“Worst place I have ever stayed in!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2014

We booked a 2 night stay with a groupon and were looking forward to a special weekend walking, relaxing and enjoying nice food-thankfully the walking was great and we found a decent hotel in town to eat in on Saturday nigh otherwise the weekend would have been a disaster!! I would NOT recommend Sportsmans Inn to anyone!! The tiny bedroom was dirty with an old carpet, paint off walls, lumpy bed, holes in walls and hardly any space as the door opened right in front of the bed. The so called en suite was disgusting with rust and mould in the shower, flaking paint above sink and again so small!! Next time we will definitely be camping!! I have stayed in many places around the World and have been used to very basic accommodation but this is definitely the worst ever!!
On our first night we ate in the pub. I was looking forward to the slow cooked lamb but were warned against having this by a waitress who said other people had complained so instead opted for steak which altho cold was edible...unlike a mouldy tomato which was served with it!! (I discovered this when I turned the tomato upside down..not sure how the chef didn't see this!! As a result we found a great hotel in town to eat in on the second evening! Breakfast was basic and altho I would not normally like tinned tomatoes I was pleased these were served after my experience the night before! We chatted to the other guests who like us were tempted to leave after 1 night but ended up staying simply because we had paid in advance.
Hope no one else makes the same mistake as we did!!

Room Tip: Downstairs room was awful!!

Terrible cold out of date wouldn't let a dog sleep on the beds, out of date furniture and very cold asked for more bedding was told not got any and heating would be on all night not true it was freezing. Manager thought it was funny when we complained about the rooms .we only stayed one night instead off two manager still asked for more money on top off what we had already paid ,won't be going back .

Room Tip: Don't go

Stayed Friday the 21st march 2014 with my sister and 2 friends, what can I say but "DO NOT STAY HERE" a tent in the car park would have been more luxurious, Carpets are threadbare, asked for a blanket as the rooms are freezing only to be told none are available but they would leave the heating on which was barely above freezing, showers rusty and in bad repair, place is very dim and dank, We had a meal in the evening and had to wait 45 minutes after the starter for the main cold meal "would have been quicker and better to drive to a chipshop" £13.50 for fish and chips who are they kidding!!! The cleaner commented that everyone complains about the state of the place, the owner/manager is ignorant and gives the impression he could'nt care less and guests are just a hindrance. This place is a health and safety violation and should be closed down immediately, I will make a report for the environmental agency, standby for a visit.

Room Tip: Stay some where else.

We has a voucher to stay 2 nights. we had a nice meal the first night . My meal was cold so I had to send it back but was nice when warm. The bedroom however was awful. Threadbare carpet. 1950's tatty furnitue' mould in the shower tray, rusty shower and a rather warn toilet seat = gross..... hence to say we left early the next morning. The landlord was rude and stated the rooms were fine ! er hello for £ 60 a night I dont think so. needs totally refurbishing. would certainly not recommend which is a shame as the area is lovely

Originally a 2 night stay, left after 1. Rooms are terrible, photos that advertise the Sportsman terribly misleading, threadbare carpets, rusty shower, cold uninvitng bedrooms. Spoke to the landlord about state of rooms, totally disinterested, couldn't give a damn. He actually asked for his £20 per room Friday supplement - a disgraceful start to a much awaited weekend away.

Had a meal at the Sportsman Inn on a Thursday evening. Nobody else in the pub, cold , no atmosphere. Although there were candles on the tables non of them were lit. The meal was average , portions small. Half way through our main course we were asked if we would like to order a desert as the kitchen was closing at 9pm? Felt rushed to finish our meal, they started turning the outside lights off etc whilst we were still eating. Looked a bit shabby inside , could do with some refurbishing. Prefer the pubs in the village.

just stayed for two nights via groupon its a real shame because this place has potential just needs refurbishing. The room was like a 1950's hell sort of place you imagine copping for on honeymoon after the war. the bed was small and bedding thin the actual duvet itself was disgusting all stained and thin the covers were clean and the towels . We had one meal in the hotel dry chicken in bacon and my boyfriend had gammon the chips I swear had been warmed up from god knows when. We were going to leg it after one night but stayed the two avoiding both the evening meal and breakfast we ate at a lovely pub a few miles down the road called The lamb it was lovely food the Sportsman was empty and I'm not surprised there was another couple who felt the same as us she had encountered a mouldy tomato at dinner and they also defected to another place for food the royal hotel hayfield said it was lovely. with groupon some you win some you lose this was definately a loss. I cant see how it can keep going its a shame,.
