“Good food, Good price but...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2013

(I will start with the unpleasant side but there are good traits of the hotel as well)

The first negative aspect is that it's very far from the airport if you don't rent a car/bus service. With a regular bus you have to change twice and the journey takes aprox. 2 hours.

! The bed is terrible to sleep on. Like sleeping on wood. Plus, they don't have a king type of bed but rather two single ones which are one near the other. So if you come as a couple it can be a small issue.

The air conditioning in our room was not working properly and it can get hot during the night.

One of the receptionists, S. with blonde highlights has a somehow unfriendly 'rolling her eyes' type of attitude (although I noticed she is fluent in many languages so who knows, maybe it's not a proper job for her. A bit unfriendly anyway...)

The furniture is a bit 'tired' but I have noticed that in other hotels in Spain as well so many it's just their style...

! We went in September (beginning) and the weather was excellent. 28 - 30(°C).

The food is very good and there is a variety so that you don't get bored of it. + snacks and open bar (if all inclusive). The desserts are wonderful.

The accommodation is spacious if you care about that (studio type with kitchen)

They also have 3 (or so) swimming pools which are quite nice.

The beach is near (10min of walking) and it is beautiful with nice darker sand. The view is spectacular everywhere.

I would say the resort is more family and couple appropriate rather than for singles and group friends. There is not exactly a night life out there.

Overall is an OK hotel that doesn't cost much and it's near a beautiful beach.

Room Tip: There is one pool which has a nice 'kids castle' near it and so it might be best for familie...

Stayed here in nov 2012. Our room was ok but could do with an update to bring up the standards. The food was very nice and the buffet was regularly changed throughout the evening meal to keep everything fresh. The surrounding area was very nice and there is a bus stop right outside for anyone wishing to venture out and about.

The staff were always pleasant and looked after you if you had any questions or issues.

The pool here was ok but it was FREEZING cold! Not very comfortable for swimming in.

Room Tip: Higher floor has less noise

We stayed at the Barcelo Varadero in early August, with three young kids and a grandparent and found the place ok. I agree with reviewers who mention that the rooms are a bit 'tired', but we spent the majority of our time by the pool so it was no real issue. We were in E-block which was ideal as it was very close to the kids pool area and the bigger swimming pool was quieter (no problem getting a sunbed). We always had hot water and towels and linen were replaced whenever we requested it, so no complaints there. I also have to compliment the staff who were responsible for the upkeep of the pools and grounds as these areas were always immaculate

The evening entertainment is hampered by the room that they use, which is just not big enough! There are very few tables outside and the inside area is packed. It is very difficult to get drinks with the volume of people, especially as spirits and mixers were on completely different sides of the room. It just needed to be a bit better organised, but we rarely saw anybody that could be identified as management of the hotel after about 6pm. There should be somebody around who could stop people blocking walkways, dumping pushchairs just inside a door etc but the bar staff were too busy to do this. The entertainment itself was a bit cheesy and seemed to be designed as pre-cursor to getting people to spend money on photos with snakes, parrots, owls, dancers etc, although the daytime activities such as shooting, archery and football were a good laugh.

The food was repetitve and by the end of the holiday I was completely fed up with it! There was typically one 'special' dish per evening, but this attracted a very long queue as, I guess, most people were as bored with the food as me! The rest of the food was always chips, potatoes, meat (rabbit, duck) and fish, so like other reviewers I ate a lot of salad and soup!

I wouldn't book this place again, but if you just want a week led by a pool, don't want a siesta in your room and make your entertainment in the evening then it isn't too bad.

Room Tip: E-block rooms are at the far end of the complex, away from the entertainment and near the kids pool...

Just returned from 2 weeks holiday in Tenerife. We stayed at a Barcelo Hotel in Lanzarote last year and so expected it to be the same standard, but were disappointed that it didn't. We stayed in Block D on the second floor and found that the room was nice - clean and spacious. Unlike some of the reviewers we did not have any problem changing our towels - they were changed every time we left them in the bath. The cleaner was pleasant and we found that most of the hotel staff smiled and spoke to us when we met them. The room had a nice view overlooking the pool. The only problem with the room was the cockerel nearby which would wake us at about 4am and continue to 'cock a doodle do' incessantly for the next few hours.

There was a good choice of pools, but the day's entertainment all took place around the middle pool, which was where the self service bar was also situated. There was the usual problem with sunbeds being reserved with towels, so we had trouble finding sunbeds on several occasions. I had a discussion about this with the lifeguard, and he said that he didn't start work until 10am, but had been told that beds were reserved in the early hours of the morning. Returning to our room that night (at about 11:45 pm ) we noticed that there were only 2 sunbeds around the main pool that hadn't been reserved. I feel that the hotel management should do something about this as most towels did not move at all in 2 weeks, and we used to joke that some had probably remained unmoved for months as the owners had gone home and left them behind. We never actually ate at the pool bar as the hot dogs and burgers etc did not look very appealing.

