“Toured it by chance”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2012

My friend read Klis fortress as the no.1 attraction in Split, but actually it is the no.1 and only attraction in Klis, so without checking, we made our way there. Anyway no regrets.

The entrance fee was 20 kuna and it seems like a deserted fortress without much visitors. We were the only people there, which is good, as we had the place to ourselves. No rushing, no crowd and enjoying the view of split city from the top. There were some constructions and restorations being done, but i guess it will take a few more years before it is completed.

It is a pity there's nothing much to read or any explainations about the place, so that could be an improvement to be made or read up before you go. Enjoy the view and the ruins. It is about an hour drive from split.

“Croatia history witness”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2011

I found Klis fortress the second most impressive in Croatia (after Knin), and strongly recommend visiting it to anyone, especially those interested in military history and fortification.

Klis fortress is located on the top of 340m hill, in about 10km north from Split. This huge complex was very well seen from the road as I drove through the city of Klis, so it was easy to find. From the parking lot at the bottom, the fortress is in a short walk uphill. Wear comfortable shoes to be able to wander around its sizeable ruins.

I didn’t need to be a military geek to immediately estimate strategic location of Klis fortress and to understand why nearly the entire history of Croatia passed through this citadel.

The exact time of its creation is unknown; it must have been erected on the place of the early settlements of ancient Illyrians. The X century records mention the Roman fortress named Kleisa besieged by the Avars and Slavs. And the city of Klis was the seat of the royal courts of King Mislav in 835-845 and Trpimir in 845-864. So at the very least the fortress dates back to IX century. Till about XVI it was owned by Hungarians, who have successfully protected it from Tatars in 1242. After years of defense from the Ottoman empire, in 1537 the fortress was finally captured by Turks, and kept by them till XVII, when the Venetian Republic’s army besieged the citadel. Except for the short period of French ruling, from 1797 and up to WWI it was ruled by Austrians. By the end of the war it was part of the annexed territories that later made part of Yugoslavia.

Nearly each ruler tried to strengthen the fortification and to re-built it according to their needs. This is why today Klis fortress represents a somewhat chaotic complicated structure of walls, gates and towers of different types, which makes it even more interesting to explore. Sadly, there was a reconstruction when I visited, so certain part of the east end of the fortress was restricted to visitors’ access.

In Oct 2011, entry ticket was 20 kuna. There was no museum inside the fortress, and not much information about it available on spot. So do make sure you learn its eventful history before you go! Otherwise you will only be left to browsing through the ruins and enjoying stunning views of Split and the surrounding area from the fortress hill. However, these views alone can be quite a good reason to visit Klis fortress.
