“Friendly, comfortable little country pub”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

Here's a small pub (3 small rooms), in a small village only 4 miles from Carlisle, with great atmosphere. If hiking the Hadrian's Wall Path, you'll pass right by it, and it's a great spot for lunch, a brew, and a rest.

There's a small selection of beers on tap to choose from, including, of course, the ubiquitous Guinness. There's also a nice, small menu of mostly pub-type food. My choice was a steak sandwich. It consists of large chunks of steak, cooked the way you want it, on a large fresh roll with a nice crust, and comes with a little bit of gravy, and, of course, chips (fries). Very tasty. My dining companion had a good salad that also contained a large number of fresh blueberries.

The pub had a great feel to it – very welcoming. If in the area, give this pub a try.

“Good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2013

Went for an evening meal, staff could make customers aware of specials that are on, the food I had their version of steak pie which was good, and my partner had kung po chicken, there was enough food and it was quiet which is expected as it isn't really in a busy area... which lead to the quick service. We did notice one of the members of staff was drinking as she was serving.... but would go back

“Only go if you're desperate”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

We arrived at the Stag on a Saturday afternoon having walked 8 miles in blazing heat as part of our Hadrians wall walk. The pub looks lovely from the outside and is ok inside after that its all downhill. The bar staff appeared disinterested in serving with 3 of them being busy doing goodness knows what. When we asked if they were serving one immediately said yes and took our order of 2 pints real ale and 2 packets of crisps. The ale was cloudy and didn't settle and they only had one bag of prawn cocktail crisps in the whole pub! There was no hot food as they'd stopped serving that at 2pm but cold sandwiches were available ( this clearly didn't apply to the bar staff who proceeded to sit at the bar and eat a hot meal themselves!). The tuna sandwich was served on cheap supermarket bread rather than fresh. On going to the bar to get another round we were told they stopped serving at 2.30pm (no last orders bell) and closed at 3pm. At 2.50pm they were stood outside the door with keys in hand waiting to lock up. Unbelievable. I would never recommend this place

“Never a bad word to say”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013 via mobile

I have been coming to the stag on a regular basis for a good number of months now and every time I always come away satisfied
The pub has a very unique decor which leaves the place overflowing with character, paintings from local artists, old coins and other assorts in the ceiling.... (theres even a fish) I have sampled the lunch menu the evening menu and the Sunday lunch menu, all of which have a wide selection of foods from around the world or just your classic British pub food. The bar staff are always friendly, attentive and really make you feel welcome. I have eaten at the stag many times now and it is always consistently good fresh food with good local beers, everything you want from a country pub... I Would recommend the stag to anybody
