Description: A roadside restaurant in the prehistoric pueblo of Illescas on the road from Madrid to Toledo, El Bohio doesnt shout Michelin star!, yet it has one. Behind its old wooden front door lies a magnificently cosy dining room boasting neo-Gothic stained glass, dark mirrors, a library, and sombre cast-iron fixtures. Jos Rodrguez is in charge of this gastronomic goldmine, a star chef celebrated for bold, modern yet down-to-earth cooking thats both pretty simple (his words) and surprising. Classic dishes are subverted and reassembled into culinary couture. On the world-classEl Bohio menu he invariably has a version of cocido, one of Spains oldest dishes. Its cellar has won El Bohio several top awards including best restaurant wine cellar in the world by a US wine magazine.

“Bring your own wine”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013 via mobile

Truly dissapointing to pay 160 euros out of 360 in drinks. We had the tasting menu, great, flawless, incredible! And they asked us for what to drink. Will you dare not to have good wine with such a great menu?
Ok, they begun with an average french champagne. 2 glasses. Followed by a quite good aged oak barrel white from Segovia, and 2 glasses of Oloroso (7.50 euros/each) and 2 and a half glasses of quite good Apricus Ribera del Duero red wine. Therefore the price we payed for the wine was almost double than what we payed for the over the top tasting menu. It was veeery dissapointing. Not to mention my wife is a sommelier so we knew what we were talking about. We will certainly not come back there for the -almost embarrasing- cost of the -almost under the average- drinks. Pepe, you did it great but there is something there that is not working....

“Perfecto”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2013

If you love fine dining and can get a booking then make the trip to Pepe's El Bohio near Toledo. We had the El Menu Degustacion plus wines and its been a long time since my tastebuds have danced.

This is a restaurant The Bulli type. A Pepe does a GREAT job!! WE went to Diverxo and in my opinion this is better than Diverxo.
Congratulations and best of luck.

“Don't the Michelin inspectors ever go to Spain?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2012

This wonderful restaurant is in Illescas, Province of Toledo, NOT in Madrid. We lunched yesterday on the Tasting Menú and as always it was sensational. There are very few chefs in EUROPE as imaginative and innovative as Pepe Rodriguez. The wine list is extraordinary in its breadth and quality; the service impeccable; Diego Rodriguez is a charming and knowledgeable host. El Bohio has had one star and the same write-up in the Michelin Guide for years. I have been to 3-star restaurants in France and Germany which pale in comparison. Except of course they are three times the price. Food lovers should make a bee-line to Illescas; ça vaut le voyage!
