We were not staying at this hotel but decided to try the restaurant for dinner one evening during our stay in Beer. The dining room is definitely more like a hotel than a restaurant in ambience, which is pleasant enough and reflected the age of the building.
The restaurant was very busy and with the low ceiling where we were seated was quite loud but with a good atmosphere.
The waitress seemed harried and rushed off her feet. I ordered bream fillets and my husband had slow cooked pork belly. Both main components of the dish were good. However, they were let down by very poor accompanying vegetables - watery green beans, leathery carrots and bland broccoli, alll of which bore the hallmarks of the microwave.
Oddly, both boiled and roast potatoes were served and i suspect that Aunt Bessie had a hand in the roasties which were strangely tasteless.
The meal overall was ok enough not to complain about specifics, we were hungry and it was busy, but it did not live up to any of the other culinary experiences we had during our stay in Devon and we will not return here.
