“New Zealand Road Trip 2014”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2014

We didn't stay here just ate a wonderful lunch on the veranda overlooking the bay. Fantastic service and excellent food. We opted for a trio grill cooked on lava stone and brought to the table, also excellent coffee. The accommodation looked great and had views of the bay, unable to comment on the because we stayed at the lighthouse motel a little further up the road.

The historic Opononi pub/tavern/hotel is a great place to eat if you're pasing through this small coastal town in the Hokianga. There is a full menu for lunch and dinner and the meals are great. We stayed in the Opononi area recently and had an evening meal at the pub out on the deck. I had the most delicious beefburger I've ever eaten and my husband ordered battered fish and chips which were equally yummy. It was Quiz Night this nigh and we were invited to join in - the local folk are very friendly and welcoming to visitors to their district.

I had an opportunity to stay at this hotel last week. I found former reviews accurate its not the most inspiring hotel in terms of facilities but I stayed in winter and found a warm friendly welcome and helpful staff. I loved my room (15) which had stunning vies and overlooked the harbour, the decor was off white shabby chic which personally I loved. There was a great shower and the bed was comfy. I had a meal in the bar a wonderful lamb shank with a nice bottle of Hawkes Bay red, wine choice was limited but good. I happened to be there when NZ were playing France so there was a great atmosphere in the pub, people were friendly and staff were helpful professional and I could not fault their service or welcoming attitude. The only complaint I had was there was no breakfast service in the morning but was informed they would have provided something if I had informed them. Overall I would be very happy to go back.

Room Tip: Rooms 15 or 16, have lovely views there were other rooms in cabins above hotel looked lovely but did...

A friendly welcome from a cheerful NZ lady in an uninspiring reception area. Shabby corridor which could do with redecorating and then a lovely light, white, airy room (Number 14) overlooking the coast road, water and far-off hills. We had a very comfortable couple of days here and would like to return. The mattress and bedlinen were very good. The shower was fine in the en-suite bathroom and we thought that it was very good value. The best was sitting on the balcony with a bottle of cold Sauvignon Blanc from the nearby 'Liquor Store'. What a lovely view, and in such a beautiful area of North Island.

Room Tip: Ask the pleasant receptionist to show you the rooms which are available...then choose!

Stayed two nights in this motel with bar across parking. Some descriptions say that it is a resort hotel, but that must be from many years back. Small room 9m2, but rather complete with fittings including coffee, tea, fridge; it was just possible to place the suitcases. Shower room 4m2, small balcony with parking, road and lake view 6m2. Sorry no breakfast, but next to the motel was an early open grocery store so we had breakfast on our mini terrace. The old timber building makes that you hear all neighbours walking in the corridor but at night everything is quiet; no traffic on the road; first cars only at 7:30. They also had larger rooms of 12 m2. Free Wifi inside reception booth. Bar-restaurant from motel with various meals and snacks. Next door also a good fish and chips take-out. In front of stairs area is used for car parking and fresh dog droppings. Although I informed the motel owner, she did not clean the area, so I placed four large orange traffic cones over the droppings so i would not step in them at night; they stayed there for two days to visit the giant Kauri trees; those were awesome indeed and the reason we stayed here.

Room Tip: Some rooms have no view; the small rooms (9m2) are really small. There are bungalows in the raar of...

Travelled up from Auckland expecting a relaxing hotel with sea views and decent facilities. The 'hotel' turned out to be the local watering hole, with live music being played until the early hours of the morning. The (ground floor) room was supposed to have a sea view, ours looked out on the side drive to the rear car park and the back yard of the adjacent fish & chip shop. The bar was crowded, but the restaurant was empty so we ended up eating elsewhere. Our bedroom was just 9'x12' with only a very noisy ceiling fan to cool down the room that the sun had heated up all day. To get some fresh air the bedroom we were forced to leave the french doors open at night - so security was non existent - as was sleep. The last straw was to find out that breakfast was not available until 9:30am - after we were due to check out.

Opononi resort hotel is a good location for exploring that area and the kuari forests. Room was clean and quaint with whitewashed furniture, but could use a little sprucing (like the hole in our wall). Big shower with great water pressure and hot water. Toilet area a little cramped. Bed comfortable. Our room looked out to bay with a great view, but with the view comes noise from the road. Didn't bother us since the road isn't busy at night. You can also hear other guests if they are loud, but again, at night everything was quiet.
The only real con is that the food at the bar and restaurant really isn't great, but very convenient. I would probably try the take-away place on the other side and just get drinks from the bar.
If I needed to stay in the area again I would definitely consider this place, but it seemed that there might be other options that aren't on trip advisor also worth looking into. Overall, not a bad place to stay.
