“Really a relax & enjoyable Onsen Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2015

Show your hotel reservation to take free bus ticket in Obihiro Station bus terminal. Local bus departure from JR Obihiro Station and arrive Kangetsuen after 30 minutes bus ride. Front desk staff are nice and efficiency, check-in process completed within 5 minutes.

Traditional Japan style guest room with simple decoration. Full width window to expand the viewing angle and double glazed window provided good insulation to prevent cold air outside. River view let people relax and enjoyable.Room space is good enough and feel comfortable. Capsule coffee machine provided.Bathroom is tidy and clean, water closet is separate to prevent smell.

Package included dinner and breakfast. Many dishes dinner with fresh good quality foods. Indoor onsen is a normal big pool and outdoor onsen is very nice and enjoyable.

This is an enjoyable moment with helpful staffs, comfortable hotel and nice environment. I recommended.

Stayed here on 18-20 Feb 2015 (Chinese new year) at their suite,明月, on half board. Cost about SGD $600 plus for 2 per nights from Booking.com

Hotel is situated about half hour from Obihiro city centre. Obihiro is the capital city of Tokachi province, about 2.5hrs from sapporo and 1.5 hrs from Kushiro. If you are flying to Obihiro airport, which JAL and Air Do fly direct from Haneda airport which took 1hr 45mins. airport bus takes 40mins and cost ¥1000 each to obihiro JR station. On arrival at JR Obihiro station, proceed to the bus terminal outside of the train station. Approach desk staff for free local bus ticket to any of the Tokachigawa hot spring resort. Buses were small and may be packed. Passengers with big luggage have to hold on to their luggage on bus as there wasn't any place to store them on board. Bus leave from berth 6 at 0720, 0905, 1120 in the morning. While in the afternoon, buses leave at 1326, 1426, 1526, 1651 and last bus will be at 1811. The buses that leave at 1526 and 1811 will be boarded at berth 7 instead. If you forgot to obtain the free bus ticket, it will cost you ¥500 each.

If you happen to arrive earlier at Obihiro and have some time to spent while waiting for the bus, there are coin lockers at the train station, a huge 4 stories department stores with a huge supermarket besides the train station or one can walk 3 blocks down to Fujimaru department stores. We stocked up some food as we knew there's not much stores around the resort. Although there's a 24hrs convenient store on the main road outside the hotel and the hotel has a souvenir store that sell some dry food and sweets, but they only only at 2pm till 10pm.

Buses will stop right in front of the resort's entrance. Counter staff speaks minimal English but they are able to understand. Our suite 明月was situated at the top floor (level 5) facing the river and the bridge with no blockage. The suite was huge! Able to accommodate 4 adults. There where 2 twin beds and 2 futon beds. As there were only 2 of us, so the room was bigger as we did not utilize the futon beds in the living room area with tatami met. We were very amazed by the size and the fittings in the suite. There was a japanese sliding door which is able to divide the the room to a bed room and living area. Bath room has 2 separated sinks. Shower room comes with rain bath and anti slip flooring, such a delight for a warm shower. WC was separated from the bathroom which was great. Love the WC with auto sensor that will open up the WC cover and auto flush. There was a small sink in the WC with auto sensor too!

And ultimately, your own personal outdoor hot spring at the balcony overlooking the river and the bridge!!! Amazing! The hot spring tub is able to accommodate 2 adults in crossed legs position.

Basic toiletries available, plus some facial products and hair tonic lotion. A huge fridge with separated freezer, electronic kettle, a coffee machine that only supplied 2 capsules a day, a japanese sweet for each guest. Very nice and comfortable pajamas and fleece jacket for in-house use. A massage chair in the living room, air purifier plus humidifier, heated tower rack and a nano care for face at the bed side. Very well equipped indeed!

