“This hotel is great, except for the foul plumbing smell”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2013

Having experienced one of the worst hotels in my life in nearby Portugalete, I was very pleased to discover this very nice, excellently priced 4-star hotel -- about 45Euro/night for a room with two standard length twin beds. We stayed here 6 nights in April 2013

Firstly, any reader should note that 4-star in Spain doesn't mean the same thing as in Canada or the US (or much of the rest of Europe for that matter). It's more like a nice 2 star American hotel with better furniture and marble bathrooms.

That said, the room was clean, spacious (enough) and comfortable. The wood floors were nice and the window opened up to a view of the river -- note that this is a post-industrial town on a polluted river, so there's no such thing as a great view. It's high enough up the hill from the river that the breeze is clean and doesn't smell of the river's pollution. The hotel overlooks a train station immediately below which can be a bit noisy.

The weekday staff was very helpful, but the weekend staff was terrible (we reported names to the NH hotel group when they asked for feedback so I won't do that here).

The breakfast buffet was great during the week with terrific food and great service -- terrible on weekends (different staff on Saturdays apparently) and they ran out of food. 8 Euro per person per day for breakfast

We didn't try the restaurant because they mainly served local cuisine which is dominated by fish and pork (which we don't eat)

The bathroom in our room (Floor 3, Room 302) was super clean, but *very* poorly vented so it would still be foggy several hours after a hot shower -- as a consequence, there was some black mold in the bathroom tiles. Common plumbing practices in this part of Spain are substandard compared to the rest of continental Europe or North America; so not surprisingly running the shower or sink would cause the bidet or toilet to "gurgle" and as a result the bathroom reeked. I cannot describe how foul the odor was. Numerous complaints to the hotel management were ignored (we quickly discovered that their English skills mysteriously degraded when a customer was complaining).

Fortunately, the bathroom was separated from the bedroom by two doors which we were able to close and block off with towels on the floor, so the odor mostly stayed out of the room as long as we didn't run the air-conditioner.

The odor was clearly a problem in many other rooms as it permeated the hallway too.

Compared to the other so-called "4-star" hotel down the road (the "gran hotel puente colgante") this place is a gem, and 20 euro per night cheaper. I would stay here again if I had to return to Santurtzi but I would request a room on the other end of the hotel in the hopes of avoiding the terrible odor

Room Tip: Choose higher number rooms on each floor, as the rooms down by 302 all had a terrible plumbing odor

Having used booking .com to pre book hotel i found this hotel very good and close to port for ferry in morning.Very easy to find even for sat nav as well.Room clean, canal plus tv free wifi.A welcome rest point after travelling all day from alicante.Downsides well if your put a back of hotel you will find a railway station and main line container traffic into dock.last train about 11pm.breakfast 15 e,parking 15 e,and evening meals bit pricey eg cheese omelette 10e.
If you venture up the road to shops plenty of small bars/tapas but you will do well to find many eateries in the town, walk down to the iron bridge area and u will b fine.

Room Tip: try to avoid room at back

The return ferry to Portsmouth was much delayed and we had to find at the last moment an unscheduled overnight stay. It was our good fortune to find this NH Hotel which offered delightful room. The reception stall were very helpful and breakfast the following morning was superb with not only a wide choice from the buffet table but also a most attentive waiter who served an English breakfast of bacon and eggs!
Whilst there was a railway line behind and below our room, this did not cause a noise problem.
Should we require a room in the Bilbao area again, this will be our choice.
A word of warning, if you require the return ferry from the hotel and you are using your sat.nav.
The ferry terminal has moved a considerable distance from that of late and can put another 10 minutes extra on the journey.

Room Tip: Higher floors are more above any noise from the railway.

This was just an overnight stay en-route to the south of Spain for a winter holiday and just chosen at random as it looked like an OK place from various reviews.

Our arrival was delayed by 24 hours due to storms, but even though we had a non-cancelable booking, changing our booking by 24 hours was no problem. The room was a little small, but comfortable. The parking is a tight squeeze, but this is typical for Spain as we have discovered.

On arrival, we were offered an upgrade to a superior room with tea & coffee making facilities and a sea view. This offered a discount on the parking, so seemed worthwhile. The seaview is nothing special and overlooks the railway - but can't be heard.

The restaurant was very quiet and thus a bit devoid of character, but extremely good value for money and friendly service. Similarly, breakfast was a huge selection and although expensive, was convenient and worth the money.

All in all, a good choice. With easy access to the train, it is probably good for a stay in Bilbao and somewhere that we would use again without hesitation.

Room Tip: The seaview doesn't offer a great deal.

Our ferry was cancelled due to gale force winds and we had to find somewhere at the last minute and this hotel did the job. Our room might have overlooked the railway line and the food was well interesting but the location and overall standard was satisfactory. Free wi fi in the room was much appreciated. The secure parking gave peace of mind with all our stuff in the boot but there was a charge for this which off set the late deal on offer.

Room Tip: It's a fine balance. The options might be sea view with railway line or town view with no railwa...

We stayed for one night before catching the ferry from Bilbao back to the UK the next morning. Reception staff were very helpful and have us directions to the ferry terminal. Our room overlooked the train line but it didn't really bother us. The room was a good size and wifi worked well. We parked in the underground car park which was fine and easy to access. We didn't eat in the hotel so can't comment on that. We walked down into Santurtzi and had a really goodmeal and nice afternoon so we enjoyed our stay. If we were travelling by ferry again we'd definitely go back to this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not facing train line.

We stayed in room 301, it overlooked the railway line, but it didn't disturb us. The room was clean and comfortable, but had no tea making facility. The bathroom was large, and had a separate wash basin area with free toiletries. We did not take the breakfast. The staff were friendly and helpful and spoke English.
NOTE ABOUT PARKING. When we arrived we were told that the hotel had no parking facility available, but that we could park in the hospital car park opposite the hotel. When you do this you need to take a ticket to use in the machine to pay so that you can leave the car park. The barrier was up when we parked, but down when we tried to leave the next morning. We had to go to the hospital reception desk and buy a ticket, which cost us 13euros, so that we could leave.
