“When is the largest anything not worth a see!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

We love plants to begin with, but this kauri takes the cake! Although the dieback on it is considerable (that would happen to anything 2000 years old) It is still amazing to see something that surmountable size. There are two places to take as many photos as you want. Also has a spec board that tells you all about the tree. God of the Forest it is, and hopefully will be for many years to come.

“Magnificent”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2013

A must see for us tree hugging Kiwis! Could use some more signage as we past the info centre but lost our nerve and went backwards.

“Don't miss it.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2013

Lots of little walks in the very well organised forest. At one place there was a man who sits all day watching the cars for security. Please donate to him.

“Do not pass this by!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2012 via mobile

Only a 5 minute walk over wooded boardwalk from the main highway, this tree is an absolute sight to behold. You cannot describe the majesty of these ancient giants in words....go and see it, you will not be disappointed.

“Tree lover's paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2012

My mother says "a tree is a tree in any country". I'm here to say it isn't. The giant kauri trees in the Waipoua forest are a wonder to behold, if you have any green in your soul. It isn't just that they're huge but they have an extraordinary presence, a majesty, which just doesn't come across in a photo. To stand before them and marvel at the fact that they probably began their lives when Christ was a boy, when the Romans were in Britain and when the Maori hadn't yet arrived in NZ, is truly amazing. The walking tracks are well maintained and easy to negotiate and the Kiwis really know how to build a boardwalk. The main car park has an attendant there most days to keep an eye on your car for $2, so you needn't worry about anyone trying to break into it. This is such a special short trip if you're passing through the area or staying at Hokianga.
