“Wonderful B&B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2012

My husband and I recently made our way from Le Touquet, La Rochelle, Cognac, through to St Claud for a wedding in Cherves-Chatelars. Le Betoulle was undoubtedly the best place we stayed throughout our tour. Penny & John were extremely friendly and helpful, giving us tips of what to see in the region and making us feel very welcome. The rooms were lovely and large, the beds were super comfy, and the breakfasts each morning were delicious (baked figs from the garden, fresh croissants, homemade jam... everything a delight). It was good value for money and we'll definitely return when next in the region.

On the 3rd June we decided to come to France and tour the country to get a feel of the real France. We booked into this B & B for 2 nights and found what we felt was a mini heaven. The cleanliness and rooms were exceptional. There was not one thing that wasn't thought of. Attention to detail was amazing. There was a small kitchen just along the corridor where you could make tea, coffee , microwave to heat food, ironing board, the list goes on. When we came back after a day touring we found a tray laid in the kitchen ready for tea with home made cakes ! I wanted to end the touring here and would have happily stayed the week but we had already commited to other bookings.
Without a doubt we will return when hopefully the weather is a little better and we can make use of the fantastic swimmimg pool and walk the grounds which are extensive.Playing table tennis was great fun. There is so much to do around the area as well. The main thing for me however was the bed was so comfortable , lovely white crisp linen and immaculate bathroom.
I have never written a review before purely because I have never been this impressed, please do not feel therefore feel this does not hold credence because it is my first review. We do holiday a lot and we are always fortunate to stay in nice quality places but this was exceptional.
We will certainly be back

Room Tip: We stayed in the Coral suite but I would think all the rooms are of the same standard

After our one night stay at la Betoulle last year, we returned this year for a weeks stay. This b and b is not your average b and b. La Betoulle has a wonderful setting with a huge swimming pool so plenty of room for everyone. Rooms are beautifully decorated with gorgious bedding. We enjoyed sitting out on the terrace most evenings overlooking the swimming pool which is located outside your bedroom. We enjoyed being able to make our own light meals in a fully equiped kitchen that everyone can use if they want to. We were treated to wine and homemade baking which you wouldnt normally get in a b and b. If you enjoy breakfast then you will enjoy the breakfast at La Betoulle because its fit for a king truely amazing!! If your visiting the Charente then this is the place to stay.

I went with friends to this property and although they have tried to post a review it has not appeared so I thought that I would do it and then hopefully it will come through.
In April this year we made our 10th trip to France and our 8th trip to the Perigord/Limousin/Charente region and it won't be my last trip either. Below is a shortish report of some places of note and things that I think are important i.e. accommodation.

You can take a tour and be shown what other people think you should see OR you can immerse yourself in the French culture and stay at an English speaking establishment ( because it is easier that way) where the owners will help you decide on the best of things to see and do in France for yourself.

We have stayed in many gites in France before but none have come close to the facilities & comfort that Penny & John have put into their gites and into their Bed and Breakfast business at La Betoulle, St Claud, Charente France http://www.manoir-la-betoulle.com/. I must also say that I have stayed twice in the B&B section as well which has the same standard of accommodation but this year we decided to take things easy and stay in one of the gites (holiday cottage on site) at La Betoulle.

La Betoulle is a special place. I have run and owned a B&B since 1999 but Penny and John have set their bar so high that I could never compete. The property has many acres in which one can roam, a large swimming pool, Tennis court and huge outdoor chess set. It is built and furnished more like a stately home than a B&B and Penny is a fantastic cook.

The weather was not very nice for our week but we were more than comfortable in the gite & could not have enjoyed ourselves more. The cottage is of course self contained with a large lounge/dining room, two bedrooms - the main is huge with sitting area and deck surrounding most of the cottage and accessable from the main bedroom and lounge, Kitchen with dishwasher stove and large fridge and everything you could possibly need in equipment. Finally a lovely bathroom and a laundry off the second bedroom which incidently has a washbasin.

There are books everywhere, tour guides and tour information and even information on local French Garage Sales and markets which are a real treat to go to. The Gite has Sat TV, DVD and CD and radio and it is nothing short of a home away from home

Penny’s welcome basket with the home made strawberry jam, macarons & honey from their bees was an absolute treat & we were very grateful for the lovely contents of this basket which included a yummy bottle of French wine.

Thanks too to Penny & John for their suggestions of places to see & enjoy. A particular unexpected delight was a trip to the ‘Valley of the Monkeys’ ( Valley of the Singes) I love animals & I think this zoo has to be one of the best ever. It’s a ‘walk through the animals territory’ no cages except for their sleeping quarters which they can get in and out of. I had an extra special treat in being able to sit on a bench with a lemur sitting right beside me, upside down, legs in the air and sunning itself – Wow! what a memory! Little Tamarins were playing peek-a-boo with us from the roof of one of their huts. I most certainly will head back to this zoo next time I am in France.

There are many beautiful places around this area, namely Angouleme with its old ramparts and beautiful river - take a boat ride on that.

There are also places like Oradour-Sur-Glane which stands as it was left in June 1944 when the Nazis killed all the village people and bombed the village to bits. It is a memorial to those people and there is the cemetary there as well. You can walk the village streets and see the rusted cars still left where they were bombed. A grim reminder of a grim past. I can take up to three hours to see everything there.

Many thanks for your hospitality Penny and John & may you still be at La Betoulle the next time I am back in France.

Room Tip: As I said, we stayed in the Gite which was lovely but any of the bedrooms are lovely and each one h...

Great location. Great hosts; useful advice from them about places to visit, restaurants, shops and tips on French life. All the rooms have a connected large balcony that emphasises the feeling of space and freedom. Driving around those roads is magic. Breakfast is special. The place is peaceful, relaxing, we will certainly visit again.

This trip was our third visit since last Spring, this time in order to sign the final papers on our own Charentaise property! My only regret is that we will have less of an excuse to stay at this lovely Chambre D'Hote in future! Penny and John made the process as stress-free as it could have reasonably been, always ready with advice when requested and having intimate knowledge of the area, from which routes to avoid because of roadworks to the best places to source anything from antiques to dog food! Penny's breakfasts kept us going most of the day, with a wide selection of goodies, both hot and cold, sweet and savoury. There is always a gastronomic adventure to try, often made with home grown produce. You must try some of Penny's home-made jam or honey from La Betoulle's own bees. The location is very convenient for exploring the region and therefore ideal for house hunters. It is easy from St Claud to reach very fast and efficient roads to Angouleme or even Bordeaux as well as north to Confolens and Poitier. A previous reviewer maybe did not find La Platane, the local bar in St Claud which serves good food but has rather erratic hours! Ask Penny and John for their recommendations for local eateries. They are always spot on. La Betoulle is a place to visit if you want to come away feeling "chilled" and that you have been pampered.

Room Tip: All the rooms are lovely and have similar facilities including an ensuite (and we have experienced m...

We stayed in the Lotus suite for a few days last month. The location is very peaceful, and the Manoir beautifully furnished.

Returning back to the Manoir we were greeted by homebaked cakes and the breakfast served by Penny included both hot and cold dishes, and was very tasty.

I would recommend this Chambre D'Hote if you are looking for some peace and calm it will definately exceed your expectations.
