“Truly a home away from home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2011

I found this hotel by accident in a travel forum and what a lucky day that was. It takes you forever to get there because you have to take a very long dirt road but it's quite worth it. We were supposed to stay a night on our way south and ended up staying there 3 nights. And only left because we had reservations elsewhere that were non refundable.
We didn't explore the area as we took the time to rest, read, eat and do nothing else. The view is truly breathtaking and the food is delicious (we asked Zene to cook us dinner).
Zene and Henner are the best hosts and will go the extra mile to make their guests confortable. Thanks guys and sorry for the delay in reviewing!

Hotel owners Zene and Henner welcomed my husband and I to their hill top resort with smiles, hugs and cold drinks. Getting to their paradise on earth is a bit like an E ticket ride at Disneyland, but that made it all the more exciting and fun. When the view from their hillside retreat unfolds in front of you, you know you have arrived! From their vantage point, miles of coastline unfold in front of you like a ribbon of bliss. The beaches below are pristine, and you can walk a long way, without passing any other lucky souls. From the infinity pool, your cares melt away, and it's just the delights of the day that move front and center. "Relax" is the word that comes to mind, over and over again. This is not a pretencious resort. Here, you are the center of attention, and yet it's quite possible to just retreat, sleep or read a good book, and relax as you'd like. Hammocks, umbrellas, a pool table, board games, a bouganvilla draped shower, and friendly family dogs make you want to make this your new home, if only for a brief period. Ocean view rooms are bright, clean, well appointed, each with a fab outdoor shower. How many people have that at home? Did I mention that they cook? With a little advanced notice, your hosts will prepare meal fit for the culinary adventurer. Try them out and enjoy the local palate.
Zene and Henner became friends of ours, and we couldn't be happier or luckier. You'll feel the same, after a visit to their piece of paradise.

We first met our gregarious host, Henner, at the beach bar in San Miguel, and followed his red Landrover up the mile and a half winding dirt route to Cristal Azul. Zene was waiting with a warm welcome, and menu suggestions for the dinner she had arranged. The rancho, infinity pool, gardens and breathtaking vista, with views all the way to Cabo Blanco, were ours (four of us) alone for our four day stay. It was sublimely peaceful. Henner and Zene were ready to arrange as many--or as few--activities (or meals) as wanted. If the beach was the choice, we had the nearly deserted long stretch of Playa San Miguel below. Venturing further south: a memorable simple lunch at Tanga's on the beach. Bird sightings at a water hole just down the road rivaled those in any reserve.
Cristal Azul is not easy to get to--and very hard to leave. We'll be back.

My boyfriend and I travel quite a bit and I have to say this was hands down one of the nicest places we have ever stayed. There are so many factors that I can go on raving about when it comes to Cristal Azul. It is absolutely elegant within the most beautiful and secluded rustic setting. The place is small and intimate. The resort sits on top of a cliff that overlooks the ocean and village below. Each guest gets their own villa which is made up of one big bedroom with a bathroom and private outdoor shower. The shower is amazing! And the villas boast floor to ceiling glass sliding doors that overlook the ocean and land below. The pool area and cabina, which sits above the pool hosts a kitchen, pool table, dining table and couches/hammocks to lie in. The pool is absolutely breathtaking. The views alone from EVERYWHERE at this place are unlike any I have ever seen. Somehow Zene and Henner (the owners) have really managed to make this place an oasis. I can't stress enough how well done the whole place is, you feel completely comfortable and pampered without taking away from the stunning elements of Costa Rica. It is not like any other beach resort. Not to mention Zene and Henner are so nice and easy to work with. They will help you every step of the way to create an agenda of activities that fits your likes and schedule making it a wonderful adventure/vacation spot. And the best part of all, it is unbelievably reasonable in price. You really get every pennies worth!

This place has the best view i've ever experienced, i've been around several places in Costa Rica, but none of them compares to the beauty and calm experienced while staying there.

Wake up in the morning take a shower almost in the wild, then head out to an amazing view whoa!!!!.
The pool and the "rancho" are just lovely, such a tropical experience, the attention and care of the owners makes you wanna' come back anytime asap!
Thanks for such an amazing vacation

The 10-mile view of the Pacific and surrounding countryside is stunning, service is beyond excellent - friendly, lots of suggestions on what to do, delicious meals planned around our wishes, infinity pool, outdoor showers. We felt pampered and well-cared for.The road to the B&B requires 4WD.

My husband and I are professionals from the UK and we know the area very well as we have been visting the area for business during the last 4 years .We don't know how on earth we didn't know of Cristal Azul before hand -perhaps because it is so well hidden away from the road and a bit further to the places we normally have looked at . We had 5 days at Cristal Azul last January 2011. Without a doubt this indeed peaceful and gorgeous looked after place is the first choice for those staying in the area if you want some sophistication and comfort, combined with appreciating the beauty of the area. We have a good knowledge of what type of accomodation is available in the area and have struggled badly to find high standards .Cristal Azul is the one single exception without exaggeration. Check on the condition of the road up to the hotel but definitly a 4 x 4 is essential though the hosts were planning to do some more repairs to it . Zene and her husband Henner are enchanting , genuinely warm and the most attentive hosts and their lovely dogs are very well educated . One cannot find accomodation with those views and that sunset anywhere else in that area and another plus -unsual in that area- is the fact that they have a very good catering service.
