“Relaxed and enjoyable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2013 via mobile

We walked to Beer from Seaton after the Grizzly and were glad we did.
Crackling fires on a cold dark evening, lots of people chatting and willing to chat to us. A couple of pints of Abbott and we were ready to eat. The barmaid explained we needed to order out food at another counter. This we did and found Anna to be really helpful. She brought the food quickly. The liver and mash was a good homely dish and for the vegetarian, cannelloni with salad and garlic bread. It was lovely and hot and Anna came back to check we were ok.
It was our first visit so can't comment on the effects of a change in management discussed in other reviews. We had a lovely evening and would have stayed longer if it hadn't been for the walk back to Seaton.

“Overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2013 via mobile

Had a meal for two coming to £45 albeit with two beers. The sea bass at just under £15 was small whilst the liver and bacon was that, and mash only. Overall was over priced.

“A mixed bag”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

My wife and I stayed at the Anchor for 2 nights in February. The hotel is superbly situated just a few metres from the pebble beach and with all rooms having a sea view. The bedroom was warm and comfortable and had a good hospitality tray, hairdrier and wi-fi availability. The en-suite was clean but was quite small. There was an excellent choice of food, both hot and cold, for breakfast and the cooked meal on the 1st morning was hot and well-cooked. However, on the 2nd morning it arrived cold due to the manager (aka the waiter) spending so much time checking out another guest. The evening meal was fine and represented good value.
And now the gripes......the hotel does not have its own car park and, whilst road parking was available while we were there, I can foresee problems during the busier holiday season. Breakfast on both mornings was eaten to the unmelodic tones of the vacuum cleaner - there was only a window of 1 hour for breakfast so surely the vacuuming could have been done at a different time. And finally, after being reassured by the receptionist on arrival that our bank card details were only required for verification purposes, we found on returning home that we had been charged twice (the problem was sorted quickly but should never have happened in the first place).
All-in-all a disappointing stay for what could have been a most enjoyable experience.

“Overpriced Ploughmans and Arrogant Staff ("crew")”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2013

Called in today for lunch. Greeted by arrogant girl on food counter. Not a smile or friendly greeting. In fact, little eye contact. You have to order tea and coffee at the food counter, and other drinks at the bar, which means if you pay to pay at 2 places. Wanted to have a Ploughmans with cheddar cheese and ham. Was told it would be £3.95 (!) extra to add either cheese or ham. So we decided to have one of each and to share. When they arrived, there was one piece of cheese on the cheese Ploughmans, and 2 thin slices of ham on the ham Ploughmans. The salad looked like it was out of a bag, the gherkins and small white pickled onions tasted like they were out of cheap bottles. Not a great lunch, and we needed the toilet soon afterwards. We have had much better elsewhere.

“A Beer in Beer and a Bite”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

Took a ride into Beer just to see what was there and were lucky to find The Anchor.Arrived too late really for the lunch menu but the friendly staff said they would have a quick word with the kitchen to see if they could manage to conjure up fish & Chips for two.Excellent fish, hot, fresh and very well cooked. I see many reviews rate the inn highly and from our experience of the location I can see why. The beer was good as well !!
