanked by tide pools on one end and a beautiful estuary on the other. The greatest part is that you might be the only person in sight. The Flying Scorpion is a little gem of a hotel right by the beach. Rossi and his staff cook up some amazing food - everything we had there was superb, especially the sushi. Rossi himself is a big personality and goes out of his way to make sure you enjoy your stay. The rooms are cozy...simply and tastefully decorated. If you really want to get off the beaten path, I highly recommend Playa San Miguel and the Scorpion.

Well I have to agree with everything my friend Lee H wrote as we got to meet him and his girlfriend Michelle on our tranquil rendezvous to the Flying Scorpion. Lee is correct in that you will wonder if the end of the earth is coming when you are driving there, BUT then you cross into an oasis that might seem like a mirage. Laura and I wanted a place that was away from the beaten path and Rossi accommodated this request with his fabulous place at "The Flying Scorpion". There were several couples(Lee and Michelle included) which made the socializing fun, but not crowded. What is better than walking out onto two (2) miles of beach with incredible surf and sand only to see these couple and no other people. If chef Ramsey where visiting HE would be impressed with the food. Ingo and Connie will help you through adventures like surfing and more. We plan to return with our 11 year old daughter so she can see the sea turtles and learn to surf. We played softball with the locals that Saturday which was enough comedy to make your spleen erupt. My parents previously lived in Costa Rica. I have literally been to every corner of this country and the Flying Scorpion is truly the gem of this country. There is no commercial properties that will drive you crazy. This is absolutely a paradise that you cannot miss. We are planning to return in a couple of months with the little one. OH, and can you say affordable. We ate like kings, drank like alcoholics (the good stuff too, the bar selection is better than most places in the states), slept like the dead (in those wonderful hammocks on the beach) played glow in the dark Frisbee next to a bomb fire, and met incredible people from everywhere. Total cost for this 5 day and 4 night escape less than $500 which probably would have been considerably less had I not drank too much rum and bought drinks for everyone all night LOL. Seriously, we had reservations to stay in Lake Arenal for 3 nights. I called to cancel a night to stay at the Flying Scorpion an extra night. Arenal said I would still be charge for the room since it was last minute. My only response "charge it, cause were staying in paradise at least one more night".

Room Tip: Ask Rossi about staying in his house

Simply put, if you go to Costa Rica and don't go to the Scorpion - you're missing out.

It's hard to know where to start with such an incredible place and so many incredible pieces, but to start from the beginning would be on your way there. If you take Rossi's directions through the country (they may sound a little wierd, but they all make sense enroute), you'll go through one of the most beautiful parts of Costa Rica and have a truly memorable drive. Once you get there, you'll head straight to the restaurant/bar and instantly feel like you're home. Rossi and Amanda are incredible hosts and they'll really go out of their way to give you the best experiance possible, often even at their own expense. I could name countless ways Rossi bent over backwards to be a great host when we were there - if you can take a ride to his farm and waterfall he'll amaze you with his local knowledge too! If you're lucky enough you'll be there during the months when Ingo and Connie are there - I'd challenge anyone to have a conversation with them and not smile, they are two of the most incredible people I've ever met. The troop of Weinmaraners will tame any dog-hater and they're incredibly well behaved! Then there's the people... I don't know how, but the Scorpion is a magnet for great people - go there and I promise you'll meet people you'll never forget (above and beyond the great staff).

The food... even if you didn't know Rossi goes to the lengths of locally sourcing everything (almost entirely organically), and only selects sustainable things (no Tuna on the Sushi menu)... when you try the food you'll be blown away. The menu is big enough that you could stay there a year and never get bored, and the food is incredible enough that you'll have a tough time trying anything but you're first dish (you'll just want to keep ordering it!). On top of that, if you like to drink - what a bar!

The Cabinas... they're perfect! They not huge by any means, and there's no AC, but you don't need any more room and you definitely don't need AC. There are screen windows on both sides of the room and a great ceiling fan, it was literally perfect. The washrooms are big and have a really great shower too. But then, if you look around you'll start to notice all the details - this place is special, and it's truly loved. There is a ton of wood and what's incredible is that it's all fallen trees that were harvested, nothing is cut down... and it all comes from Rossi's farm! The only thing ever cut are some teak trees which are non-native and he didn't plant. The corner shelves are teak!!! and they're perfectly sized for keeping you organized. The beds have the softest sheets and they have incredibly soft bath towels........ wierdly enough too they were the best smelling linen I've even experianced too - even after a few days of use. Perfection is in the details and this place is so far beyond perfection it'll blow your mind!

Then there's the beach. The only thing more incredible than the beach is the Scorpion itself, but I've never seen a beach as beautiful as this in my life... not even Ernest Hemmingway's famous Pilar Beach can hold up to this place. On our last day there, a Saturday after all the Ticos in-the-know poured into the area for the weekend... there were 6 people in sight at around noon!!! (that includes my girlfriend, and I).

Trust me, just go there... quickly... I can't wait to get back!

I have to echo everyone else's rave recommendations - The Flying Scorpion is a great place.
After a week driving down the Pacific Coast we landed here and stayed for the remainder of our trip. It's a bit of a haul to and from the airports, but you can get to Liberia in less than three hours no problem, and it's very much worth it. Playa San Miguel is a hidden gem, far away (figuratively) from the touristy beaches up north. You can do whatever you want at your leisure, Senor Rossi and Amanda (and the wonderful staff) will help you set up whatever adventure you want. The food has been raved about and it's all true. The prices are a significant notch down from what you'll find at Samara or Tamarindo or wherever.... the accommodations and the beach are better, prettier, more remote, more relaxing, SAFER.

It does have two modern conveniences every experienced traveler requires - wi-fi and the NFL package on the big screen (projector, at the bar). You can even overlook the fact that it's run by a Philly fan.

One more thing of note - the fishing can be downright fantastic if things work in your favor. Mid December I had a nice snapper from the beach / rocks and over a dozen roosters and span mackerel from the panga. Also saw a few blitzes from the beach that I couldn't get out of my hammock in time for.

Best of luck to Rossi, Amanda, and the staff, and to everyone that makes it to the Flying Scorpion. It is well worth the trip.

My husband and I just stayed at The Flying Scorpion for 3 nights and had an absolutely incredible time. The best part of the experience, by far, was the people we met both working and staying at The Flying Scorpion. The warmth of the climate was certainly reverberated through the character of the owner and staff. After staying in various other parts of Costa Rica, we were weary of over-price tours and hotel accommodations. Upon arriving at The Flying Scorpion we were relieved to find that far and away the best part of our trip was very affordable. Despite traveling on a very tight budget, we were able to experience amazing hiking to a waterfall, kayaking through mangroves and surfing the amazing beaches of Playa San Miguel. And none of these experiences would have been even half as fun without the unbelievable company of the people drawn to this uniquely amazing place.
