The day we arrived in Alicante we got a tip to check out Monastrell. Since it was a sunday the restaurant wasn't open. You could only eat tapas. So we did this for lunch and were positively surprised. Really nice and fine food. We liked it so much that we immediately booked for the tuesday.
Monastrell is a stylish chic restaurant located in the Amerigo Hotel. The staff is loose yet very organised and capable.
We started out with cocktails. A beer cocktail with lemon and salt. Who would've thought of that.
They had a nice menu card from which we chose menú María José San Román.
We strated with a oil tasting. Very special. Then Pea guacamole with lobster, roasted foie gras with saffron-tomato confit, black rice with razor clams, prawns and squid, ranch hen with asparagus emulsion, sage and inflated lentils and finally Alaska soufflé with saffron and orange marmalade ice cream. Great food accompanied by great wines. Delicate classical flavors turned into modern dishes.
The only let down was ranch hen and the Baked Alaska. The portions were pretty big (especially the Baked Alaska) and missed the delicate balance that all the others courses had.
A really good food experience. I ate wore in Michelin starred restaurant. Wouldn't be surprised if Monastrell also gets one any time soon. It would be well deserved.