The restaurant food was quite limited - ok if you like goat, rabbit and duck complete with all the bones. I struggled on a few occasions to find something to eat, and I will try most things. My daughter survived on cheese and chips for 2 weeks. Breakfast was about the best meal of the day, but several times I had a long wait for the bacon to be replenished. We found the restaurant staff ok - most smiled and said hello to us. The exception was the restaurant manager whom we did not see smile once in 2 weeks, I don't think he knows how to, and he appears to have the weight of the world on his shoulders.

The entertainment room was very badly designed, with the soft drink and beer bar at one side of the room, and the spirit, wine and cocktail bar at the other side. That meant that people were constantly crossing from one side to the other, so if your view was not blocked by the constant stream of people, it was blocked by one of the many pillars in the room. We found lots of fellow guests very rude, and they would just stand right in front of where we were sitting. I was constantly having to ask people to move, and when I very politely asked one couple to move the man became quite aggressive and said that we should move our table - which would have meant blocking all access to the spirit bar.

As for the actual entertainment it was badly organised. The childrens disco started at about 8pm and finished around 8:30. There would then be a lull before anything else happened, and no announcement as to what would then be happening. Twice during our stay there was a snake show, once a parrot show, and once eagles. The main aim of these appeared to be to take photographs of children holding them, and charge 10 euros each. On a couple of occasions a game of bingo was played, but although between us we know the numbers in French, Spanish and German as well as English we struggled to understand anything Ruben the entertainment manager was saying as he spoke so fast and all languages merged into one.

The main show of the evening did not start until 10pm. Some of the shows were ok, or at least I think they would have been ok if we could actually see anything. Simone, the Italian rep was lovely and tried really hard to entertain everybody, as were Lydia and Pauline. I didn't feel that the others made much effort except with people of their own nationality, and they seemed more interested in posing in their extremely high heels than making an effort to entertain.

In my opinion the evening entertainment needs to be better organised, with proper annoucements as to what is going to happen, and should for the busy summer period at least be moved to a better location. The main pool has a much better stage, with the pool bar available, and no pillars blocking views. It woud mean stacking away the sunbeds each night, but would also solve the problem of reserving them with towels.

On the whole we enjoyed our holiday. Highlights were a trip up Mount Teide (take warm clothes its freezing even in the middle of summer), a round island trip and the beautiful black sand of Playa de la Arena. The hotel could be so much better if the food choice was extended, and the entertainment improved and moved, as the rooms and pool are nice and location great

Room Tip: The rooms in Block D were fine

arrived to find our room was not ready! no real problem, waited and waited to eventually find our room was dirty, smelly and stained!! we specified 2 things for our holiday...decent air con and a good kids club, the air con consisted of a unit nailed to the wall that leaked and never worked!!..the kids club consisted of a bloke sitting in a shelter, selling you some cheap colouring books for 5 euros! the food was awful, big queues for everything! I would like to say that the staff barely concealed their contempt for everyone, but the truth is they did not even try to hide their contempt! their own hotel literature claimed the beach was 700 mtrs away! the reception staffed advised us to get bus to the beach! I genuinely do not have delusions of grandeur but I really want a clean, pleasant hotel to take my family to!! THIS WAS NOT IT! the over loaded pool was full of louts and idiots who not only left their towels on their sunloungers early but decided to leave them for the duration of their holiday, a policy that seemed supported by the hotel that could not give a monkeys about your comfort!!! DO NOT GO HERE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! we left after 20 hours and instead had a lovely holiday at the Golf Plaza Hotel in Golf de sur!!!

Room Tip: get a good room by getting another hotel!

Just returned after 2 weeks. Not the best of starts after finding the padlock on our suitcase had been broken off and property stolen out of it by the baggage handlers at the airport.(nothing to do with the hotel but be aware as no one was interested when we reported it!).
After arriving late at the hotel we were left to struggle with our baggage and 2 young sleeping kids while the hotel receptionist walked empty handed in front of us as he showed us halfway to our room. When we got to our room which was basic with need of refurbishment, but clean, there was no travel cot as we had asked for. when we contacted reception about it we were told they couldn't get one until the next day so had to have our youngest in our bed.
Food was ok but repetitive. Most of the dining room staff were ignorant and were regularly seen dropping cutlery on the floor and then putting it back on tables.
Pools were ok but be aware of the miserable git who works at the pool bar.
Entertainment was rubbish and was more aimed at the majority of french customers.
Location is poor with a 10 minute walk to the beech down a steep hill where there are also a few shops and restaurants (chinese worth a visit).
On the plus side we never had to queue for a drink as everything was self service.
Hotel towels were clean and didn't have poo stains on them like we have encountered before.(trying to find something else positive to say about the place).
If you haven't already booked don't bother!

Room Tip: Another hotel
