“Bavarian mountains with British castle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

For a weekend of relax we choose "DasKranzbach". We knew the "castle" that was built upon request of Mary Portman a British aristocrat, from early days of our childhood. The place is still magic: without any nuisance aroud, it is on a private street in a valley that only leeds to another Spa hotel. You really can enjoy nature. A very large and well equipped Spa with several saunas overlooking the Karwendel and other mountains! We adored the interior design of the portman house, the old part. There is a new extension to the castle with a more scandinavian style. Food was very good. The one little negative point is the eating room itself: far too noisy and too busy for a hotel that sells tranquility, relaxation and silence.

Room Tip: We did prefer the room in the Mary portman house but the new part seems even better

An opportunity to relive childhood memories is always a special opportunity, especially when it brings you back to our magical mountain valley! The advantage and disadvantage of Kranzbach is that there is so much space to relax during the day that the hotel feels very calm, therefore when people come together to eat the presence of others is exaggerated. We look forward to seeing you soon, best wishes from the whole Kranzbach team.

I have visited Kranzbach alone and with my husband in Winter and Spring both times I was in awe of it's beauty inside and surrounding as well as the food and service. A must see if you are in Munich or are traveling to/from Italy or even better visit Innsbruck before or after. Working in the boutique hotel sector for a decade I experienced many unique hotels but Das Kranzbach certainly is my favorite of all! Go and experience for yourself!

I have been coming to the nearby hotel Schloss Elmau for the past forty years and I just cannot get enough of the area. On our way back from Italy we called in at Kranzback to see if there was a room available for a couple of days. We had never stayed at this hotel before. We absolutely loved the whole experience. The room was lovely (maybe the brown colour of the chairs and curtains was not quite to my taste), the sauna and swimming pool just amazing and the food delicious. I read that the restaurant was designed to give the quests flexibility but the restaurant was the one area we did not like about the hotel. You really felt you were sitting in a big canteen. The restaurant manager Daniela seemed to been in sole charge of the seating that is you sat where you are told to sit and there was no flexibility. All in all if you were not liked by Daniela you were sat in just about the worst seat in the restaurant. For this kind of hotel that is really not good enough and it did spoil our evening meal experience. All other staff were kind and most helpful.

You are absolutely right, the natural beauty of the area is stunning. It is for this reason, that we have large panoramic windows in the restaurant so that you always have the pleasure of enjoying the view. In the evening, we allow guests to reserve their table, which enables them to choose where they feel comfortable. For this system to function properly we must therefore place guests who have not booked on an available table. All our staff are trained to provide you with the best service and help you enjoy your stay. I recommend that on your next visit you speak to the Restaurant manager and reserve a table of your choice.

I have never stayed in a better Spa hotel in the world - and I've stayed in a few I can assure you!
We were in a fabulous deluxe Double room, 327, with a view to die for towards the mountains. Wonderful bed, spacious bathroom, balcony, everything was perfect.
The spa wing is huge and has a number of saunas, pools, treatment rooms and outside lounges on the huge expanse of grassland.
The food was fantastic and included in the price.
The interior in the bar area was apparently designed by the same woman who did Babington House in the UK.
The staff were outstanding throughout the whole establishment. Particular mention here for Florian our waiter who was superb and also Agnes - both had a great personalities and were very good at their jobs.
We went for a very long walk (seven hours in total) via Wetterstein to Konig Ludwig House at Schachen which was pretty tough but worth it for the great scenery.
The only tiny drawback was that all the signs etc were in German so you can feel a bit lost if you don't speak the language but all the staff speak English so that's ok.
If you are anywhere near Munich, Garmish or Innsbruck please go and have a look at this wonderful hotel - it is really something else.

Room Tip: Try the new wing on the third floor.

Thank you very much for the kind words, we are pleased you enjoyed your stay. Well done for making it up to Schachen Haus, the physical exertion is rewarded splendidly by the impressive house and view! The interior design of the Mary Portman House was created by Ilse Crawford from Studio Ilse in London, we think she has certainly done Mary proud. Quality of service is the most important characteristic for us at Das Kranzbach and we will pass on your compliments to our staff. We look forward to seeing you again in Das Kranzbach, Warm Regards

This was an unexpected treat. Not only very accessible from Munich but accessible to the most stunning scenery in southern Bavaria. The staff were super and we stayed in the Mary Portman wing which has been beautifully styled to complement the Arts and Crafts period. The Spa was luxurious and every single detail taken care of like lots of fresh towels and refreshments on hand. The games room in the older part of the hotel was a lovely quirky touch..all together a wonderful restful experience. Would recommend 100%.

