“One of the best lagoon areas - quiet and relaxing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2014

Honeymooners who stayed at Royale Takitumu from the 24th to the 27th of March 2014. Would have stayed longer. We found that the lagoon here was better than the lagoon near our Aitutaki accommodation.

We travelled around the area of Rarotonga and found that the lagoon outside of the Royale Takitumu was one of the best as the beach was sand rather than crushed up coral and rocks, and you had the option to have enough area to swim or to snorkle (some other areas had either no snorkelling, or too much reef to swim safely). Mii was amazing as she was educative and helpful with our stay. She had upgraded us from the garden villa to the lagoon view villa, we also had an upgrade with airport transfers. I would recommend the lagoon view villas - you may not be on the beach front, but you definately feel it as your patio area over looks the lagoon. I appreciated the finer details that made staying here enjoyable and comfortable. These finer details proved that the place was well maintained. Eg. Daily cleaning, beach side hammocks were clean, sun beds had clean cushions & didn't look worn, kayaks weren't sun damaged. Peace & quiet in the area. Minimal people. Large Open Villas with included spa if you get the lagoon view. Walk out into one of the best areas of the lagoon. Enjoyed the complimentary wine by the beach.

If you are looking for a more commercial accommodation with a Spa, Gym and restaurant, then this may not be the place for you.

Best parts: Cleanliness, great bed, well maintained, lagoon area for swimming and snorkling. PRIVACY as you have your own villa which is broken up between beautiful ponds and gardens. Hammocks tied between two palm trees over looking the lagoon. The lagoon was still full at low tide to swim. Did not draw to far out like some other areas.

Note: Some amenities weren't available - No restaurant or bar, but Mii organised transfers to any restaurants that we wanted to go to which did not cost us any thing additional. We hired a scooter for our own transport during the day. While there was no option for b.fast, the fridge was stocked with some fruit, bread, milk, juice & jam which lasted the 3nights.

Thanks Mii you were a charm. xox.

Room Tip: I would definately consider the lagoon view villas. We originally booked the garden view but were up...

5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2014 via mobile

We stayed 11 - 16 March 2014 for our honeymoon.
We enjoyed staying here because it is far less commercial and is fresh and newish and not tired like a lot of the other places we called into. If your after a Resort type place to stay this isn't it. We loved the fact the accommodation is separate villas rather than rooms lined up in a row and that we went out a lot to enjoy different cafés and restaurant around the island. The thatched roofs make the units very Island like. The gardens and pathways are lovely. We had what I think was the most standard room and while we weren't on the beach front it was very close and still had its own hammock and deck area. The snorkelling is amazing right out the front, lots of fish to see.
Mii, Mii is a delight, she met us the minute we walked up the front steps by our names and sat us down and went over things, even had a list of recommended restaurants and activities. Mii made our bookings and arranged the beach front tables. Nothing was a problem and I'm sure she ran around in her own time sorting my washing out!
So overall we thought this place was great, a few tiny little picky things but nothing enough to knock it from a five to a four! I say pay the little but extra for this place and stay someone that is beautiful and has the great service of Mii. Thanks Mii. Alicia & Elton

Friendly, attentive staff lead by Mii, the ultimate hostess-manager. We enjoyed the Petanque and Champagne get-together within hours of our arrival to meet the other guests but also appreciated the privacy our resort offered. All amenities ie. kayaks, beach lounge chairs, snorkel gear were readily available. Sea-view or beachfront villas would recommend if within your means but garden suite met our needs. Beach and coral reef outstanding, snorkelling fun. Fruit platter most appreciated on arrival.Recommendations always spot-on by Mii and other guests. BBQ area and grounds well maintained. Titikaveka Christian Church congregation welcomed us as guests for a delicious buffet lunch following an inspirational service with gospel singing giving us a true sense of the Cook Islands spirit. Rent a scooter or small car if staying more than a few days. Would love to return to this island paradise one day.

Room Tip: Request beachfront or seaview if within your means.

I can think of many superlatives to describe this place, but I think I’ll simply say Wonderful. The people are as nice as you would ever want to meet, the beach is 2nd to none, and the bungalows are very comfortable. If I had to give a negative, it would be I did not stay long enough (only 6 days). If your goal is to relax and enjoy the peace and quite this is the place. My next trip will be for two weeks.

Room Tip: Lagoon View bungalow was nice, consider the extra money for a beach front bungalow.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2014

We just got back from 12 nights in the Cook Islands, the first seven of which were spent at Royale Takitumu. We booked our trip through Costco (they were great), and because our flight from Los Angeles got in around 7 AM, I made sure we had an early check-in at Royale Takitumu, which was complimentary at 10 AM.

Our transfer was waiting for us at the airport and when we arrived, I was fully expecting to be directed to lounge near the pool until our arranged check-in time. Instead, we were cheerfully directed towards our villa to enjoy a nap until check-in time at 10. We settled in for a sort nap in our beach-side villa and the two hours of sleep after arriving in Rarotonga enabled us to enjoy our first day on the islands having had a chance to recuperate.

After our nap, we got to really meet Mei (spelling?) at 10 AM for our orientation. She is a huge part of why we enjoyed our stay at Royale Takitumu; anyone can construct buildings, but it takes the personal touch to make the stay wonderful, and Mei provided this in spades. I don't know what her day off is, but we were there for seven nights and I saw her every single morning! She even stopped in on Sunday (which is a big deal if you know the Cook Islands).

