“Friendliest Staff Ever”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2014

Attended a Travel Bags luncheon and booked the Valentines Special to stay over. On arrival we decided to book an extra night. Our experience was no less that wonderful. Having spent a majority of my career in hospitality I can only say that I have NEVER found a venue where the entire compliment of staff are so happy and eager to please. The rock pools and waterfalls set an ambience of relaxation and the rooms were spacious and airy. We will definitely return.

Spent one night at this property on our tour around South Africa. The accommodation was quaint but a little dated. The atmosphere was peace and tranquility. Would have liked to have spent a further night there to relax after our long journey to SA. Our room was spacious with more than adequately stocked bathroom. The evening meal and subsequent breakfast which were buffet were tasty and plentiful. The staff were accomodating and were keen to make us feel welcome. Should we ever return to South Africa we would certainly think about booking this lodge for a couple of nights

First of all, when we booked this place, we had no idea what it would be like. We were just looking for someplace neat to stay for a few nights, that was close enough to Johannesburg to be able to drive there to reach our evening flight back to the USA. Having spent most of our trip in Kruger Game Preserve and sight-seeing in the areas around Berlin Falls, we wanted a few days to just relax and chill before the long flight back. This place was absolutely wonderful. We have been there again on our most recent visit to South Africa. What this place has is lovely accommodations & surroundings, and some wild game, of the hoofed variety, plus an aviary. Another thing they have, which you can book a tour of, is a re-created Ndebele village. We really enjoyed this a lot and learned about the tribe's history, dwellings and customs. Another really interesting thing to do is go to the closest town, Cullinan, and take a tour of the working diamond mine. We took the"surface" tour which took a couple of hours. It takes 8 hours to take the underground tour, and we are definitely going to do that on our next visit. The restaurant at the hotel is buffet, both dinner and breakfast. We didn't eat lunch there, but it is probably buffet, too. The food was varied and really good.

Room Tip: I don't think this place has any bad rooms, but if you want something closer to reception and th...

We stayed at the Mountain Lodge set in beautiful gardens with streams, little bridges to cross and lovely views. lots of birds and an ideal setting to sit on the veranvah, drink in hand !!

The rooms were large with a comfortable bed with fresh, clean linen. Very quiet except for a noisy fridge. Coffe making facilities with a small kitchen area.

All very nice but the bathroom was in urgent need of a complete refurbishment., Everything was dated and having a shower was a challenge as there was no water pressure and what came out was luke warm.

The evening meal was buffet style with a good variety of food, served in an very pleasant semi open setting. Breakfast was equally good.

A fabulous setting but looking a little tired.

Timeline of our experience below , we are so glad we only booked for one night . If we could we would have left the same night of arrival !

- Call center agent did not return call upon inquiring regarding room type
- On arrival they did not have our booking so I had to get my laptop out and show booking confirmation. The receptionist was just as clueless
- No assistance with luggage
- The room was not maintained and outdated. It felt like we were at a motel . Complimentary water was not even provided
- The satellite tv channels did not work and was resolved after a couple of hours
- Dinner was so bad that we were done in less than 40 minutes. No starters, mediocre mains and desert .To top it off the ambiance was dull and morbid
-The following morning breakfast was just as bad , with the added delight of flies all over the food which cut short our appetite
- The service is also average and you will find the staff poorly dressed and walking around with a lack of direction

This place is definitely not 4 star but rather sits between 2-3 star . We have been to 3 star hotels that are far better !

I loved this place. You really feel you have arrived in Africa. The staff were lovely and very professional. I had a lovely room, more like an apartment which was clean and with wonderful views, with a little veranda to take in the beautiful surroundings. I Agee with another reviewer that the decor is a little tired and the curtains were not very effective in keeping out the light but this did not detract from a wonderful relaxing stay. A beautiful touch was retiring to bed to find a beautiful little african story placed on my bed :-)

The lodge itself is fine and located in a lovely isolated setting. The rooms are spacious and well equipped and have character in that they were a converted stable. The food was very average both for the buffet dinner and for breakfast. What really let the place down was the service. Check out is normally 11.00 and as we were leaving only at 16.00 hours we asked for an extension. We were given an extra hour until mid-day. If the hotel had been busy fair enough but it was empty. When it was time to go the hotel staff suddenly seemed surprised that we were not in our room and it seemed an extension was possible. Not impressed! We had reported that the fridge ran continuously but nobody seemed to care even though much is made of being green when it came to towels. Rooms need better curtaining to keep out the light.

Dear Michael H,
Thank you for taking the time to review our establishment. We welcome all constructive reviews as we believe they can only assist us in bettering our levels of service. Have been through your points raised we are quite surprised that service was the main complaint. Zebra Country Lodge receives many compliments on their service levels and staff friendliness. However, we can assure you that these points have been forwarded to Lodge Management and are being addressed. We trust that this isolated incident will not deter you from returning to our Lodge, especially with the wonderful Summer Specials coming out this week! We look forward to welcoming you back to in the near future and the opportunity to create a truly Legendary experience for you.
