A roadside restaurant you would easily pass by, but the number of local people visiting the restaurant made us visit there on 2009. On our last visit on July 2010 we had to visit the restaurant twice again and where thrilled with the food and service.
Interior is cosy catalan countrystyle, two separate dining areas both capable of serving around 50 persons each. Outdoors there are several more tables on beautiful shaded garden.
On lunchtime (both 2010 visits) the restaurant operates as a buffet style restaurant with chefs continuously bringing new fresh dishes. The lunch service was around 15EUR containing beer or wine, 20+ different starters to sample, ~10 main dishes and huge variety of desserts. We ate the best food during this week on El Jou Vell, and I think I have never had better chocolate mousse or crema catalan than there.
On dinner service (2009 visit), the restaurant was not buffet style, but with a menu covering mostly catalan style dishes. A menu of house wine, starters, main course and dessert was around 30-35EUR - again the best dinner both in terms of quality and price-quality ratio during this 2-week trip. My wife had the seafood plate as the main course and just for the record it had 3 different kinds of shellfish, squids, 3 different species of fish and 2 different kinds of crabs/prawns. All of them were excellent and there was actually plenty to share for all others to taste as well.
Find out the lunch serving times beforehand, as it got full pretty soon. If I recall correctly the serving times started 12:00 and 16:00.
The staff tries to communicate also in english, but seems fluent in three other languages (catalan, spanish, french). Don't let that bother - as they are very friendly and helpful.
