“Excellent country retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

This place is in the middle of the hills and hard to find, but we didn't have any big problems (though driving during daytime is highly recommended). We loved the place and used it as a two night stop to begin a drive through wine country. It was one of our favourites. Animals roam the property and some get eaten for dinner! The restaurant was great and the food was obviously very fresh. We will travel back here whenever we return to Tuscany.

We just ended two weeks vacation on a roundtrip in Tuscany. Pisa was bad, Siena was fantastic, the beach was too crowdy, San Gimignano was excellent, Lucca was great, Volterra too...but the place that we definitely will return to, is Tenuta La Bandida. We read a lot of different reviews before we decided to go there, just for one night. We ended up being there the last four nights, and then we had to return to Norway.
First of all: The food was excellent (don't let any of the other reviewers tell you different), the swimmingpool was refreshing (even tho we needed to clean it for bugs once every day), the rooms were just as majestic as you read about in the fairytales and the colourful owner made the stay a perfect ending on a perfect vacation. The last night we woke up in the middle of the night, and we were sure it was a drunk man playing saxophone in the garden. Fortunately it was just a singing donkey..

First of all, I have to say that our stay at La Bandita a few months ago was not too bad. The hotel itself is beautiful and the staff is very kind and welcoming.

Unfortunately though we had a negative fist impression: when we first got there, the owner was smoking in the office and she looked very insecure of herself and almost embarrassed.

As I mentioned, the staff is kind and efficient, but it is immediately clear that they do not have enough people working there, so you see the poor waitresses running around trying to do everything…one really feels sorry for them and wishes they were not so few.

Another thing that I didn’t like at all is that the owner treats her staff very badly. She picked up on a waitress in a really rude and aggressive way, something I find unjustifiable in any case, but especially in front of the clients, as it was in our case!

I also noticed that they have video cameras in some rooms, e.g. in the kitchen and in the offices. I really wonder if that’s legal in Italy. If – as I think – it isn’t legal then I think this should be brought to the attention of the appropriate authorities.

Finally, I’ve always thought of Italy as THE country for good cooking and wonderful eating…well, for sure you don’t get that at La Bandita. You can see there isn’t any care at all and that the implicit idea behind this attitude is that “anything’s good for these tourists”…very disappointing indeed.

If you can find this place, you will recognize that it is well worth the effort. However, finding it is quite a challenge as both the car navigation system and cell phone GPS took us on an adventure. Plan to arrive during daylight hours! La Bandita is run by a very warm and charming staff who pay attention to every detail of your stay. The place is extremely clean, charming, with fresh flowers in every room. It reminded us of an upscale farmhouse with the occasional sound of donkeys outside. After a long day in the car, we had probably the best dinner so far in Italy here. I think we would come back just for the dinner. Plan for at least 2 days here if possible since it is such an amazing place and far off the beaten path.

It is hard to put into words the emotional appeal of this magnificent villa. The superb location, the extraordinary facility (beautiful rooms), the remarkable food and management and staff that are wholly dedicated to a relaxing, enjoyable experience. I see that "lyndaMtl" didn't have a great experience but, having stayed here twice, I think that was a very rare exception. Daniella, the owner, is gracious and lovely and sets the tone for a remarkable stay. Everything is remarkably balanced: Low key yet sublimely elegant. Attentive without being overbearing. Rooms are spacious, very tastefully appointed with generous amenities. The silence during the day -- and night -- is blissfully deafening. The chirping birds and occasional hee-haw from the donkey or neighing from the horses or the honking of the geese is all there is to "disturb" the gentle wind rustling the trees. Most of what you'll eat there is literally home-grown, including the wine and olive oil. You will, like us, leave this experience very sadly. The thoughts of returning some day will provide the needed solace until that becomes a reality. Without a doubt, we recommend Bandita for the discriminating traveler who appreciates the best Tuscany has to offer. We count the days until we can return! GRAZIE MILLE, DANIELLA. BRAVA! CIAO!

Room Tip: Our favorite is Room 14; includes a balcony/porch. Many from which to choose.

My husband and I spent two nights at La Bandita. The grounds, view and villa are just breathtaking. We had a room in the main villa and it was very comfortable and grand. The cool breezes in the mountain made it perfect for sitting on the terrace to eat, relax or simply read a book.

We drove into Castagneta Carducci for one afternoon and enjoyed walking the village and having lunch there. The rest of our meals were at La Bandita and the food was very good. Breakfasts were plentiful and full of variety. Dinners were well prepared and although a bit slow, good service. We did have one funny event, when we were waiting a while for our main course, the waiter came by to see if we wanted to order dessert. Oops, I guess they forgot about us. He remedied it quickly and we had steaming hot food in front of us in no time.

We did walk the grounds, but didn't really spend any time at the pool. We enjoyed our relaxing and romantic stay and would go back in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: Ask to be in the main villa

Just came back from a 5 day stay at the hotel. Never received a warm welcome when we arrived .We were given the impression we were distrubing the owner Daniella. We checked in at the hotel around 6pm I was given the key and quiclky escorted out of the office. I Had to go back to the office to get the wi fi password when I started asking the girl who works in the office some questions I was more or less told I was taking up too much of her time, I presume the owner had somewhere to go and wanted to lock up for the evening. The rooms were not what was expected for a junrior suite they need to do extensive renovations. Breakfast is served at 8am not before and nowhere at the hotelcan you get a cup of coffee or juice you have to wait until 8 am. Thanks to the staff who made the experience bearable. As much as the owner was rude and impolite the staff were quite friendly.

Room Tip: ask for a room in the main building
