We have been to Walby three times now, from the Lancaster area, and find each time that our 4 year old grandson has a whale of a time and that we enjoy the day greatly also. This time we were there just before Easter, on a freezing cold day but were still happy enjoying the attractions outdoors; excellent hot meals in the cafe and hot drinks soon warmed us up and cafe staff extremely helpful and friendly. They clearly invest part of their takings in adding new facilities all the time so not dear at all, and by comparison with many attractions away from major cities, there is FAR more to do - we were there about 4 hours, and loved watching and joining in with grandson. The soft play area is fantastic, as it has 3 major, long, fast slides which parents and grandparents can go down alongside the children - our grandson loved the three-lane bumpy slide as his mum and grandpa could go down each side of him. One of the plummeting, vertical slides has a ball pond at the end, so we lifted grandson on to the slide below the vertical drop point so he could just slide the bit in to the ball pool. Great rope walk in the soft play area, and spinning poles which were much played upon. The baby soft play is superior to others we've been too also, and encourages the toddlers in as it has a machine which blows plastic balls up in the air and mesmerises everyone. Outside is wonderful on a fine day; zipline, pedal go karts, battery mini quads on a special track (admittedly £1 a go but our grandson loved hurtling round on them), a static play area of tractory things and sand to dig in, swinging things, trampolines, and another area with toddler size pedal tractors (and much more during the summer season). There's a superb range of animals for animal lovers: in the barn a beautiful cart horse, donkey, goats etc., lambs to feed, rabbits and guinea pigs to stroke (feeding times and pet times near entrance/till); also a brilliant poultry including the exquisite golden pheasant and magnificent Buff Orpington cockerel, piglets which could be fed (grandson loved this as you put 20p in a machine to get the pellets, then load them in a toy tractor which you winch to get it across to the middle of the piglets pen, where it offloads the pellets and the piglets scurry and squeal with delight). Outside further from the main building are alpacas and wallabies. All very memorable. WELL WORTH SPENDING A FEW MINUTES ON THEIR WEBSITE BEFORE GOING TO CHECK YOU DON'T MISS ANYTHING: IT HAS FEEDING TIMES ETC. A couple of recent poor reviews complained about the cost, but this is half way to a zoo, so extremely good value with all the other stuff; they do point out that on a busy day the soft play area gets very crowded - we've been lucky going out of school holidays apart from once, and I would always phone in school holidays to check best time to get the soft play area at its quietest - presumably early morning and nearer teatime crowds slack off. The reviews also questioned why adults should be charged, but Walby is so much more than just a standard soft play area as adults enjoy the slides and go karts etc. and the range of animals makes it just as fascinating for the adults. Always worth taking a camera. Well done Walby - the area around the Lake District used to be short on attractions for people with children so a great plus for the whole of the North of England and a lovely rural setting.
