We spent 7 pleasant nights at the Eurostars Mediterranea Plaza Alicante from 9-16 February 2013.
The hotel is ideally situated and is within only two minutes' walk from a large number of restaurants, Santa Barbara Castle (a "must see"), the train/tram to Benidorm/Altea/Denia and the beach/marina. The shopping area is about 10-15 minutes' walk away.
To get to the hotel we took bus C6 from the airport (2.75 € single, 20 minutes) and got off at Plaza Puerta del Mar, also two minutes' walk from the hotel, and right next to the train/tram terminus. Don't take a taxi - the bus is fast, efficient and inexpensive.
The hotel is very well appointed (no lounge area but there are so many cafés/restaurants in the vacinity that this is not a problem). Rooms are practical, the beds are very comfortable, and the breakfast - a buffet - is excellent (except the scambled eggs into which the chef seemed to have emptied the entire salt cellar on the day we tasted it!). Yoghurt, bread/toast with jam, cereals, ham, cheese, several fresh fruit juices, several fresh fruit, bacon, scrambled eggs, viennoiseries, coffee, tea).
There is a lift to the six floors, though it can only accommodate 3-4 adults.
There is free wifi in the rooms, though the signal strength was not enough to maintain a stable connection on the 4th floor. We understand they will be reviewing the wifi transmitters shortly.
The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. Reception staff speak English The rooms were very clean. Bathroom (with both bath and shower) was of a good size and over the 7 days we never experienced variations in the shower temperature (my pet hate in hotels!). Free tissues, shower gel, shoeshine, comb, etc. Ample supply of (large) towels replaced on request.
Lots of restaurants in the vacinity, all very good value and with very friendly staff.
We hired a car to explore the surrounding area for 3 days and the hotel staff enquired about rates for us (although in the event we rented directly via the internet as we got a better price that way with Europcar at the railway station). It is of note that the hotel has a discount at the car park just by the Melia Plaza Hotel (2' walk) which charges only 15€ instead of the regular 24€ for 24 hours for Eurostars guests.
The double glazing is not very well fitted (the glass panes were not air-tight which rather defeats the object of the exercise) - there were lots of roudy youths whose favourite passtime was to yell and sing at 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 am and unfortunately the double glazing was not effective against their antisocial behaviour, though we suspect that no double or indeed triple glazing would be in view of their rowdy antics! Some of them had excellent voices that carried over miles. They should form a chorale ;-)
All in all, great value for money and we would definitely recommend this hotel, and indeed go back for another stay in the future.
Thanks to all the staff for making our stay so pleasant.
Hint: Best tarifs can often be obtained by reserving during the night (Alicante time).
