“Great Location, Wonderful Stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2009

We spent 10 nights at the Vaka Villa. It is the oldest, more traditional one of the three villas. Not a luxury, but very nice. It is very spacious, clean, has all the necessary comforts of a home. The villa is located right on the beach, with deck stairs going straight to the sand. The villa has three bedrooms (only one has A/c), two bathrooms and large living room and kitchen. Laundry facility and carports. The cleaning lady comes three times a week to change sheets/towels, vacuum and tidy a little. No major cleaning service. There are beach towels available, as well as masks, snorkels, some sizes fins and reef shoes.

It is located in the village of Titikaveka with few stores close by as well as fresh fruits and veggies stand on a walking distance. There is a botanical garden/cafe near by as well as few choices for dinner. The beach was almost always empty with us being the only inhabitants. Great snorkeling right off the beach - plenty of colorful fish, turtles and sea cucumbers. We enjoyed the freedom of going out or doing a BBQ as well as having breakfast while watching the kids play in the water.

The other two villas look much newer and even nicer, but more exposed to the sun during the day.

Overall, excellent experience. Enjoyed every minute of it!

Our family stayed at Sands Villas for 3 nights and wished they had been available for longer.
There are only 3 villas here - all with lagoon views and two right on the edge of the whitest baech you ever saw!
The villa set back a little still has sea views and more shelter and privacy from beach strollers.
So it actually suited us better.

The villas have 3 bedrooms , 2 bathrooms and all we needed for a 1st class holiday .
The magnificent kitchen and lounge are better than mine at home!
The staff here are really friendly and helpful and they did a great cleaning job - something we appreciated with kids in tow.

The beach is out of this world!
white white white and the lagoon deep at all tides (unlike most Raro lagoons) and a magnificent snorkeling reserve.
Lots and lots of fish - anf its all safe for kids !
Thec other guests in the other villas were alla dults travelloinmg fior aswedding and the complex is of the size atht you all tend to gret to know weach othyer.
great fun but private when you want paece and quiet.
This is for those wanting a classy beach holiday without paying the earth.
You will love "Mama Ina" , the grandma who lives in a cottage on site and calls herself the "security officer"

5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2007

We spent 7 wonderful days in April 2007 at the Sands Villas in Rarotonga with our family of 5 including children aged 4, 6 and 13. Having spent much time debating whether it was better or worse than the Rarotonga Beach Bungalows (which have a kids club), we opted for the Sands Villas as it was right on the beach and that is, after all, why we all visit the Cook islands.

We could not have chosen a better place!

Location: Titikaveka beach is on the south of the island which has some of the best snorkelling. The beach is deserted with beautiful white sand, the water is gin clear with lots of fish. There is still sunshine on the beach at 5 pm and the area is beautiful, surrounded by palms and flowers.

There is good access via busses into town and a restaurant within walking distance (though it needs booking). There is also a small grocery shop nearby and a fruit & veg stall.

Villa: There are 3 villas all with 3 bedrooms. We stayed at the Vaka villa which has one large onsuite bedroom with view and private access to the beach, it also has another double and a twin bedroom (the latter has air con) with another bathroom with a jaccuzi type bath & separate shower. There is a washing machine, dish washer, kettle, BBQ & microwave, stereo etc so you have everything you need for a family of 5 or 6. It also has snorkelling gear for many sizes (though not for very small children) and canoes.

Negative points: Hardly to find, but if I had to point out flaws, it would be that the villa was cleaned only twice during our stay (but we had fresh towels every other day) and that the bins were not emptied often enough. However if you leave them outside, someone will collect them.

Other:
We actually got married on the beach right outside the villa underneath a beautiful archway that "Mama" made for us. It was the best location, the most relaxing holiday and a truly memorable trip for us and our children. We also received fruit & bread when we arrived, had some washing powder given to us free and the whole reception was really warm.

Summary:
Many hotels are geared for couples only and not children on Raro which is why I would highly recommend the Sands villas for anyone coming with kids. They can make as much noise as they want to. You can make dinner and watch them in the sea at the same time and it's cheaper than the Raro Beach Bungalows where all the family units are older in style and by the pool rather than on the beachfront. For us it was a 10/10 holiday and I'd recommend them to anyone!

  • Disliked — Nothing really though the bins could do with emptying more often.
