This is one of those places that you hope no one else discovers. My husband and I stayed there for a week and could hardly tear ourselves away to go touring around the rest of the countryside. My husband was on R&R and we couldn't have chosen a better spot for that. We stayed in the Pipistrelli unit which is a one bedroom apartment with really charming living/kitchen areas. It was just the right amout of space for two and had a large private terrace off the living area with a view over the Tuscan hillside to the sea (about 5 miles away). There are several houses around the compound of varying sizes that can be rented...also separate rooms. You can rent by the week or by the night. The week that we were there the owners hosted an artists' reception to commemorate the one year anniversary of Fiore's death. They opened her studio and private quarters for all the guests to tour. It was quite spectacular. Her sculpture is placed all over the little hamlet. The owners/hosts are charming and will prepare meals for a group. We ate in the local villages around the area as well as some self-catering. The owners even loaned us some provisions when we ran short. There is a small bar that is open every evening for drinks and watching the sunset. We took walks in the hillside and across over to a nearby village for lunch. Lucca and Pisa are both within an hour drive and the beach about 15 minutes. It was a wonderfully relaxing week and we can't wait to return someday. Don't despair of the steep road and hair-pin turns....once you've been up and down it's a piece of cake!
