“We had a fab time lovely and relaxing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2009

We had room No 6 which had views over the pool and sea was lovely.Rooms are quite spacious and have plenty of storage for clothes the only down side was there is no toaster supplied. As in must places in Greece the rooms are rather basic and you have to pay for air cond which is EUR55 a week. The pool is lovely and clean and as for the pool bar it was fab its run by a guy called Lefteris who is independant to the hotel and nothing is too much of a problem for him.He is a really lovely guy who works so we very hard.Every now and again he would bring you free melon and greek yogurt etc around the pool. The only thing i would say is that it is quite expensive in Crete and if you are on a budget i would suggest taking stuff with you as that is what a lot of people had done. The beach was very clean lovely sand and the water very clear. There is not really a lot to do at Crete its very quite we found it very relaxing and completly chilled out.We are hoping to go back again in May next year.If you are going there please say hi to Lefteris for us tell him Richard and Ruth will see him next year.

We arrived at Mirabello Apartments to be greeted by the owner’s two sons, who barely spoke to us but merely pointed towards the stairs, indicating that our apartment was on the third floor. We were not given any help with our luggage and considering that my friend is 62 years old and I am a woman, I was shocked at the lack of courtesy. They had no interest in their guests whatsoever. The hotel was also the only building that wasn’t south facing! Our idea of sitting outside in the morning to have breakfast was not to be as the ballcony was in the shade, it was too windy and too cold. The sun only reached our balcony after 6pm by which time we only had two hours before the sun set.

The bathroom was the biggest concern as there was an open shower with only a ill-fitting curtain, which is supposed to contain the water within the shower area. It didn't and there was water on the floor at all times making it extremely dangerous to walk on. Other guests reported similar problems, even worse, some had no water to flush their toilets.

In the room was a welcome pack stating that there would be a "welcome" meeting with refreshmments at 10:00am the next morning for all new guests. The meeting was hosted by an inexperienced tour guide who was competing against the noise of planes constantly flying above our heads. After one hour of this, in the considerable heat, the owner was eventually persuaded to provide a drink which turned out to be the worst type of orange squash.

There is a pool bar with the barest minimum of stock. This bar is unmanned throughout the day until the owner's sons arrive in the late afternoon. The sons had absolutely no intention of serving their guests but spent their whole time on duty outside the bar making very loud telephone calls. To obtain any food, drink, ice-creams etc. required a journey down a steep hill andonto the main road to find the nearest shop. Not at all convenient if you are in your swimwear. It is obvious that the bar is only included to obtain a higher rating for the apartments.

The owner was a miserable, grumpy old man, he didn't speak a word of English, didn't smile at his guests and spent most of his time attending to his garden which appears to be his only interest. Guests are a barely tolerated inconvenience who are there only to provide a source of income. His sons are obviously being groomed to carry on this family tradition.

To make matters worse, within two days of our stay, the road which runs parallel to the pool was full of builders carrying out major repairs to the pipes. The smell of sewage, the dust from the drilling, not to mention the noise. This road is the main link to to the town and shops and is dangerous at the best otf times. Imagine the scene: sunbathing by the pool; unable to get refreshments; the smell, noise and dust of the roadworks; and above our heads, the owner busy harvesting fruit from the trees. After five days of putting up with this we decided to leave and checked into Alexandra Beach Hotel, a five star hotel across the road. What a difference that made to our whole holiday experience, the peace and quiet, the service, the facilities, the courtesy we received from the profressional staff, we were treated like royalty.

I cannot stress enough how awful the Mirabello Apartments are and they bear no comparison to the lower-rated appartments we stayed in the previous year. Last of all I should mention that the hotel is facing a cemetery ! You have been warned: please think carefully before going to the Mirabello Apartments.
