Alicante is not my favorite city in Spain (not even close), and the waterfront reminds me of Miami, all highway and big hotels. But if you are going, you might as well stay here. The hotel is in a great location with plenty of beach (though not the prettiest beach by a long shot) and an easy walk to marina restaurants and shopping. We had the perfect paella at one of the marina restaurants (I'll try to recall which one for another review). We were only here for two nights, and the accommodations were very comfortable for a high-rise beachfront resort. We had a lovely waterfront balcony and a very comfortable suite. The Melia chain really has it together.

Perfect location. The beach on one side, yachtharbour on the other side and the old town on the third side. Could not be better. Nice poolarea with splendid view over the sea and beach. Great breakfast buffee with everything you can ask for. All staff friendly and helpful. You can choose between a room with balcony toward the beach (morning sun) or towards the the harbour (evening sun). Comfortable generous beds. Bus to airport near the hotel.

Everything has gone WAY downhill at this place. We have stayed here several times in past years, but no more.

ROOMS: We had 3 different rooms during our stay...almost needed to move to a fourth! First room had a limited view, although at check-in they assured me we would be able to see the castle and the beach from the room as requested, so we changed rooms. Second room, the phone wouldn't work, and despite their trying to fix it, they couldn't. The next day, in the third room, the TV wouldn't work, but they finally fixed it after two attempts. Although the 3rd room was tiny compared to the others, we decided to stay put and not press our luck. All 3 rooms were in serious need of renovation, with peeling paint, old, chipped furniture, missing and dirty caulking in the bathroom, etc. The beds are hard as rocks.

SERVICE: The people at the desk downstairs seldom answer the phone when called from your room which caused me to have my daughter (in another room at the hotel) give us a wake-up call the next morning since I couldn't reach reception to do it. We also tried to get tickets to a bullfight one day, but no one at reception knew who to call. We were told that the concierge was off that day and wouldn't be in till the next day.

FOOD AND WAITERS: The food and service at the CODEBAR is horrendous! We ordered a club sandwich which finally came after a half hour and consisted of soggy bread (which was supposed to be toast), one limp to the point of transparency partial leaf of lettuce, a nearly raw piece of bacon (which, according to the English menu translation it was not supposed to have, and which I couldn't eat), a little chicken and a slice of tomato. It was supposed to come with French fries (according to the English translation), but instead came with potato chips. Waiter said it was a "mistake" and left it at that. When I asked for another sandwich, he never brought one...just left it on the table till we left. When served a drink, we had to ask them to add the normal trims...orange slice, lemon, even ice.

By the way, it costs 20 Euros ($25 ) a day to park!

Several other problems as well, We actually left a complaint form at reception when we left. This is a very big deal in Spain and is a first for us. A copy of this complaint has been sent to the appropriate administration in Alicante although there is not nearly enough room on the form to enumerate all we went through. No adjustments of any kind were made to our bill despite all the problems, and we were told that if we waited a few more hours, we could speak to the person who deals with customer service! Needless to say, we didn't stick around.

A few days later, I received an e-mail from said person. She made excuses for the problems and offered us AN UPGRADE ON OUR NEXT STAY WITH THEM!! That's it!! Good luck with that "next stay".

I visited the Melia Alicante in May for 3 days. The apartments were lovely and clean and the view was pleasant too, looking over the marina. The breakfast was spectacular, anything you could think of from champagne to beans on toast!

The only downside was the pool, it's very small and isn't always sunlit, which means it can get very cold especially in May! However this was just a small downside as the beach is right on the doorstep!

I would happily stay here again.

Room Tip: I would choose a higher floor as on the marina side the bins are in full view. I expect it could ge...

We loved Alicante! Our stay at Melia Alicante made our visit a memorable vacation! The location of Melia Alicante is superb and its service was impeccable. The beautiful beach is right next to it. My husband and I spent a whole day enjoying the beach doing nothing but people watching and playing with water. A short walk to many tapa places, restaurants, small supermarkets, where the streets are clean and pleasant to walk in.

We were given a room facing the ocean and looking down on the beach and mountains. Can't complain about the view at all! The room is spacious, clean, and the bed is comfortable. We stayed only one night but wish we had stayed more.

Room Tip: Ask for a high-floor room with the ocean view.

Stayed for just one night as part of our two week tour around Spain. Booked a ‘Suite, The Level’.

These are rooms on the top floor of the hotel. There is a separate ‘The Level’ reception on the 5th floor.

I don’t believe our room was actually a suite, not even a junior suite. It was very nice, but was just one room. Including a glass dining table with four chairs (that got in the way) and a desk doesn’t make it a suite! Not a big deal though as we were only there for one night and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was large with a separate shower (big walk-in one) and bath. There was a good selection of toiletries.

Wardrobe was actually a walk-in closet which was good, especially if you were staying for more than a few days, although maybe a waste of space…?

Wraparound balcony was nice and offered good views of the marina and Alicante itself – cheap chairs and loungers though – not in keeping with the ‘level’ I think they are trying to achieve with the rest of this part of the hotel.

Mini-bar was complimentary, ‘only’ stocked with soft drinks and a couple of beers, no spirits – still nice to be able to grab a drink from a mini-bar without needing to take out a second mortgage!

A small lounge area in the lobby on the 5th floor offered a selection of complimentary drinks and snacks – this was very good. You could have a small breakfast selection here as well, or head down to the main breakfast room. Breakfast in the main room was a shock after the peace and quiet of 'the level', but the selection was very good.

I’d consider staying at the Melia Alicante again, only at ‘the Level’ though.

The summer of 2012 in the UK will be remembered as the wettest drought on record. Woke up one morning to yet another grey and gloomy day. Needed to see some sun so booked this hotel after some research, not least TA. Arrived 24 hours after the decision to go and was not disappointed. Stayed in one of their "V" (club-type) rooms. These are all on the top/5th floor and have their own check-in and bar/lounge. Room was very comfortable and stylish with a great view out to sea. Bathroom and facilities excellent. Staff and general welcome professional and pleasant. Light breakfast served in the club lounge with full choice in the general restaurant (excellent).

This was a short "city-type" break for us and Alicante didn't disappoint - well worth a visit; very Spanish. Do not be put off by the nearby "kiss-me-quick" resorts. Tapas/pinxos certainly comparable by way of choice and quality with Seville, San Sebastian etc.

The Melia hotel is on the waterfront by the Marina and is only a 2 minute stroll from the bustling centre yet quiet (our room was especially peaceful as requested when booking).

If I had to find fault (and this was difficult) it would be the pool area and loungers. Because of the hotel's location and design, the area surrounding the pool was relatively small (albeit the pool more than adequate for swimming) and threfore the number of loungers limited. The ubiquitous early morning towel brigade were up to their normal tricks and anyone arriving poolside after breakfast were pushed to find a vacant lounger.

Can't comment on the standard rooms but our experience made this hotel a great place for a leisurely break and seeing the pleasant city of Alicante.

Room Tip: If you can, book a "V" room away from the private lounge area
