“Lovely location and excellent staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2013

My husband and I have just returned from a weeks stay at this hotel. The wonderful friendly staff really make your stay memorable. Everywhere is very clean, and food good.
The hotel is in a lovely location right on the sea front in the quiet village of Santa Cruz which has an interesting daily market, and lovely old church, Great walk along the flat promenade with good views across to the island of Porto Santo. A courtesy minibus runs from the hotel three times a day to take you on the 30 minute journey to the sea front at Funchal.
Outdoor pool is unheated and small indoor pool costs an extra 11 euro's each per day if you want to use it but this is in the "spa" with a gym, steam room and jacuzzi as well.

Room Tip: Pay a little extra to get a room with a sea view.

I feel a bit harsh giving this hotel only three blobs (balls?) because it was the free overnight stay organised by our airline when our flight had been cancelled due to strong cross-winds. So I am grateful for being given a room at short notice. And it certainly wasn't terrible by any means.

But... if I had been staying here on my own money, I would have been a little disappointed in the room. Superficially it looked quite nice: the bathroom had a cool black stone sink and the interior design was modern and stylish. But there was a soggy patch in the carpet where rain water had leaked through the glass sliding windows and it felt like there was some kind of protective plastic sheet under the cotton bedsheets. The pillows were a bit lumpy.

Breakfast was pretty good and the outdoor pool looked great (not that I had the opportunity to use it in the short time I was in the hotel). The restaurant area is spacious, looks great and has some really quite lovely artwork on its walls. There isn't WiFi (free or otherwise) in the bedrooms; I'm not sure about the public areas.

The hotel provided a travel cot for our 2-year-old, which was fine. You can see this in the photo I have included with this review.

Just returned from a week's holiday on an all inclusive basis. This hotel is clean, friendly customer focused staff. Food is nutritious and varied. Curtesy bus service three times a day to Funchal. Hotel graded 4 star but some 5 star do not provide such customer focus and versatility among staff. Would also be very suitable for the business traveller. We will look forward to our stay there for our next holiday in Madeira.

We've just had a great week of winter sun at this ultra modern hotel. We were really pleased with everything about the hotel and paying the extra to upgrade to a sea view was well worth it. There was no buffet for lunch due to under occupancy at the hotel. Instead, a 3 course menu with plenty of choice was provided. The waiters were always attentive and keen to see that we had everything we needed. Nothing was too much trouble.
The only downside was the charge to use the indoor pool. On an all inclusive basis it's a pity that this in not available without a charge. To use all the other spa facilities I would have paid the extra, but not just to use the pool. The free bus service to Funchal is a real bonus.

Room Tip: Choose sea view if you don't want to look at the street. However it's not a busy place traff...

We have just returned from 14 days at Villa Gale, firstly I must say two things, the hotel is very clean and the staff are superb, that also includes the rep (Adrian!!). However that is all one can say as a plus to this hotel Firstly we though that we had booked through Tompson as we booked in very early October to enable us to fly on New Years Eve, and in so booking we would have a pool or sea view room, alas no so, it was with First Choice!!! This was the fault without doubt of Tompson, who even after contacting the head office would not confirm this was the case. Must give more thought as to a future tour operator. The room we had, initsleft was Ok although not as we requested.
Now to the hotel it'self, as already stated it was clean and the staff superb, but the food, apart from breakfast, was very poor, almost like school dinners, and that for my wife and myself was some years ago. It was in the main edible, but no real choice at all. Twice there was nothing that I liked so after complaining I did get something else.
After paying for all inclusive in most hotels world wide, we have had that, and while the First Choice brochure does say the extras have to be paid for, in this type of hotel you should not and the fact it is winter the heated pool should have been allowed at least. It was a quiet hotel, very quiet, it also states in the brochure that entertainment would be on selected nights, we had none although we had missed a half hour period when a bird was flying around !! They had a bar area called the Soul & Blues bar, well there was NO soul and it gave you the blues.
Apart from all these negative points, we had a fair holiday the sun did come out for the 2nd week and the village of Santa Cruz was a quiet place and quite nice.
A final point, the aircraft was no trouble at all, and the hotel did provide two free services, no fee for the safe, and free transport, although only three times a day.
Simply - beware of Tompson's sales pitch, look for a better deal elseware.

Room Tip: Book with another tour operator

I booked an all inclusive holiday at this hotel from Christmas Eve till New Years Eve. The hotel itself was no problem. The rooms were large enough, clean and well appointed. Public areas were also very clean and staff both chambermaids, waiters and bar staff were all pleasant and helpful. The close proximity to the airport did not in any way spoil my stay here in fact I enjoyed watching the comings and goings of the aircraft.
However a big minus for this hotel was the quality and choice of the food offered at lunch and dinner ( breakfast was the best meal of the day). Unlike other reviewers who seem easily pleased I did expect to be served seasonal fare on Christmas Day so was extremely disappointed to find a pork chop or some fish in some sauce were the only offerings on that lunch time!! Presumably a number of guests complained as the rep announced a special dinner for us on the Saturday evening and guests should come smartly casual. It was so special all the other 400 guests who were not with First Choice were offered the same meal (which could not be described as special in any way). However we (first Choice guests) did have a paper Christmas Rose decoration on our tables (yum yum)!!! Since the hotel was some distance out of Funchal the availability of a shuttle bus was an added attraction when booking this holiday. Unfortunately this only ran 2 or 3 times a day and if not booked well in advance there was no chance of a trip into Funchal. The cost of one week all inclusive was £800 which is not a small sum and I would expect better than 2 star meals for that price. Would I recommend this hotel? I have to say because of the meals quality I would have to say I would not

We choose this hotel after reading the reviews here on TA. We had a junior suite/family room with a seaview and a seperate livingroom/bedroom. We stayed for 7 days with all inclusive and had the pleasure to experience the funchal fireworks. Our expectation for the hotel was_

- Buffet style meals with average quality and variation
- A modern Hotel with a huge variation of sericelevel on staff
- close to the airport in every ways, noice etc

Food and drinks
The quality of the food was ok, and the grill is acually very good. The buffet could have had some more variation, but all in all it was ok, and to our expectaion. The staff varmed up during the week, and a little tip goes a long way. The quility of the wine in the AI is not high, so I went for beer and madeira wine. The bar served a daily coctail and spirits and mixer. Service was good, but not great.

The hotel
Is very clean and fit our style. There is still a crack in the front entrance, but othervise is the hotel well kept. They could clean the diningroom between dinner and breakfast, as we have a child that puts most of his food on the floor and not in the mouth. There is a great variation of the servicelevel of the staff, from ok to great.

The grounds and surrounding
Very nice seafront and gardens. Very cold pool, but the inside pool is ok. Pay the 7 days accessfee, and it is ok value. The planes are noisy, but it is ok.

Room Tip: Our room was a junior suite, 3010, and the hotel has 4 of these. Choose these if you are traveling w...
