A very different place from our usual stopovers - an imposing building overlooking the town, as you would expect quite grand in its design and decor. Large public rooms with huge paintings and tapestries surrounding a central courtyard with seating areas. In addition there is a well tended terraced garden which was very peaceful. The bedroom was quite spacious, comfortable and spotlessly clean. Breakfast is buffet style and good value - bread, ham, cheese, tortilla, pastries, fruit, yoghurt. We didn't have the evening meal, preferring to spend the evening on the square with the locals 2 minutes walk away. The newer part of town over the river is pretty nondescript. Not sure this would suit everyone as a hotel as it is so quiet, almost museum like, and some might prefer more atmosphere but we found it a lovely, cool, relaxing respite on a baking hot August day. The only reason I haven't given it excellent is that the receptionist was was quite dour and unwelcoming. I needed to speak to her several times - in Spanish - and I didn't get one smile or friendly word.
