First of all the Abama is expensive, so will not be for everyone - that's got the negative part out of the way.
Unfortunately my wife has terminal cancer, and when we were told our first trip to the Abama was booked as a treat for just myself and my wife to take in the news, having had it recommended by some of our well off friends. Our first impressions as we drove up in the taxi was that the Abama is massive!! The terracota buildings can be seen from a distance. When we arrived we were met by very friendly and helpful staff who welcomed us, whisked our bags away and sat us down for a cold drink.
As I mentioned, the Abama covers a large area so you are taken everywhere by golf buggies, or you can hire your own.
Our first stay was in the main hotel with views of the golf course and sea. The rooms are large, with a very big, very comfortable bed, and the main hotel rooms have a large balcony with two loungers, and there is still plenty of space to walk around. There are several restaurants, including the M.B (££££) and Kabuki (£££), as well as the Mirador (££) which serves mainly sea food. On our first visit there was also a buffet style restaurant but this has now gone and has been replaced by an Italian (£) and Argentinian (£) restaurants. The food is good everywhere although relatively expensive, so an alternative would be to get a cab or hire a car to local restaurants. Unless you plan to explore the island hiring a car may be pointless as you don't need to go outside of the hotel. We do, but that is mainly so we cab reduce the cost.
The Abama has around 5 swimming pools, two main ones in the hotel, an adult only infinity pool at the Mirador restaurant and private pools for use by residents of the villa accommodation. As you arrive at the pool an attendant will normally rush up, set up towels and bring you a bottle of water.
The staff are all extremely friendly and helpful, and on the rare occasion when you have to complain it is dealt with in a prompt manner and you get an apology.
Since our first visit we have been back 3 times, and have been upgraded to a villa each time, and due to my wife's health have kindly been given a golf buggy for free. When we arrive Adrian at the front greets us by name and sorts out the buggy, while the reception team check us in. We have taken our 3 children on the last 3 visits and they absolutely love the place. The views when you drive your buggy to the golf shop are stunning, and whilst I haven't had the opportunity to play a round of golf the course looks stunning.
The villas are lovely. We prefer the ground floor ones as these open onto a small garden, but the second floor ones have better views. The private pools are large, probably around 40-50 metres long, although not very wide, but are a fabulous place to relax.
All in all the Abama has become our bolt hole when things have become difficult, and we hope to return again.
All are good. You face either the golf course or the sea, but sea views are stunning.
