“My paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2013

Its paradise. The Moana Sands Hotel is the only place I would stay on the island. If you want something fancy bars, pools and lots of activities it's not the place to stay but if you want a peaceful relaxing hotel this is the place for you. The staff are so lovely and ready to help you with what ever you need. Moana Sands has the best beach on the Island i think . The most beautiful spot.
Thank you to the staff for making our holiday so a wonderful. We will be back

Room Tip: Ground Floor, walk straight out the door on the sand and into beautiful clear seas

The best location in Rarotonga. We loved being able to walk straight out from our room (101) onto the beach and into primo snorkelling water. The hotel also had free snorkelling gear and kayaks available.
I've seen a few reviews complaining about the lack of variety with the continental breakfast but for me it was a great breakfast - toast, fruit, cereal, yoghurt, coffee.

The room is a little dated but for us, the only thing which would really improve it is a fan in the bathroom. The location is just amazing and by far makes up for any dated interior.
Not that it bothered us, but the room wasn't cleaned on the Sunday when we were there - I realise this might be an issue for some which is why I mention it.

We got married on the beach here while we were staying and couldn't have asked for a more perfect day.

The Sands restaurant which is attached is one of the best on the island.

Room Tip: 101 is the best room - direct access to the beach and at the far end so not much foot traffic

We stayed here ( moans sands hotel) for 7 nights on our way between New Zealand and USA, we were very excited for a week to relax in paradise, unfortunatley this was not the case.

When we got there just before midnight we checked in and got shown to our room. The bed sheets felt really dirty and a bit greasy, the sheets, pillow cases and towels were all grubby and the whole room was just a dissapointment. The only good thing was the view which was amazing.

The breakfast 'buffet' was poor with some drab looking fruit, a few loafs of bread for toast, 4 different varietys of cerial and some coffee. We were informed on the 2nd day that the restaurant would be closed as there were under 6 rooms so we had 'breakfast' delivered on a tray the afternoon before! This was 2 bits of bread, a carton of juice and milk and a bowl of cerial we didnt even get to choose! Very dissapointed!!

All you had in the kitchen was an electric frying pan and a microwave so you really need to eat out or have an imaginative cooking mind!

We ate at 'the sands' restaurant once in the evening which was amazing.

The nearest shop is a 10 min walk which was limited and the next shop was 1hr walk away so you should most definatley hire a car/scooter!

Very dissapointed with the whole experience and couldnt wait to leave which completley wasnt what we wanted from the cook islands. Would go back to Rarotonga but not to Moana Sands!

This was our 6th visit to Raro and our 2nd staying at Moana Sands and unfortunately we will not be staying there again. The standards are only 1 step better than a back packers with a 3 star price. The beach location is outstanding, the bathrooms are so dated, shower curtains and no mixers, breakfast very poor with teaspoons standing up in condiment jars, our welcome was very poor and we did not receive our welcome drink, our black pearl and also no-one seemed to know about our complementary vouchers. Our milk and coffee was not replenished, we had to ask. Unfortunatly there is more but will send direct to hotel

I stopped at the Moana Sands Hotel for 7 nights in March 2013 in a twin room.

Summary
This 17 room hotel is located on a white sandy beach in a quiet and peaceful area of the island. With limited facilities it is an ideal place to relax on what feels like a private beach with excellent snorkelling facilities just meters from your spacious and fully equipt room.

This review is based on my stay in room 205 which is on the 1st floor.

The rooms amenities include: kitchenette- microwave, electric frying pan, toaster, crockery, cutlery, tea & coffee making facilities with a kettle, fridge. Hairdryer, iron & board, air conditioning, flat screen TV (just 3 channels) and patio for the ground floor and private balcony for the 1st & 2nd floor, each room has great rooms of the beach and ocean.

Hotel amenities include:- complimentry snorkelling equipment and kayaks, complimentry use of beach towels, BBQ area, housekeeping service 6 days a week (no sunday service), independant restaurant, internet access (NZ$15 - £7.10), the lobby is a wifi hotspot but you need to purchase a pre paid card.

Located on Rarotonga’s stunning southern coast at Titikaveka and enjoys a prime location on the shores of a long stretch of idylic white sand beach. Which in my opinion is the nicest beach on that side of the island. The hotel overlooks the crystal clear lagoon, with great snorkeling just a few steps away from your hotel room it’s the perfect spot to swim, snorkel or kayak.

The hotel is quite isolated with only 1 or 2 restaurants and a shop within walking distance from however the Island bus stops right outside the hotel every 30 minutes and costs $4 one way or $7 return and is the best value tour on the entire island, as it will take you right round the island.

My room (205) was on the second floor and was spacious, but could do with a bit of a freshen up especially the bathroom which looked a bit dated. The bed was comfortable with a sheet and a thin bedspread. The kitchenette is small but quite workable with a bit of inventive cookery. If I had one complaint about the room, in the 7 nights I stopped there the room was cleaned only 3 or 4 times. Easter fell whilst I was there and so on Good Friday wasn't cleaned, on Sunday's there is no housekeeping and for some reason my room was missed during the week, which left my room quite dirty, I would have given anything to be able to sweep and mop the floor myself, as no matter how careful you are when you are stopping in a hotel which is on the beach sand always finds it's way in.

Breakfast is included in the room rate and is billed as a Tropical Breakfast, but don't expect too much, as the breakfast is a bit basic, but acceptable. A choice of Tea, Coffee and fruit juice, toast with preserves and spreads, fruit salad, yoghurt and a choice of cereals. Cooked breakfasts are available at extra costs.

All being said, I would stop at this hotel again.

Room Tip: The ground floor rooms open out right on to the beach, but if there is a marquee up for a function o...

My husband and I stayed here in January 2013, it being our second trip to Raro. The beach and location of Moana Sands is amazing, it's like your own private beach. We had a ground room, perfect to just step out on to the sand. The room was tidy and cleaned really well, the only thing we didn't like we're the bathrooms they were quite old, didn't like the shower or tiles at all. We thought that even though this hotel was in need of some work to freshen it up, the amazing beach and private location made it awesome for us. We found snorkelling here much better than down at Muri Beach, the fish were amazing and all around you as soon as you step into the water. Staff were friendly and helpful, James in reception was awesome. There is a restaurant attached, it was ok but have been to many better ones on the island. The breakfast was very average, but I guess you'd expect that for a contential breakfast included in the price of accommodation. Two things we found were that people that were not guests at Moana Sands were there quite a bit visiting friends who were staying there as they were getting married. We were bombarded with noisy kids and all their family who used all the gear and pretty much took over on several occasions this wasn't peaceful. So it should be for guests only. Also, on a few of the days we were woken early, at around 7am or earlier to the cleaners sweeping outside the doors, this was very annoying. (This is why I'm saying average rating for sleep quality, and there was also a loud fridge humming sometimes in the room and those noisy friends of the guests especially the kids woke us early). Over all we had an awesome time in Raro and loved this part of the beach. When those other people were not there it was bliss sitting outside on the patio reading and looking out to the lagoon. The location alone would make us stay there again.

Room Tip: Ground units are great to run out and have a swim being only metres from the lagoon.

We spent 7 nights here and loved it. We had an upstairs room which was very large with everything that you would need, including a nice galley area for cooking if required. It was spotlessly clean, clean towels every day including beach towels. Free use of canoe and mask and snorkel. Bus stop right outside the door. We had tropical breakfast included in the stay which was excellent. Staff really helpful and pleasant. Lovely restaurant on the beach. Would recommend to anyone.

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms are large with balcony facing lagoon. Downstairs opens straight out onto the beach.
