Years ago (2003), my family and I found Poggio Nebbia almost by accident. What a happy accident it turned out to be! We called from the road to see if they had a room available and - if yes - to get directions and Anna said, "just wait there, I am coming to get you." And she did, in the first example of what is the hallmark of Poggio Nebbia - their warmth, open arm welcome, respect for nature and willingness to go the extra mile for their guests is core to everything they do. Coming back again this year (2xs for total of 2 weeks) only amplified this impression and our love for Poggio Nebbia. What a setting! The immaculate lodging and grounds are situated on the top of a hill surrounded by vineyards, olive trees and golden wheat fields that stretch as far as your eye can see. The standards for cleanliness and quality are very high - they don't miss a beat. Sunrises, sunsets and night skies are jaw droppingly beautiful. This is a place you come to when you want to recharge your batteries and connect to the natural and astounding beauty of the Maremma. We did. We visited a wonderful little beach (10 minute drive) at Anna's suggestion and loved it so much that we went back three days in a row. We could have been on a remote beach in Portugal, it was so secluded. Rome is just an hour or so by train from either Tarquinia or Civitavecchia - easy enough although the last train leaves Rome around midnight so you will want to give yourself enough time to make it.
The meals are wonderful for so many reasons. The food is all prepared from scratch and is grown or raised on the farm. My nieces spent a morning making homemade pasta rolled by hand with Sabrina (Anna's sister who is in charge of the well-stocked kitchen) - they had a blast and learned so much. BTW- The jams are wonderful - we ended up shipping jams and olive oil home avoiding the hassle and weight in our suitcases.
The best part of Poggio Nebbia however is something that is very hard to find these days- being welcomed as part of the extended and interesting community of staff, guests, friends and family. We have made friends with them all - too many to name here. We are already planning a return trip next year and can't wait.
