“Fantastic return trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2012

Returned to this lovely, atmospheric and timeless hotel and was not disapppinted. The location, views, and most importantly, the staff make this a very special place.

The locally sourced food is delightful and the staff have no problem offering alternative vegetarianchoices. The bedroom was comfortable and cool. The beach and beach restaurant were my favourite areas & helped make my holiday perfect.

Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a non-corporate, bland, hotel chain.

Hope to return again next year ;)

Room Tip: Worth paying a little extra for a room at the front

Stayed here for a week in late September. It's a long drive (3.5 hours) from Naples airport.
The hotel is in very large, well maintained grounds growing a lot of the ingredients used at meal time. The hotel is very isolated and is not within easy walking distance of anywhere so if you like to go for a walk, as we do, after dinner I'm afraid that's not on. The food and cooking is average Italian, nothing exciting or unusual. The breakfast is very basic and if you want an egg it cost an extra four euros !! Having said that the setting for eating breakfast is superb, a balcony with an unrestricted view over the Med. The rooms could do with freshening up and the woodwork (eg doors) needs some work done on them.
The staff are great, very responsive and pro-active.
The owners behaviour was extremely bizarre. He spent all day sitting in a room just inside the hotel entrance occassionally going outside for a cigarette. Whenever a paying guest spoke to him (eg to say buon giorno) he totally blanked them and walked by !!!
The beach, and access to it, is a treat. I would recommend having lunch there everyday, as we did, It's a wonderful setting.
All in all we had a good holiday, but that was down to the weather which was wall to wall sunshine. We will not be rushing back.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view

My stay at the San Michele was the most amazing stay of my life. It was TRUE paradise. Perfect escape from the touristy feel of beautiful (yet-crowded) Rome. The owners made you feel so at home and the entire staff was delightful. Breathtaking view and the beach was unlike anything I have ever experienced. I will definitely be returning soon for another trip soon.

This iconic establishment has clearly seen better days and it is somewhat of a tragedy that it's past grandeur facilities and position are not properly exploited.

It has a few warts - air conditioning inoperable, no wifi except in one or two common areas, basic and dated furnishings, rock hard beds etc.

If you feel like however stepping back to the 50s and 60s this is your place.

The full board arrangement provides great value as the meals were exceptional - probably the best pasta in Italy!

The access to the beach is fun and yet reasonably efficient and rewards you on arrival.

Situated on 45hectares this majestic hotel sits high up on the mountain encompassing full 360 degree view of the Tyrreanian sea, the decore is dated back to the families history and it is run by the family. The rooms are all well decorated with space and comfort in mind and the food was fresh and organic. We thoroughlly enjoyed our stay and the lift to our private beach was an added bonus.

Room Tip: Corner suites are large and sunny with private balcony.

te which contains its own organic farm that provides the hotel with it's food. All meals were organic, interesting, with plenty of variety on the menu The views are fantastic and the staff are wonderful. Nothing is too much trouble and the owners who manage the estate ask you to treat the hotel like a home rather than a hotel. It is finely furnished with a lot of art works and a beautiful terrace overlooking the sea. There is a good pool area and pleasant gardens to walk in as well as a golf course. The fairways had been attacked by a wild boar when we were there and were being repaired! Bedrooms at the back do not have a view but they are very quiet with no road noise. The main road is below the villa and can get very busy. The hotel beach is reached by a 92 metre high lift which takes about 2 minutes to descend so would not suit anyone with a lift phobia. There is a bar on the beach and a kitchen that serves food in the season. There is a village a couple of kilometres away but because of the busy road it is too difficult to walk there. The hotel does have a minibus but the area is so beautiful that car hire would be very useful to explore the many hilltop villages. The area is very unspoiled and tourists made welcome as so far there are not too many of them. This is a very beautiful place to stay.

Room Tip: Romms at the front have fabulous views, some with balconies but some road noise. Rooms at the back h...

So after driving along the coast for miles and miles on our way to the Amalfi from Sicily this seemed like a nice mid way point when we were planning our trip. After going through so many tourist towns that all looked the same we saw our GPS was actually not straying from the highway but that our hotel was on the very same route. What a surprise when we arrived. This place had to have been so Grand. Golf course, tennis courts, level after level of sitting areas, terraces, lemon groves, private beach and sunning patios and so on and so on. It reminded me of a play "Brighten Beach Memoirs". The reception had a bit of trouble with English but the owner seemed to show up out of nowhere to answer any questions. Her first question was "Are you going to the beach" we didn't even realize there was a beach . After dumping our luggage into our cozy room with a view of the lemon grove below we were instructed to take the lift down . If you have a fear of heights and very old elevators , BEWARE. The lift takes about 90 seconds to get to the bottom and comes with all the noises you would associate with that. The beach and patios below will leave you breathless, waves crashing in totally oblivious to the fact that a once glorious hotel hung on the cliff above. This place is where you imagine great novels are written and all the other cliches that go with it. They were obviously working on some renovations but you could tell it was only if time allowed to the one worker who we spotted. My spouse was more then impressed with all the photo opps that awaited us below. After a stroll around more of the property we came to a strong conclusion all this place needed was about 50 gallons of white paint to restore some of the lost charm. Dinner consisted of the 2 of us and about 50 people on a conference of some kind. The waiters all sprang into action with the Maitre d" throwing orders left and right. We were attended to with the utmost attention and treasure the experience. This place has to be visited and hopefully one day will be restored to its old glory but for us we already imagined it that way.

Room Tip: make sure you get a view of seafront
