Domacija Novak is located in a lovely building, very nicely furnished throughout. Our room was simple, but attention had been paid to the little things that really matter, such as insect screens on the windows and nice fabrics. The village, Savinja, is on a terrace above the river, on the side of the valley that catches the evening sun, with topolar barns, church bells ringing on the hills around and vegetable gardens and fruit trees around.
Dinner was memorable for all the right reasons. Miriam's cooking was brilliant - it seems simple but it is rare to find this quality and freshness of the ingredients and this accuracy of the cooking at the same time as generous portions and a rellaxed atmosphere. Two standouts for us were fresh porcini strudel and big chunks of high-quality roast pork with a delicious stuffing and real gravy. Boris is a wonderful convivial host, and really loves his wine, particularly "natural" wine, from Slovenia, Collio and Croatia. We tasted 9 or more wines during the evening, of a quality and range that we haven't been served anywhere for many years, from producers that are hard to get hold of locally and near-impossible to buy in the UK. Top quality scrambled eggs in the breakfast as well. The price was good value for the quality.
We only stayed for one night but the surrounding area has lots to offer including the beautiful Krka river (for wildlife and fishing) and huge forests. The brilliant Krizna Jama cave system is close enough for a day trip also, but you have to phone a few days ahead to get a place on their 4 hour tour.
