“Noisy Air Conditioning Unit”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2008

Called on spec to this hotel, initial impressions good, worth the out of season high room rate, we felt it was the best on offer in the area. A street back from the main street, nice quiet location, but within easy access to the beach, and restaurants. 'superior room' with spa bath only room type available. Very friendly and courteous male check-in staff member, well informed, equipped with maps of the area etc, perfect english, & well polished.

Small hotel, off street parking, reception area well maintained and gleaming, restaurant not open for dinner so we had to go out, plenty of choice for food, found lovely fish restaurant down the road, absolutely lovely.

Nice and relaxed back to the hotel for a nice spa bath and a good nights sleep. Not so. Bath must not have been in use for some time, very noisy starting up, water coming from jets was very smelly and brownish in colour - came to the conclusion that it was not clean. Quickly got out of that!!

Now for a good nights sleep. Started off well, then about 2am woken up by a continuous noise like a bathroom fan. It seemed to be all around our room, and unsure of where it was coming from it was loudest behind the wall at the headboard of our bed.....what could it be..... somebody next door left their fan on....give it a while and it will probably go off....half an hour later....noise getting worse....louder......rearranged bed to get away from the noise... no difference...tried phone to ring reception...not working...left it another short while.... no difference. 2.45am went to reception (used stairs as lifts too noisy at that time of night). Night porter on duty didnt have any english, used my french to explain the situation, he advised me to return to my room and maintenance person would call to us in 10 mins. Returned to our room and waited, and waited... no one came. 3.30am sat up and read for a while, no change in noise. 4.30am went to reception again, thinking night porter didnt understand me, he repeated my dilema so i knew he understood, and told me someone was on their way. Back to the room and waited. Noise continued. Ended up with no sleep.

Tired and exhausted, went to breakfast as soon as it opened. Checked out after one night, asked to speak to duty manager. None available. Given a reduction of €8 on room rate - not exactly thrilled with this, but very annoyed that no one bothered to help us in the middle of the night - all we wanted was to sleep. Female staff member with good english apologised for noise and said she couldnt explain what it was. However there was a huge air conditioning unit visible hanging off the wall of the room we stayed in. (3rd floor overlooking the car park at the side)Checking with her again she admitted that it had been serviced that day, and that may have been the source of the noise. Filled out a complaint and asked for follow up from duty manager, was assured this would happen. Needless to report after 6 months NO response, confirming their level of customer care - they couldnt care less. Very disappointing and unprofessional attitude of checkout staff. Felt once they got you in to pay a high out of season room rate, that they didnt care less. Having said that hotel generally well kept and nice and clean.

Not worth the money, staff indifferent, couldnt care less. Pity nice location, lovely drives in the area and walks, fab cove nearby ideal for snorkelling and a quiet few hours.

Would I return - NO WAY.

While the town might not be much to look at, it has a certain charm. Also, it is nice to get away from the overbuilt touristy parts of the coast.

Set back one street from the bay, the Hotel Porto Cristo provides a good base to explore the area and its nice beaches. While the decor is a little 'over the top'. Its colonial outside gives you little clue of the 70s interior. But saying that, our room was clean, large and very comfortable. The staff were very helpful. Breakfast is a good buffet, with some of the best breads I have had in the region.

Since the hotel's restaurant was not open during our stay, we went to the Restaurant Can Pepo, which is on the same street as the hotel, just turn left after you walk out of the hotel, it is on the other side of the street, on the next block.

The Can Pepo is a great small local place, that serves excellent grilled fish and meats. The staff was very helpful.

  • Liked — Breakfast buffet was excellent.
  • Disliked — Room decor was a little 'too much'.

Hotel Porto Cristo (hotelportocristo.com) is a beautiful hotel just behind the lovely bay of El Port de la Selva in the north east of Spain, close to the border with France. Everything in the hotel is immaculate and tasteful, and the staff are helpful. I mentioned beforehand it was my wife's birthday the night we were staying, and they put some lovely flowers and chocolates in the room with no charge (a nice touch). Breakfast was excellent, English and continental, including boiling water for tea (such joy!).
There is a great fish restaurant (Ca La Paquita) a couple of minutes walk from the hotel just beyond the square on the first floor of a building (you will see the outside stairs going up to it).

  • Liked — Immaculate, stylish and quality hotel at great value
  • Disliked — Nothing

This hotel has recently been refurbished to a high standard. The room was one the best we have stayed in, jacusi bath in superb bathroom. However the air con seemed not to be working on our second and last night, also only luke warm water was available early evening on the last night.

The restaurant had only just opened so this may be an excuse for the poor sevice and mediocre food. The waiter and waitress seemed inexperienced and exchanging barbed comments all the time
