“Lovely Lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2013

Enjoyed a lovely lunch here on a Saturday. Relatively quiet and service very friendly. Food really good and nice choice of real ales. Keep your eyes peeled if approaching from the east as its easy to miss this place, on right as you enter village.

Did not stay here but had dinner whilst walking St Cuthbert's Way. Excellent diverse menu and very high quality food and beers to go with it! Good value.
We also had breakfast there the following day (this is available even if you are not staying at the hotel) and that was extremely good value at £10 per head for a full cooked breakfast, plus ceral, toast, fruit juices etc.

We went out to kelso Garden Centre and then drove out for lunch admiring the hilly countryside on the lovely sunny day we had yesterday.
It was a bank holiday in England( but not in scotland) so we had booked. We arrived 5 mins early said my name was asked where we wanted to sit and if we required a drink and given great menus. We satoutside in the sun at big old wooden tables. The wine was a bit dearer than average but the house wine was lovely.
I had pidgeon breast with oats and beetroot (very lovely and filling) and my partner had beutifil goats cheese. She had a very nice chicken dish and my lamb shank was the best I have tasted for many years and big too.
The staff were very efficient and the serving times were good for a relaxing but hungry pair.
We will highly recoment a visin to this quiet village to everyone!

Really good choice with concentration on local fish, meat and game. Several quite 'different' things available. Service was efficient and food was very good.

We never saw or were offered a wine list though.

Myself and a colleague were up in the area on business attending the Border Union Kelso Show.

We were recommended The Border by our customer and what a recommendation !!!

This is the review of the rooms only.

Although no real reception as such we caught one of the waiters who was coming from the kitchen and he got our keys, showed us to our rooms and explained breakfast, evening meals etc etc

My room was a twin, very spacious with TV, proper bottles of water, Walkers shortbread biscuits, great choice of teas and coffee, with a kettle and a pot.

The bathroom was similarly spacious with a basket of shampoos by the shower to use, as well as free ones which were on the sink.

The shower was a little weak and not very fanned out, but it was fine enough, and the towels were a bit small, im only 5' 7" and struggled and so you can imagine my burly 6' 2" colleague who is a tad rotund did have some bother!!

Wi-Fi was ok in my room but only because I was above the lounge, its limited in the hotel rooms because the walls are thick so my colleague could get no wi-fi.

Overall an excellent stay and would definately return.

tips:

- get larger bath towels
- try and get another router so wi-fi accessible to all hotel rooms
- invest in better shower for Cheviot room

This was the perfect way to end my Pennine Way walk after a couple of weeks of roughing it in a tent, bunkhouses and hostels. I was delighted by the friendliness of the staff, who honoured the Wainwright pledge of a free drink to finishers of the Pennine Way without batting an eyelid. I just loved the sheer luxury of the ensuite bathroom with a bath and Radox laid on, the crispy laundered table linen at breakfast and the delicious food. Unfortunately I had to dash off the next morning but would love to have lingered longer.

Room Tip: Some rooms don't have a view but this wasn't an issue for me

Stayed here in 1998 and it was fantastic in The Pennine Room.
Returned in July 2013 during the heatwave and was put in The Treviot Room. It was more like a small prison cell and a "sweat" box. No air conditioning, no window to the outside, only a roof window to open. The food was average and not cheap.
This is the hotel at the start or finish of the Pennine Way so you need a good night's sleep which we didn't get due to the heat and clostrophobia feeling in the room. Very small bathroom and the shower water was luke warm and weak. The lady serving breakfast was lovely, but the rest of the staff were not "warm"
I do not recommend staying here unless you can get The Pennine Room and only for the convenience of doing The Pennine Way.

Room Tip: I only recommend you take The Pennine Room. Keep well away from The Treviot Room.
