Well worth the journey Sunday lunch at Arroyo Hondo October 2012
To spread ones wings beyond the normal range of favoured local eating houses, the temptation has to be compelling, consistent, and memorable, the welcome has to be warm, and the anticipation of the delights to come should make you salivate.
But don’t go if what you want, is budget food, fast food, mediocrity, or don’t like twisty roads, or are afraid of heights!
About 30 minutes drive to the west of Marbella and north of Estapona, some 5 km.
before the pretty village of Caseres, lies Arroyo Hondo, a restaurant that ticks all the boxes. Two special people have run this establishment for as long as I can remember.
The Chef/Patron Chris Robinson-Burrell, and his charming wife Noriko who rules the front of house. The pleasant rural patio seat about 30, with a further 50 inside. The staff are
amiable without being intrusive
There is a special Sunday lunch menu, and some of the10 starters show a distinct influence of Noriko like the Chicken Karaage Japanese deep fried chicken marinated in garlic & soya sauce and served with a Wasabi mayonnaise and a sweet Teriyaka glaze
(8€), or Beef Tataki which is seared Fillet of beef, soy, dashi & rice wine dressing and
A soy marshmallow (10.50€) or roasted Quail Tian with mango & pomegranate and a lentil And roasted pepper vinaigrette (8.50€)
To follow, pick from one of the 4 traditional roasts of Beef, Lamb, or Pork, with a small twist for the Beef option of either rib eye or fillet (from 14- 22€) – or 9 other mains that include a vegetarian, a duck, 3 fish and a further 4 meet dishes.
The 8 deserts are no less interesting, and includes some old favourites such as Rhubarb & custard tart, Bread and butter pudding, Baked vanilla cheesecake with a mixed berry compote (all at 6.50€) and a cheese platter with Tomato chutney for those of us that don’t have a sweet tooth.(8€) The house wines are 12€, but if your having the rose, for only 2€ more, try the Muga
