“Nice hotel for visiting Cinque Terre”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2014

We booked this hotel through Groupon (France) as we wished to visit 'Cinque Terre' on the Ligurian coast and also wanted to visit some of the rural surroundings of Sarzana including the archeological site of Luni. The attractive Groupon deal for two persons offered three nights with breakfasts and one meal, all for 150€. Before buying the Coupons we checked pictures of Al Santandrea on the internet and also with Google Earth Streetview. So we knew that its location was surely not superb but we would not be entitled to complain about that specific aspect afterward.

The hotel was easy to find. On Al Santandrea's website a clear explanation is given how to find the hotel in case the GPS is not correct. We arrived May 12, 2014 the receptionist was very kind and helpful and gave lots of useful tips for our short stay. The hotel room was clean and with first class bedding, but it already was quite warm. Unfortunately because of environmental regulations the air-conditioning could not be switched on before the end of May. Opening the window to get some fresh air was also letting in lots of noise from the main street on which side our room was located. After explaining our problem to the lady manager next morning we were offered a room on the back side which was quite a relief.

The meal we took in the hotel was very tasteful, for each course we had a choice between three dishes. We much appreciated the local specialties. Wine was very affordable adding to our positive appreciation of the restaurant. The next day we had a very good dinner at La Compagnia dei Balenieri a specialty restaurant in the center of Sarzana.
The third evening, after having visited Cinque Terre we were so tired that we were glad to be able to have dinner at Santandrea and not to have to go the center of Sarzana.
All in all if we decide to visit the area once more we will return to this hotel and restaurant.

We ended up at Sant'Andrea as we were in desperate need of some accomodation in Sarzana that night and this seemed to be the only hotel with available rooms.
The location is not fancy AT ALL! The hotel building overlooks a heavily traficked and noisy road and it is next to a gas station. If you are not there with your own car, you'll have trouble to get to Sarzana downtown (let alone anywhere else). The room walls are also quite thin and you'd better not have a snoring neighbour...
But the bed was extremely confortable (which is not obvious in hotels) and with the shutters closed the road traffick did not bother us too much. The staff was nice and helpful and I liked the breakfast buffet a lot: not as rich as in other hotels but everything was fresh and nicely presented.
Next time I will certainly book my accomodation in Sarzana (which is by the way a lovely and relaxing town!) but all in all I cannot complain about Sant'Andrea.

In order to get easier to go to Cinque Terre, we changed our previous hotel to Al Sant'Andrea. It takes about 15mins to La Spezia by car, from there take a train to 5 villages. The hotel is very standard, not fancy, but practical. The only thing bothered us was the AC, it didn't cool down enough, I woke up sometimes during the night. The staffs are very helpful and kind. We enjoyed there.

We arrived at Hotel Al Santandrea one month too early by accident. Rosanna, the hotel Manager was so helpful, nothing was a problem to help us. We were so embarrassed that we had made the mistake in our haste to make travel arrangements from Australia. She phoned Expedia to rectify the problem, which unfortunately was very lengthy and costly to the hotel, and she allowed us to settle into our room before it was all sorted. She even printed out train schedules for us for the next day to travel to Cinque Terre. Breakfast was in the adjoining cafe. The owner was such a character and we looked forward to our next visit for breakfast. The town of Sarzana is not to be missed. It was a real treat to walk the narrow streets of the walled city, take in a wine in the piazza with locals and enjoy the balmy summer evenings there. Would definitely recommend this hotel. It is just 10 mins walk to the train station and easy access to Cinque Terre.

Very convenient location to southern Liguria and northern Tuscany, pretty close to the autostrada. The town of Sarzana itself was the nicest surprise--lovely downtown! We ate well there for very reasonable prices, and in the summer there was a carousel on the piazza for the kids.
The hotel served its purpose. Very helpful front desk staff, nice lobby and a great pastry shop attached. The brioches for breakfast were delicious! (Breakfast not included in prices, but normal bar prices for pastry/coffee.) The rooms and beds were comfortable enough for our purposes. We were just looking for someplace decent to sleep as we visited the towns in the area and this was it. Not luxurious, dated decor, and the bathroom could definitely use some maintenance/updated but it WAS a stand-up shower box which is nice for Italy!
So, if you are just looking a clean decent place to spend a night or two, this is it. If you want your hotel to be something to enjoy/spend time in--this is NOT it.

After arriving in La Spezia without reservations, we found the hotels filled. Helpful staff at one of the full hotels suggested we try Sarzana, one exit southeast of the La Spezi exit on the Autostrada A12. We were warmly welcomed by the kind and helpful owner/manager Rossana, who arranged a room for us. It was clean, quiet and well priced. We got recommendations on restaurants for dinner and assistance with our plans to visit the Cinque Terre the following day.

The train station is a short 10-minute walk from the hotel. The trains run frequently from Sarzana to Cinque Terre and cost the same as from La Spezia. Just past the station is Old Town Sarzana with a medieval castle and a lovely old downtown area with shops and restaurants. Rossana gave us the name of one of their favorite restaurants, and it was exceptional.

From Sarzana, we traveled to the south of France but we made sure to stop again at the Al Santandrea on our return trip. We definitely plan to stay there in future trips that take us to or through the area.

Key points:

* The hotel is on a busy street, but both times we stayed it was very peaceful and quiet in the rooms, which were clean and comfortable.

* It is an 8 to 10 minute walk to the train station; a few minutes more to the center of the old town. Take some time to visit the old town -- it is quite charming.

* The staff were uniformly friendly and helpful, which adds so much to the hotel experience.

Room Tip: Both times we were on the second floor on the back side of the hotel (away from the street) and it w...

My wife Liz and I came upon Al Sant'Andrea after many hours driving throughout Italy. We were very fortunate as we received a warm greeting from the staff. Rossana was a delight and extremely helpful. There had just been a major storm in the area and she was kind enough to take the time to discuss our alternate routes to various locations that we planned to visit and gave us a map. The accommodations were fine, a comfortable room and a very good breakfast. What a great find at a reasonable rate. When we return, we would definitely saty there again.

Thank you,
Richard

Room Tip: Speak with Rossana or her husband. They will be sure to take good care of you.
