“old but gold”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2014

Visited this hotel after 16 years and brought back a lot of memories, was checked in with a smile just how i remembered the last time. Still has excellent service and good food, Rooms could do with some modernization but then again it gives you that excellent vintage feel. Would recommend this hotel for anyone traveling to Mombasa.

This was a return visit after 16 years and the hotel and its staff didn’t disappoint us . There are two parts to this lovely Kenyan Hotel. Travellers Club which is mainly all inclusive and Travellers Beach. Travellers Club is quite lively and offers plenty of activities for guests and their families. We prefer a quieter setting so the Somak representative arranged for us to move to Travellers Beach on our second day.
If you prefer a sterile international hotel then Traveller Beach is not for you. This hotel offers a personal service to all its guests without being intrusive or over bearing, the staff are not constantly looking for tips but are there when you need them. The recently refurbished rooms are clean and comfortable and there is an excellent range of food to suit all tastes either in the main restaurants, the Indian or Italian.
The gardens are well maintained with plenty of shade or sun. The pools in the resort are spotlessly clean and there are more than enough sunbeds for everyone. The garden Bistro and sea-view bar serve an excellent range of food and drinks and the staff go the extra mile to accommodate your needs.
The General Manager, Freddie Kiuru, really has his finger on the pulse and can be seen most days throughout the hotel managing by walking around and talking to guests and his staff.

Room Tip: If you like a live hotel with lots of activity choose Travellers Club for a more laid back, quieter...

Was in Mombassa for 2 days in December 2013 on a business trip; due to the shortage of good hotels in downtown, settled for the beach hotel. The hotel is a typical beach resort, and the layout is very nice, with a large pool meandering through from the lobby till almost the beach.Don't expect business hotel efficiency here, though...this is a holiday resort, and everything moves at a holiday pace! The check in was a bit slow and we had to wait around for about 15 minutes before we got our keys. I had forgotten to specify a sea facing room during reservation, so I was put in a room on the opposite side. The room is huge, sprawling..a big king size double bed AND a single bed, provided with mosquito nets, a 2 seater and a single seater couch, with a big coffee table, flat screen TV, tea & coffee maker, hair dryer etc. There is a walk-in wardrobe with more than enough space to keep your bags. The bathroom is also spacious, with a big bathtub. There is a decent sized balcony with two chairs and a small coffee table to sit outside. A word of caution about the safe deposit safe in the room- make sure that you lock it and open it a couple of times without putting anything inside, since it is an old style mechanical combination lock- my friend had kept his money and passport inside in the safe in his room and locked it, and could not open it later, so we had to call the manager to come and open the safe! The free breakfast buffet in the main dining hall is decent. They have a free wi-fi, but the signal is very inconsistent and weak, and the connection keeps dropping in most areas. They have 3 bars, one in the main building next to the lobby, one near the pool, and the best one- right on the beach with a lovely view, where you can relax with a nice cold drink in the evening and enjoy the sea breeze. They also have an Italian/ Continental restaurant and a North Indian/ Punjabi restaurant, food in both place were good. For the price I paid for the room, it was good value for money. The check out was also handled efficiently- but another word of caution- if you are paying by cash, make sure that you convert your dollars or Euros outside at some money exchange before you settle the bill, as the hotel exchange rates are atrociously low- more than 10% lower than outside market rates, and on top of that, they charge a 3% commission/tax on the exchange! Overall, a nice relaxed beach resort type hotel with a terrific ambiance, ideal for a holiday or a weekend getaway.

Room Tip: They have both traditional room with breakfast, and full board options, so choose based on what you...

