Just got back from a visit to Ypres and stayed at the Protea, great hotel, great location and Allain and Annie the perfect hosts. If you are planning a trip to Ypres the best place to stay.

I found The Protea B&B via www search. My purpose was to visit the battlefields of WW1 to trace the footsteps of family members who served in AIF in Flanders. Alain and Annie were ideal hosts. it has been my first visit to continental Europe. Alain's tour in association with his preparatory research re my battalions of interest allowed me to achieve more than I thought possible. I hired a push bike to explore the places of interest. Alain was able to negotiate an early start to the hire season to enable my bicycle explorations. There is no WiFi but internet access is available on request. Breakfasts are substantial and looked forward to. The washing service I found excellent.
The clientele of this B&B while I was there had common interest leading to engaging discussion. The Protea is within sight of Polygon Wood. Ypres Railway Station is a short distance away and Alain ran me in to meet my train.

Room Tip: A good base/area - beginner recreational cyclists.

The Protea B&B is just on the outskirts of Ypres and located in a prime position for visiting the Ypres Salient. Alain and Annie were fantastic hosts, providing a warm and inviting atmosphere from the off. I'm not one for clichés but we really were made to feel apart of their family. The B&B decor is vibrant and bright, with a South African theme running throughout, which is idyllic to relax in after a hard day, exploring the trenches. Do not be fooled by the very cheap prices (€36 pp per night) as this is not reflected in the service. The service we received was high quality and more importantly had a personal touch, so much so that Alain even joined us on our battlefield tour to impart his extensive knowledge, which was informative and worth while. Alain is always on hand to office advice and guidance on the local area and WW1.

If you looking for a cheap B&B that is cosy, warm and inviting and delivers a top end service, then you could not find better that the Protea. Thanks Alain & Annie.

The Protea is several kilometres outside Ypres and is accessible by a frequent bus service and reasonably priced taxis. The accommodation is extremely well ordered; comfortable beds in very clean rooms and serviced devotedly on a daily basis. The breakfast was varied, more than ample and thoughtfully provided. While Annie quietly cultivates dignified care of guests, Alain is a very hospitable host who looks to serving the needs particularly those interested in War sites. His knowledge is extensive and he is an excellent site guide, if required, and can answer questions, or find answers to questions from his accumulated resources. My emotional and intellectual search for my Grandfather's Ypres Salient service was ably assisted by the accommodation and two delightful hosts.

The purpose of our visit was to take my 80 year old father to visit Ypres and see where his uncle fought and died in WW1. We found the Protea B&B ideal for our purposes. It was clean and very central and owners Alain and his wife really pulled out all the stops for us. If you are looking for 5 star luxury this is not for you but would recommend it for anyone wanting to explore Ypres and surrounds.

A real added benefit for us was Protea B&B (Alain the owner) runs personalised tours of Ypres and WW1battles. We undertook a 6 hour personalised tour with Alain which proved extremely interesting and informative, culminating with a visit to the grave of my fathers, uncle. I would definitely recommend anyone looking to do a 'package tour' of Ypres for WW1 battles, that the money is well spent using Alain's experience as doing it ourselves would have taken at least 2 days and we would not have obtained the rich detail provided by Alain that made such a difference to the experience. While one can do 'general tours', the flexibility of having your own tour (and deciding what wanting to see) makes the experience that much more personal

Price wise overall (accommodation and tour) we found it extremely good value for money and would not have any hesitation in recommending to others looking for a similar experience to ourselves

If I went back to Ypres again i would definitely stay at the Protea B&B

This family run B & B with Alan as the host and his hard working wife behind the scenes gives a warm and friendly place to stay during your stay in Belgium it is just out side Ypres and so gives freedom in all directions whether you are going to the Menin Gate or to the far too many Grave sites from the first world war, something Alan can answer many of your questions about. Would I stay there again! of course I would and suggest you do the same
