“Really lovely”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013

We stayed at Oystercatcher Haven for 5 nights on our latest trip to South Africa. Anja, Wayne, Sandy and Claudia have fine tuned this operation to provide a very relaxing location. Fabulous location with amazing views onto the beach - so close to the sea that initially it was almost too noisy until we acclimatised - but we certainly did. Friendly, helpful and attentive with really good breakfasts. Its not trendy but do not in any way be put off by the eclectic, even quirky decor and furnishings. We started our stay in the newly converted Room 4 on the ground floor and were then moved to the suite on the upper floor for our last 2 nights. Both different, both really nice. Restaurant bookings had been made by Anja and we juggled these a bit as we got used to what was on offer in Paternoster - Voorstrand once, Noisy Oyster and Gaaitjie Salt Water twice each. Lots of great fish and shellfish - really fresh and in very interesting surroundings with lots of friendly fellow guests and a bit of a party atmosphere. We liked Wayne's artwork and were really envious of the fantastic guest house that he and Sandy have created over the past 13 years. Took lots of interesting trips out ( Wayne full of useful advise) and saw lots of wildflowers and nature along this beautiful stretch of the coast. We stayed exactly 10 years to the day that Madiba and his wife had a 4 night break at the Oystercatcher Haven - we understood why he was apparently so reluctant to leave!! Take a detour from Capetown, its not that far and really worth it!!

Paternoster is very unique and you should visit if you are in the area. The place with the most B&B's in a very small area, but still very peaceful.
The view from the B&B is beautiful. You look out over the ocean/beach from your room and about everywhere in the hotel.
Don't expect a pool to swim in. Very small and basically just a plunge pool to cool down, but all the pools we saw was like that.
The breakfast was Ok. The hosts are very attentive and kind.
We were not blown away by the rooms. Different but not as luxurious as one might expect for the price.
A few restaurants in town and really good food at all the ones we tried. Not all the restaurants are open in the week during the off seasons so make sure you plan accordingly.
Paternoter is a great place to relax and recharge your batteries.

This place, a typical example of South African seaside chic (ie expensively rustic), is in a great location, and makes a lovely romantic break - if you can afford it. The sea, as everyone notes, is right outside your window, and (when the sun comes out), the waves are just mesmerising to watch. You can walk straight out on to the beach as well. Breakfast was good. We were advised not to walk into Paternoster itself for dinner - providing yet another reminder of the tensions and inequalities in South African life. The 'swimming pool' is just a small plunge pool on the terrace.

We spent 4 nights here at the end of a 6 week tour of South Africa, and could not have had a more relaxing time. The house itself is in a stunning position overlooking the ocean, with a wide sandy beach a few steps down the dunes from the house ,We stayed in Room 1 on the ground floor, and it was a bit of a shock when we first saw the room with its very eclectic decor and furnishings. However first impressions are not always to be trusted and we can honestly say we had the best stay here. We had our own private entrance from a lovely little sun terrace, where we had a delicious breakfast served by either Wayne or Claudia each day, and the view from the guesthouse is simply spectacular and good for the soul. Just round the corner from our terrace was a little area that we could sunbathe in, and it was perfect. The dining options in Paternoster are a little limited, especially on a weekend, but by this stage we were more than happy to dine at the Voorstrand cafe slap bang on the beach where the food was fresh and beautifully cooked and presented. We strolled along the beach more often than not accompanied by Wayne and Sandy's three dogs and at the end of each day, we slept like logs, with the windows open, a sea breeze blowing in, and the crashing waves lulling us to sleep. A perfect end to a hectic holiday and we felt refreshed and relaxed when we sadly left.

An easy drive from Capetown stopping at great farmstalls on the way, Paternoster is a treat for the senses. Whitewashed cottages, no ugly advertising or development, peaceful clean beaches, a nature drive nearby, great food at several restaurants, and the lovely Oystercatchers Haven B&B. When the wind blows, stay inside and be cool (or warm in winter), enjoy the well chosen African memorabilia collected by the hosts on their travels. When the sun shines, explore the beaches and have a quick bracing dip. The apartments are beautifully furnished - downstairs is handy, upstairs is peaceful and spacious. Breakfasts are delicious, nutritious and filling. The hosts are welcoming and kind - nothing was too much trouble, they looked after us wonderfully. Take a book and relax and swim, or explore. Chill and enjoy! Madiba did!

We stayed in room 3, a luxury suite with an uninterrupted birds eye view over the sea below. The feeling of being so close to nature can't be beat! No surprise then that Mandela chose this spot for a 2003 getaway. Wayne and Sandy are also very friendly hosts, who will do things like booking you into the best restaurants to ensure you enjoy your stay in Paternoster.

Our one reservation regards the wind. This spot is located in the windier part of town and room 3 is located in the roof where the wind tugs and tugs and tugs, creating quite a lot of noise. Perhaps rooms 1 and 2 are better bets if one is a light sleeper.
