“Fantastic Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

We stayed here for 3 nights and it was like staying in a castle or palace. The entire place inside and out is beautifully decorated, but not for someone that likes to stay at top modern hotels. We ate dinner there the first night which was somewhat expensive but good. The breakfast was not so good. We didn't see any molded jams, but chose not to eat breakfast the next 2 mornings. Some of the staff was friendly, others were not but could have been due to their limited English and our limited Italian language skills. They also have beautiful grounds but due to bad weather during our stay we did not get to explore all of that. Traffic from the autostrada to the hotel is somewhat chaotic, watch out for vehicles pulling out or backing out right in front of you without warning. If in the area again we would definetly stay there again.

Rooms are very noisy, small and very dark.
Breakfast was terrible, molded jams, stail bread, cakes which were not replaced for at elast three days. Milk, yoghurt, etc was not refrigated. Ham was disgusting and cheese was dried out.
There are no other facilities then an absurd outside unheated pool.
The hotel is located in the middle of nowhere.
People were not friendly, great contrast with the rest of the naple area.
The hotel is only visited by asian touroperators or very old italian guests.

Room Tip: Dont go there.

We stayed at the Grand Hotel La Sonrisa for one night only when we were visiting Pompeii. We were the only guests at the hotel, but this did not change the way they were supposed to treat us. Actually it was one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in. We arrived at 9:30 pm and were offered an expensive, but good meal, with primi and secondi piatti, and a nice bottle of wine. The breakfast (included in the price) was served in the room, at no extra cost. The staff was really helpful and we were treated as kings. Decoration is quite eccentric, but the rooms are comfy and spacious.

Room Tip: Spacious, quiet rooms

We were at the hotel in September and we enjoyed it very much!
Everything was just perfect. The hotel was very impressive and it seems that emphasized all the small details to create an amazing experience. The room was impressive, spacious, cozy and comfortable. The bathroom also.
The weddings that took place at the hotel led to a more enchanting experience. Seems perfect for a honeymoon!
The hotel, the room the design, the nice staff, the food- everything was so dreamy!
Fantastic!

We stayed at Hotel La sonrisa for 3 nights while visiting Pompeii and Herulaneum. An island a midst the chaos of the surrounding area. The staff was absolutely wonderful..On our first night, we came down for dinner and someone met/escorted us to the bar for an appertivo...when we were finished with that, we were escorted to the dining room...Yes there were weddings going on while we were there, but the entire hotel is out of Disneyland in any case. It is about a good 20 minute drive to Pompeii because the streets are very small and traffic is slow. But we would still prefer staying in the peaceful oasis of La Sonrisa then in the more questionable streets near Pompeii.

The only negative is the extremely slow wifi. Both my husband and I are professionals and depend on working on the internet so that we can also travel a lot in Italy. The internet continually disconnected because the bandwidth is simply not adequate to accomodate anything more extensive than simply e-mails.

How I wish I could give this 5 stars !
The staff certainly deserve it as they are friendly, polite and nothing is too much trouble. 5 stars for them !!!
The restaurant food in the evening was excellent and really good value. We ate in Sorrento and the food was awful....the hotel food was tasty, tender and worth the money. Again, 5 stars !!!

We had kindly been given a suite and it was amazing.....OTT gilt effect and bling but big, comfortable and so clean.

However, a couple of problems that really shouldn't be spoiling this hotel.

1. NO SHOWER....there was a huge bath with air jets but it took ages to fill and the water was sometimes too tepid to make it warm enough. Water temperature would have been just about acceptable in a shower where you get in, wash and get out but not hot enough to soak in a bath, especially one pumping air through it, cooling it further. There is a hand shower on the taps but I had to stand and shower down my husband and son when their hair was washed....struggled to do my own and I have longer, thick hair. Baths just never leave me feeling clean. Huge bathroom with 2 wash basins, bidet, toilet and huge whirlpool bathand still loads of space......so why miss the shower ?????
2. The bathroom door didn't shut....let alone lock.
3. Had a little balcony which would have been lovely if it looked at the grounds or pool ( even if the handle and lock dropped off it ) but the view was of another huge patio / balcony area. I don't know who had this patio except it appeared they lived there...clothes rails, potted plants and a woman hosing down her patio with her husband "bellowing" down to hotel staff in the grounds below at times. Nice !!
4. Had to share one bedside lamp....I won !!!

The hotel is convenient for Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius, Sorrento and Naples by car ( if you dare drive), out of the way if not!
The pool is lovely to relax by after sight seeing but no-one seemed to care for the area. On our first day, yesterdays towels were still in baskets around the pool and there they stayed all that day.

The weddings and birthday parties did not impinge on our enjoyment of the pool although I understand others had had the pool closed to them at these times. However, did feel like fish ( or whales) in a tank when party goers would appear with no notice, to stare like a freak show at us....wow! Hotel guests, what next ! Had to try and slip through the hotels grounds and foyer, damp, hot and red, with wedding guests looking stunning.
I can only imagine this hotel thrives on Wedding parties and Birthdays etc ( even though none of these people appear to stay at the hotel much as they were never there the next day ) as it felt like a ghost town at times. These parties seem to go on all day and can be until late at night ! As a hotel guest, I felt sidelined for these events...3 in 6 days ( I was sightseeing the other 3 days so could have been more!) and party guests needs priority for all staff.

The hotel in novel for it's OTT appearance....gilt, pictures of clebrities that mean nothing to me, really lovely china and cutlery but .....fur coat with no knickers if the basics fail to impress. Shame.

We stayed 1 night out of the 3 we had booked everything about the hotel was nice. But we arrived there and there was a wedding on which was fine. So we went out for the afternoon so that we were not in the way. We came back around 6.30 and the wedding was still going which we had to walk through to get to the restaurant. Which was fine but very awkward then we went to bed to live music from the wedding that shook the floor and fireworks that keeped going to 2.30 in the morning. Next day was fine and sunny so we went to Pompeii for a tour and came back to have a relaxing afternoon by the beautiful pool to find that there was another wedding on so we couldn't us the pool and would have been stuck in our room as there were guests and bridesmaids around the entrance and gardens of the hotel, overall a Nice hotel but they need to decide if there a hotel or wedding venue as there is no way they can make guests happy when there is a wedding on! as a guest we felt we had to tip toe around and were afraid to ask questions when reception staff seemed more interested in the wedding side of things, we couldn't use the grounds of the hotel as there were wedding guests every where and the hotel is not situated walking distance to any where to eat, and also couldn't get any sleep due to noise! We didn't feel comfortable and therefor we ended up leaving after 1 night and moved on to our next destination early! It's a shame that we booked when weddings were being held as we would have liked to experience this hotel when there was not a wedding!
