“A French Dream”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2009

Usually when I arrive at a chambre d'hotes after booking on the internet, I find that if I was to climb a tree, hang around a corner and squint into the sunlight I could just about see how they managed to get the one lovely picture for the advert. Not so with this place! It's a real beauty of an old mill, spacious and tastefully decorated with a mixture of antique splendour and modern comfort.

The setting is lovely, very quiet and right on the river, and the owners are very friendly and helpful, without being at all intrusive. The husband speaks excellent English.

It wasn't the cheapest stop-over we've ever had, but it was well worth paying that little bit extra for the 'wow' factor. If you were staying for a few days and visiting Paris then it would be ideal. I understand that it is in easy reach of Disneyland, but that's not quite my cup of tea.

Bernard and Agnes were the perfect hosts, the evening meals were delicious and made the perfect end to a day sitting on the patio above the river eating and drinking wine. Bernard was very helpful in things to do and spoke very good English

The off-street parking involved jumping a curb and parking in a narrow strip between the street and the river, but things quickly got better. We were met at the gate by our jovial host, who helped us carry our luggage across a wide, but somewhat rickety bridge to the small island occupied by our B & B, a former mill on which climbing roses grew profusely, set in a lovely yard.

Our room, La Chambre des Anges, was up a flight of stairs. Our corner windows overlooked the garden and the stream. The room was spacious, comfortable, and nicely decorated, with track lighting. The modern bathroom had a shower and a very large tub. The floors were wooden and squeaked a little, and we could hear the floorboards of the guests above us from time to time, but it was not a problem for us. Neither was the beautiful silvery peal of the bell in the church next door.

We could see a walking trail from our window and explored it the next morning. From the storyboards along the way we learned that we were in La Vallee des Peinteurs de la Grande Morin (Valley of the Painters of the Grand Morin). The Morin was the river on which the mill was located. Impressionist painters had often painted scenes in this valley, including our mill. Later, our host told us that the mill was operating as early as the 16th century.

Our host was not only jovial and enjoyed conversing with us, but he was very helpful as well. He offered to let us use his phone to make several calls to Paris with regard to our next stay, and he used his computer to find several phone numbers for us. Although our hostess apologized for speaking only French, our host's English was excellent, as was his advice about sites to see in Reims and in his small village. We left with fond memories of Le Moulin de Saint Martin.

  • Liked — the good cheer and helpfulness of our host
  • Disliked — I would have liked to see more details on the website.