There were some very small things that Royale Takitumu did well that made all the difference. First, Mei knew our names before we arrived and she never forgot them. Every time I passed her, she greated me by name. Second, they had set up large stone bowls full of water at strategic locations for washing sand off of your feet (if you've never had the experience, these are amazing). Finally, our daily breakfast plate was always there before we woke up (usually around 7:30-8:00) and on the one day we went on the cross island trek with Pa, Mei delivered our breakfast the night before.

There were a couple of things that we initially disliked but grew to appreciate on our week there. The first of these was the lack of a sign on the street pointing out the driveway for Royale Takitumu (there is a sign on the beach for walkers). For the first couple of days with out rental car it was difficult to find our way home and we could not understand the lack of a sign. However, after visiting some of the more commercial resorts in Muri, I completely understand; they are differentiating themselves and the lack of a sign is indicative of the quiet, secluded beach-side stay we had. By the end of the trip, I was glad we did not have one, and enjoyed feeling at home as I pulled in to the driveway.

Royale Takitumu is a small place with 10 (I think) villas. On our first morning Mei arranged a tea which was wonderful. She had scratch made muffins that were out of this world, but the best part is that we started to get to know our neighbors (for better or worse, each villa is very private so you don't get to know your neighbors unless you want to). This was very nice as we very quickly became familiar with all of the faces and names of the people we would be seeing for the next week (there is 1 flight/week from the U.S. to Raro).

Towards the end of our stand Mei organized a game of Pétanque and champagne (on the islands, this is any sparkling white wine) which was also lots of fun. It was a good bookend, as by this time, we had made friends with a number of the other guests.

By the time we left for Aitutaki, I was honestly sad to go. Royale Takitumu fills a niche very well: you get high quality service and personal attention in a secluded and peaceful environment. There is no onsite restaurant and so there are no intruders other than other quests.

I've notably left our any comment about the actual accommodations. They were perfect, the bed was made every day before we got back from the beach, we had a working kitchen, wonderful jacuzzi tub, king size beg and A/C (air-con as they call it) in the bedroom. In essence, the villas were as described.

Room Tip: Splurge on the beach front rooms. You can sit on our porch and enjoy the beach even if it is rainin...

Our stay ay Royale Takitumu was the most relaxing, enjoyable time we have had in many years. Mii, the manager was an outstanding hostess, making sure we were made to feel welcome from the start and ensuring we had every bit of information we needed to enjoy our time in the Cook Islands. The pace of the whole island is laid back and relaxed and at Royale Takitumu it is so easy to fit right in with a beautiful beach, crystal clear warm water and incredible snorkeling right on your doorstep. The rooms were well appointed and serviced and very comfortable.
We both would go back tomorrow and recommend others book there for a great relaxing couples holiday.

Room Tip: Beach front rooms are the best by far for views and all very private.

We chose Royale Takitumu from our travel agent at Costco.com. She had been here in 2012 and gave glowing reviews...From the moment we arrived, we were treated like family. This trip was a surprise for my husband's birthday. Our lagoon villa #7 was just about 15 steps down the center path to the beach! They have only 10 villas, so you will not be bothered by a lot of noise or commotion. As we arrived, we were provided with breakfast already in our room - bread for toast, jams, butter, cereals, fresh fruit platter, milk, juice and teas and coffee. It made us feel special after a grueling day of travel and a 10 hour flight to the island. The accommodations were spacious and our jacuzzi tub was large enough for 3...the quiet and solitude there was perfect for total R&R...we were close enough to walk to several restaurants, but did rent a car for two days. The manager held a morning tea for the guests where she served huge homemade muffins with butter and jam, teas and French press coffee. Another day, she provided a game on the lawn by the pool with prizes for the winning couple, along with all sorts of snacks, relishes cheeses and sparkling white wine. Whatever you asked for was handle promptly and courteously. Mii set up reservations for us at a local restaurant, and for a night at the HIghland Paradise dinner show....she recommended it highly and it was just as she had said...well worth the money. We had intended to attend the "Progressive DInner" night, but the owners were on holiday so it was not available. We had absolutely no issues and found the manager Mii to be more helpful than we could have expected. t all times we were treated with respect, care and concern for our every need. The beach is far too beautiful for words. Use their kayaks free of charge or snorkeling gear...reef shoes are provided free as well, along with a small library of books, and games. There is a pool with very comfortable lounges, and usually you were alone...rarely did we see more than one or two couples. They were gracious to provide late check out at 9:30 pm to accommodate our midnight flight back to the U.S. We purchased transfers when booking our trip, which was quite helpful; they were on time, and no tipping here - they find it offensive! Food is expensive here as it is mostly imported. Be sure to take New Zealand dollars and you will have no problem, or use your credit card. The smaller places do not take credit cards, or there is a minimum charge. The beauty and serenity of Rarotonga, along with the calmness of the people there is hard to find elsewhere. There is no rush about anything, and don't worry about bargaining, or having pushy salespeople stalk you - it just does not happen here. There really is no way to say enough about the graciousness of Mii, and Bill R. the owner. Their hospitality exceeded our expectations, and I would not be afraid to highly recommend a visit here...the only thing they cannot do is guarantee 100% sunshine 24/7. I hope to return here someday.

Room Tip: Villa #7 - right on the center path to the beach with gorgeous palm trees framing the walk