This is my 3rd visit to this Hotel staying on the All Inclusive side and once again i wasn't disappointed we stayed for 18 days over Christmas and New Year, our party consisted of myself, my mum and her friend. The rooms are spacious and spotlessly clean having clean towels every day there is a constant supply of hot water but do be warned the water is very very hot i used to have a shower just using the cold tap as it was warm enough to take a shower with without the hot water added( there is a sign in the bathroom warning about the water being so hot). The food at Travellers as usual was exceptionally good they cater for just about everyone with plenty of variety and have different themed nights Swahili,Kenyan and Austrian to mention a few. Our waiters were Walter and Bushman(aka Big Daddy and Bushman) two of the funniest guys you could meet. The restaurant on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve moves into the carpark where all the food is displayed beautifully and you can eat as much or as little as you want to.
There is different entertainment on each night the Animation Team usually put a good show on and work hard on their routines and the acrobats are really good there is usually a Karaoke night on too .
The staff and management do everything to ensure that your stay is a memorable one and nothing is too much trouble for them.
The pool is kept clean at all times the poolside snack bar serves food till about 6pm and the menu usually changes on a monday.
I would recommend changing money with Samson the guy who sells safaris he can usually be found near the little kiosk at the top of the steps that lead onto the beach he will get a better rate than the hotel .
The beach boys can be a bit of a problem but a polite no thankyou is usually enough but as my mum has been going there for the past 12 years they don't tend to bother us now.
We visited Haller Park where they have Giraffes,Hippos,Crocodiles,Giant Tortoises and Monkeys and is a nice day out.
We take over lots of clothes, toys ,books, pens and sweets for the children over there and to see their faces when you give them something makes it so worthwhile they are so appreciative.
I love this hotel the staff and the Kenyan people are so friendly i have made some good friends (Kenyans and other guests ) and i now feel confident enough to come here on my own again in the next few months as i know that there will always be someone there that i know .
Would i recommend this hotel YOU BET I WOULD ,i can't wait to get back there

We had our honeymoon at the travellers beach. The hotel is split in two, all inclusive and not. We were all inclusive and not disappointed.
The food was freshly made, a huge choice and always different.
The staff were great, special mention to Jonathon (waiter) and Kennedey (Trainee) who were outstanding all week. Very welcoming, nothing was too much trouble.

Pool was clean and kept nice, never too busy, pool bars great to grab a drink while swimming.

Will certainly retun to this place.

First of all: We stayedhere for two weeks over Christmas and New Year's, though we were away for a safari for a couple of days. So all in all this review covers about 9 days in that period.

Hotel, room and location:

The hotel is not quite new but well kept. There is a smaller albeit much louder "Club" for all-inclusive guests and the larger but more relaxed "hotel" for everyone else. All guests can use all facilities, so there's a bit of a mix that is no problem at all. We had a warm welcome and were treated extremely friendly by everyone in the hotel. Our room was not new, but especially for African standards extraordinarily clean. Our room attendant did a great job! The hotel is right on the beach, typically about 30-45 Mins from Mombasa Moi Airport, though on a weekend or holiday afternoon everybody's streaming out to the public beach which can easily double the length of the trip since roads in Kenya are a mess. The Hotel itself is surrounded by palm gardens and small parks that make you feel secluded, in a positive way.

Beach:

The beach is a problem. It's beautiful alright and just a few steps from the hotel, but unless you're black yourself, don't expect to use it regularly. There are plenty of beach boys trying to sell everything possible and impossible and saying that this was a mere annoyance, as it is in so many other countries, would be a massive understatement. They won't leave you in peace, ever, and if you got rid of one, the next one's already waiting. That counts for the nights too! Apart from that, we didn't find the offers to be real bargains. Most trips weren't much cheaper than in the hotel, with the exception of safaris. And they're better booked on the internet anyways, due to the large amount of money otherwise required in cash. Wildlife Kenya or Join Africa Safaris, e.g., aren't more expensive than the beach boys' offers but certainly far more reliable. So in short: The beach is nice, but don't expect to use it.

Entertainment:

The hotel has not been built as an entertainment but as a relaxing facilty, although, some entertainment is provided. We were greeted with a booklet covering all the planned entertainment during the holiday season, but most of the interesting stuff (like Swahili lessons) didn't take place. A problem of the hotel's design is that loud evening entertainment, like discos, cannot take place without being heard in every room. Luckily, the discos end at 11, though. And there are only 1 to 2 during a week. Entertainment on the gala nights (New Year's and Christmas) was fabulous, the hotel staff pays very close attention to details.

Food:

Food, in general, is served on a very high level, particularly on the gala nights. The house wine (the only wine served by glass) is poor, but else you have a plentiful choice of drinks to go along your dinner. The waiters are outstanding and there was some kind of dinner topic roughly every two nights (Kenyan, Austrian, seafood, Swahili ...) so that it never got repetitive. The only downside is that dinner is very late (from 7:30) to breakfast being finished early (by 9:30). That didn't suit our preferences and was a nuisance on New Year's Day, but then you can get snacks all day at the Pool or Beach Bars, everything reasonably priced.

All in all, we had a lovely experience and would certainly come again. What there was in downsides, hotel staff always was extremely helpful to solve as far as they could - and apart from that, there was nothing we couldn't expect. After all, this is Africa and one of the poorest countries in the world, always bear that in mind!

Short: Loved it.