Breakfast was served as buffet style at level one with a variety of local and western dishes from 645-9am. Get a table beside the window with superb view and sun while enjoying your breakfast. Guests on half board will have their dinner serve at level 2. Counter staff will ask guests their preferred time for dinner as they will prepare them hot when you arrive. Our dinner for 2 nights were excellent!! Menu was different on both nights. I guess the most expensive dish were the steamed lobster tail with carrier on egg custard and the abalone. Entire dinner consists of 7-9 dishes with rice and soup. Very satisfying and filling!

Hotel staffs were excellent in service! They are such joyful group of people! Keep up the good job!

I guess the hotel is able to arrange some day time sightseeing trips. But we stayed in thru out of the hot spring. Guest with no personal hot spring are able to use their public outdoor hot spring at level 1. 10 mins walk to the right of the hotel is a park with some quiet activities such as flat land skiing during winter. However most of the park was closed due to the snow covered field. During winter, 10mins walk to the left of the hotel and cross the main street, there's a winter light show with some activities from 7-9pm. Entrance is free of charge and the light display was mesmerizing.

Upon check out, hotel will provide the free bus tickets to guest returning to obihiro JR station. Buses leave hotel at 0720, 0808, 0953, 1208, 1414, 1514, 1614, 1739 and 1859.

Certainly the best hotel I stayed in Hokkaido during my 5 days trip. What makes me recommend a hotel, especially in Hokkaido wintry months are as follow:

1) Great sleep quality (comfy futons + general quietness of hotel)
2) Great onsen (especially for that pre-dinner, post dinner and pre breakfast onsen session)
3) Great breakfast or dinner (wide range of dishes..and of course - delicious dishes)
4) Great room amenities (sleek washroom with automated toilet bowl seat warmer and bidet, towel dry rail, hairdryer, etc)
5) Great view from room (overlooks the Tokachi river)

Kangetsuen ticked them up in the right places. Any negatives of this hotel ? can't think of any, perhaps at my next stay at this hotel, I will look harder for them :)

Will I stay at this hotel on future trips in Hokkaido ? Of course, in a heart beat! Yes !

Room Tip: Ask for higher floor for better view of River Tokachi and the beautiful bridge (especially at night...

This was our first hotel for our winter Hokkaido trip 2013. Enjoyed the tatami room and especially love having two sinks in the bathroom which is separate from the toilet with its own tiny sink (so convenient and hygienic). The kaiseki style dinner was very good. Best part of this hotel is the outdoor onsen. It was a Japan hour dream come true. Imagine soaking in hot mineral filled water in the cold outdoor with snow crusted rocks and snow flurrying about. Such bliss.

The hotel is just by the river and the bridge. The dinner is great kaiseki style. Room is the traditional with the private onsen. Will sure be back. Right across the street there is a ramen stall and is very good too.

Was good to stop it when arriving from Sapporo airport and going to Lake Akan. The hotel is not luxury, but the rooms are nice (Japanese style, and not too bad for sleeping). The dinner we had was very good, with a lot of different dishes: crab + nice meat cooked at your table and very good fishes (sushi + cooked).
The place for the restaurant is quite different: totally IKEA style, which is a bit surprising at the first sight, a bit like a canteen. But after some time it is OK.

We spent 1 night in this hotel because we don't want to drive all the way from Lake Akan to Sapporo within the same day. There's nothing very special about this hotel other than its proximity to Sapporo. We had a breakfast & Kaiseki dinner package which we did not have too much of expectations after another Kaiseki dinner at Lake Akan. Unfortunately, it was a real disappointment. We were seated in a "restaurant" at the ground floor where it's nothing like a restaurant but a canteen! Food itself is another disappointment especially when compared with the one we had at Lake Akan the day before. Should it not be using seasonal specialty? We had hokkaido crab there but we hardly found any thing or ingredient special here. Ok, there is a small abalone. The onsen is not bad, but well, it's just so and so. I know I should not have any complaint if I'm paying less, but since I'm paying US$200 per day per person which equalled to what I paid 1 day before, I think I should expect a little more.
