Having experienced one of the worst hotels in my life in nearby Portugalete, I was very pleased to discover this very nice, excellently priced 4-star hotel -- about 45Euro/night for a room with two standard length twin beds. We stayed here 6 nights in April 2013
Firstly, any reader should note that 4-star in Spain doesn't mean the same thing as in Canada or the US (or much of the rest of Europe for that matter). It's more like a nice 2 star American hotel with better furniture and marble bathrooms.
That said, the room was clean, spacious (enough) and comfortable. The wood floors were nice and the window opened up to a view of the river -- note that this is a post-industrial town on a polluted river, so there's no such thing as a great view. It's high enough up the hill from the river that the breeze is clean and doesn't smell of the river's pollution. The hotel overlooks a train station immediately below which can be a bit noisy.
The weekday staff was very helpful, but the weekend staff was terrible (we reported names to the NH hotel group when they asked for feedback so I won't do that here).
The breakfast buffet was great during the week with terrific food and great service -- terrible on weekends (different staff on Saturdays apparently) and they ran out of food. 8 Euro per person per day for breakfast
We didn't try the restaurant because they mainly served local cuisine which is dominated by fish and pork (which we don't eat)
The bathroom in our room (Floor 3, Room 302) was super clean, but *very* poorly vented so it would still be foggy several hours after a hot shower -- as a consequence, there was some black mold in the bathroom tiles. Common plumbing practices in this part of Spain are substandard compared to the rest of continental Europe or North America; so not surprisingly running the shower or sink would cause the bidet or toilet to "gurgle" and as a result the bathroom reeked. I cannot describe how foul the odor was. Numerous complaints to the hotel management were ignored (we quickly discovered that their English skills mysteriously degraded when a customer was complaining).
Fortunately, the bathroom was separated from the bedroom by two doors which we were able to close and block off with towels on the floor, so the odor mostly stayed out of the room as long as we didn't run the air-conditioner.
The odor was clearly a problem in many other rooms as it permeated the hallway too.
Compared to the other so-called "4-star" hotel down the road (the "gran hotel puente colgante") this place is a gem, and 20 euro per night cheaper. I would stay here again if I had to return to Santurtzi but I would request a room on the other end of the hotel in the hopes of avoiding the terrible odor
