The meal we had at this restaurant was the best we had during our eleven day stay in France. Five course and wine for just over 75 euro was exceptional value

“Food generally very good, service a tad slow, needs a ceiling fan in hot weather”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2013

Received a friendly welcome on arrival and offered seating outside. Perhaps foolishly, we opted for inside - and away from the open windows, at the height of summer with evening temperatures well above 30C. Had aperitifs, which we Ok, although the white wine was exceptional sweet. Besides a la carte, there are two choices of fixed menus, one at €25, the other at €35. The latter is better value. Three of us had the €25, with choice of different (large) salads and escargots, followed by either fish, beef or porkI all 3 were reported as very good. I had the €35 menu starting with hot and cold scallops with salad, which was also good. I then had the lamb with mashed potatoes and vegetables, which could have been better. The lamb was a little tough but the dinner, which had been nicely cooked seemed to have been sitting before delivered to the table. The food was only warm. The portions are not enormous, thankfully, but sufficient. We then opted for a selection of local cheeses, which were really excellent. Then, as we began to flag, pudding - excellent light lemon meringue pie, crime brûlée, and ice cream. The restaurant has a good wine list, including a very good Cotes de Beane, which we had, once it returned to room temperature. Problems? 1. Taking our orders and being served was a tad slow. They seemed short-staffed. We arrived at 7,30. It was 8.50 before the final main arrived. 2) dishes for the same course did not arrive at the same time, sometimes more than 5 minutes later, including the lamb dish that arrived warm, instead of hot 3) in the summer heat, the restaurant needs a ceiling fan. The atmosphere was close to unbearable. A terrace is available but it's right next to the street, which can be noisy, and near the speakers that sometimes emit music with an unwanted thumping base. 4) what is it with serving a reasonable quality bottle of Burgundy cold? How can customers possibly taste the wine? Sacrilege! I should have sent it back.

The inside decoration highlights the film industry, including old movie cameras, photos of US movie stars, and other paraphernalia. Thus, Le Clap. More an avant garde bistro than a setting for a comfortable evening with friends and family, but I guess it may simply be a matter of taste.

So, pleasant enough, especially if you are in pleasant company, but the experience could have been better.

“A very welcome addition to Argenton's stock of restaurants”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2012

Le Clap is situated just off the town's main square, on a quiet street. Most passers-by are on their way to the cinema and there is little car traffic, which makes dining outside very pleasant on a nice evening
.
We had a very good dinner, with two interesting starters and an accurately cooked good quality piece de boeuf, a good cheeseboard and pleasant desserts. We shall definitely be visiting again and would recommend it to others
