“Great place. Will go again!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2013

Just back from a Groupon trip. Had a really good time. Ideal location and so much to do if you are out doorsy! Room 4 was big, front facing. It was warm and cosy and the most lovely crisp white comfy bed! Shower bit puny but are in lots of other places too. Had to share loo, no problem. Lovely building and great staff. Meal on the first night was first class. Breakfast great quality and really yummy. Had a great time. Thank you

A warm friendly welcome, great food and atmosphere.

The staff at The Sportsman are second to none; friendly, attentive, efficient.

We were saved from a disastrous weekend when our previous long-standing booking at another establishment was cancelled and we were squeezed in at very short notice and looked after like royalty.

The room was comfortable and spacious with usual facilities (en suite, tv, refreshments).

Couldn't have had a better stay. It's nice to find somewhere that knows how to look after it's customers.

We bought a Groupon deal for this pub in Hayfield. The deal included 2 nights B&B plus 2 course dinner on first night.

On arrival the landlord showed us to our room, adding that there was now another double room available and we could choose between the two - a large-ish twin room on the first floor or a much smaller one on the ground floor. We discovered that the ground floor room was very close to the pub itself and that the sash window was wedged open with a piece of cardboard. We chose the twin room.

Before I begin to criticise the premises, I need to point out that the accommodation was spotlessly clean, the white linen was crisp and the facilities were very clean. - but
the en-suite was no bigger than a broom cupboard with very tired holders for towel, toilet roll etc There was a large amount of rust on the shower fitting and the shower surround was also rusty (it must have been metal !!) The floor surround had obviously leaked in the past as it had been re-sealed by someone in a blindfold. There were no shelves in the en-suite, for toiletries to be stored, we had to store on the floor, and the sink was too small to hold even a toothbrush mug, without it being constantly knocked into the sink.

We had chosen a warm period to visit and wished to open a window for fresh air, but soon discovered that the kitchen fan was right outside our window and opening a window meant that we had a room full of cooking smells, and it was noisy.

The carpet was worn and threadbare in places, as was the stair carpet leading to the room, and was mismatched with that on the landing. The banister rail had once been stained dark brown, but had had most of the paint worn off, so that it was now brown and white.

I hope that the owner takes note of all the poor reviews that his pub has received. both from me and lots of others and does something about it. It is such a shame that a good pub, serving good food, including breakfast, which is also very clean, means that I for one, would not stay there again until some refurbishment work had been done.

The staff were all very professional and helpful

Went for tea on a Wednesday night. Very warm welcome by helpful barman, and seated at a table near the window. Ordered the meal at the bar as they were slow to come to the table but the barman apologised and said they were short staffed. Food very slow to come out but when it did arrive it was lovely, one of the nicest meals we've had for a long time. The pub itself doesnt seem to have much atmosphere but the food gets ten out of ten, as do the very friendly staff. If you're not in a rush and you don't want a fancy restaurant, this is good value.

You could not get a better location fir walking Kinder Scout. Although the pub is a little dated it is welcoming and friendly. The bedroom we were in was a bit 'tired' carpets threadbare but it was clean and adequate. The big success with this hotel is it's food. The menu was not your usual pub grub offering. Good choice, well cooked and beautifully presented. The breakfast was massive and cooked to order. The staff were pleasent and helpful, we had an annoying ticking noise in our radiator which the landlord worked on for some time to make sure he sorted it for us. Over all it was a good stay and we would definitly go back.

Traditional pub with loads of atmosphere. When they saw my height we were immediately offered another room with a larger bed! Great selection of beers & other drinks. Food was excellent, service prompt and friendly. Room was plain, but warm, clean & comfortable. Location superb, with excellent walking country right outside the door. Although it's on the road there is so little traffic this isn't an issue.

So firstly, this review is only regarding the food at the Sportsman Inn having never stayed there.

First visited the Sportsman a few years ago now and regularly make the visit whilst walking in the area. Hands down, this place serves the best Sunday Lunch I've ever had. The landlord has always been welcoming, and the staff fantastic. There is always the choice of Roast Beef or Lamb, and occasionally others. Everything served is fresh and cooked on site, with huge yorkshire puddings and gravy you'd gladly drink from a pint glass.

Have enjoyed other dishes at the Sportsman too - the menu is changed during the different seasons - and never had a bad experience!

The place itself has a warm, old-fashioned style interior. Some might say its dark and needs updating, but its a pub with character and perfect as it is. If you're in the area climbing Kinder Scout, stop by here afterwards to replenish those burnt calories and I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
