We were much seduced by the article written in the New York Times and consequently published in the Australian Financial Review Magazine ( 2005) on the Castello di Vicarello. Having been to Italy and Tuscany many times, we thought a genuine Tuscan experience in a " home" kind of setting might be fun. The experience we had, was nothing like what the author of the article wrote.
We stayed there for 2 nights and on reflection, the value for money was not great. The previous three nights we spent at L'Andana, a short distance away. At L'Andana, we had a fantastic room overlooking the pool, huge bathroom and delicious cold and hot buffet breakfast included and the rate was cheaper. Also, at L'Andana, they do the simple Tuscan cooking which was tasty and interesting. In contrast, at Castello di Vicarello, we had a nice enough room but we were rather surprised that the sheets were not changed and I'm not sure that the towels were changed either as they were slightly damp. At all other hotels we have stayed in, this has never happened! Basic things such as tissue paper and shower caps were also missing. Breakfast was really sparse, there were fruit and cake and everything else were charged extra for eaxample, orange juice at 5 euros. I wished we had asked what was included and also the pricing of the food at dinner and lunch. There was no menu, first day on checking in we were told that dinner will be steak, 2nd night we were told what is available just before diner itself - I guess the communication is missing here! Lunch of a bowl of broccoli pasta was 20 euros each. Dinner on the first night was steak which was badly cooked, it was served "brontosaurus" fashion, still on the bone, the piece was too thick fand uneven for it to be seared on the hot plate ,so it was still very raw inside, we don't mind medium rare but this was still cold inside. A repeat go at hot plate did not yield any better, we gave up. Accompanying the steak was lettuce leaves. Entree was ravioli which were dry. A disappointing meal at 70 euros each. Second night's dinner was slightly better but not that great for a similar price. Wine is on top, which is normal.
The view from the castle was truly beautiful and the renovation of the castle where the main house is, must have been a job and a half. However, for a hotel that brands itself as a luxurious accomodation, it is rather disappointing. We are frequent travellers to France and Italy, staying at the upper end of the price range so we have an expectation of a certain standard in rooms, food and srevice. Unfortunately, this was missing at Castello di Vicarello.