Room Tip: The older building is fabulous but would recommend you chose a view to the front of the building.

We had 2 nights with friends in the Kranzbach. Our reservation was for 2 rooms with panoramic view in the ' Gardenwing', we had room no. 518, very good choice! A terrace and bathroom window with an outstanding view towards the forest and mountain. A good size modern room.

Our friends had No. 516 but were not able to check in at 2pm as the room was not ready. We decided on a late light lunch to shorten the waiting time, it was beautiful weather and sitting outside would have been perfect.
The Hotel reminded us as not all were checked-in we could only use the Bar.
That is the point we disliked, the service was very different depend on person. Some were friendly and helpful, other seem to have forgotten how to smile and deliver a service.
The halfboard offered a good choice of different dishes including ' local specialities' and the breakfast buffet had coldcuts, cereals, cheese and freshly prepared eggs.
The wellness offered a big outdoor pool and 2 hot ( 36degrees) pool for relaxing as well as plenty of other options inside. As we had one rainy day, swimming outside was mystical.
Conclusion: Good place to stay for a few days, spending more money on the panoramic room was worth it. Please improve the service !

Room Tip: Panoramic view rooms with Terrace @ 49qm

We are pleased you recommended our new Panorama rooms and enjoyed a mystical swim in our pool. We truly believe that Kranzbach provides a memorable experience whatever the weather conditions. The hotel informs each guest personally on their confirmation email, what time the room is available, after which guests can enjoy full use of the facilities. For us the guest is always the number one priority and we continually strive to improve the service and the experience to ensure that you can relax and recuperate during your stay.

I was in the area and thought I'd check this out for a day or two. When I booked my room, I chose the new wood-paneled section, as the picture showed a great view. HA! Single rooms in the new area are indeed, as reviewer skifan commented, cell-like, overlooking parked cars and the side of the stone building. It reminded me of a youth hostel. Opening the door to my room, I thought there must be some mistake, and I wanted to cry, having just left the spacious glory of Schloss Elmau. Lots of clutter on the table, trying to sell me stuff, and the mini-bar filled with pricey items, (no daily allotment of toblerone and gummy bears here!) OK - I had to stop the comparison game, or I knew my stay would be miserable. Still - the room had only a small lotion and shampoo - that's it. No replacement the next day, either. The special spa basket contained: a robe and slippers. Period. Whatever. The food was good, if a little salty. The sauna area is top notch, with spectacular views. I liked the flavorings presented alongside the mineral water in the pool/sauna area. I also like being greeted with a glass of sekt. I was shocked that they won't shuttle you to the train - 3 KM - so I had to hire a taxi for 13 euros not including tip. (I didn't have to pay to get there, as I was transferring from Schloss Elmau, and they provide transportation, including bringing me here, and carrying my super-heavy bag up the steps, while the Kransbach staff watched. Wow.) Anyway, if you like the bustle of a busy dining area, with spectacular mountain views during breakfast, it is great. This place has a lot going for it, and many people staying here were thrilled. I just prefer a different atmoshpere.

Room Tip: If you want a nice room, you must book a panorama double or something. Single rooms are not a good v...

We are pleased that you enjoyed our inclusive, ‘well-being’ pampering service during your stay, however when you compare 5* Superior service to 4* Superior service there will always be certain things that you miss. I apologise if your shampoo and lotion bottles were not replaced, the room maid should replace these on a daily basis. We are deeply disappointed that your room was not to your liking, we have designed these rooms for guests that, like yourself travel alone and do not want to pay the normal single person room surcharge. We clearly state on the website the room layout and size, and provide a picture gallery so that you can choose the room best suited to you.

As the leading Spa hotel in Germany, we pride ourselves on Wellness, we are delighted that during your stay you were able to enjoy the stunning mountain views whilst relaxing in our saunas. Due to the close proximity of the station, we do not currently have a shuttle service, however it is being considered for future guests. Thank you for your room suggestions, we agree that our new Panorama and Deluxe doubles provide guests with a perfect combination of space, comfort and spectacular views.
