“charming and the people are wonderful.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

Athenry is a very historic town. The castle was a very interesting tour, and everyone was helpful in the town. You will enjoy other historic sites in Athenry. We were standing on a street corner and trying to decide which restaurant for a good cappuccino and light lunch, when a gentleman stopped his car and asked if he would assist. He even advised us of a good restaurant, and that his family went often; the best cappuccino ever. Even offered to walk with us. I kept thinking on the visits to different towns and untouched sites "that I have never been to heaven, but I have been to Ireland." The weather was great.

“A fine quick stop- but there are better, bigger castles”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2012

Bigger isnt always better- and Athenry Castle isn't bad, but it is a little small and unless you get a guided tour, there isn't a lot of information provided on site. All in all, the visit took about 15-20 minutes. I can see how castle buffs would be drawn to the restoration of the walls and keep. If you are in Anthenry I would say- go visit, but I wouldnt go out of my way.

“Nice day in eastern Galway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2012

Athenry is a historic town and worth a stroll around. The castle has been nicely restored and there is an audio visual presentation as well as good historical commentary on the walls. There are other ruins to visit in town as well: an abbey and city gate etc.

“A trip to Ireland just for this experience!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2012

The Medieval Town, coupled with the archetecture of the Fortified Keep and surrounding walls are worth the total expense of making the trip. The guided tour, which you will have to ask for...makes the visit a spendid historical adventure. Enering the town through the original tower gate is an experience you can't miss!!!!
The partial restoration of the Fortified Keep is so well done it's exciting and the staff there is beyond terrific. It made our trip which consisted of weeks of looking at fortified towers, castles and keeps.
