“Luxury is a matter of opinion”

Villa Caletas

We stayed at Villa Caletas for our final 3 nights in Costa Rica and this was a mistake as it was our least favourite hotel of the three we visited. It has decent rooms and amazing views but really believes it's something it is not (if you compare it with luxury hotels in the USA). This is a fine hotel, but not a luxury hotel.
Before we arrived we met a couple who stayed here and they recommended we get a car because the hotel is very secluded. They were right. The hotel is 6 kms (I guess) from the nearest decent shops/restaurants which you will be desperate to go to once you see the prices the hotel wants to charge for basics (like breakfast which wasn't included in our rate - check this before booking). We simply felt cheated at every turn and couldn't believe that prices here at the restaurant, in the shop etc were more than in NYC where we currently live. Don't forget your sunscreen or you'll be shelling out $20+ for a small bottle of the stuff.
The rooms felt old and certainly need decorating - we asked to change rooms and they were nice enough to offer us an upgrade but when we looked at these rooms - the "villas" - they were smaller than ours and had less balcony space so we stayed where we were. Our room had no iron, and a safe with a key (haven't they heard of the electronic safes that every other hotel in the world uses). The bathroom in our room was totally basic. No shower cap, robes, slippers or other vanity supplies. How many stars has this place and how much was I paying?!
Other facts:
The private beach is quite nice but not sandy. No good for swimming really - my husband tried.
We saw some wildlife here - a pair of scarlet macaws was the highlight. A nice treat.
We had breakfast once which was tasty but too expensive. We has lunch a couple of times and it was like cheap bar food but again too expensive.
Our room was not ready when we arrived at 2pm.
The staff were friendly and tried to help whenever possible to improve things.
Unusual architecture - very pretty and rather European.
The pool is beautiful.
The grounds are very clean.
The gift shop contains some pretty items.
My husband and I are a young couple and Villa Caletas seems to attract older people (which is fine if you are older).
There is creepy music playing everywhere when we simply wanted peace.

We were disappointed and would not go here again. The hotel rooms need renovating and the hotel needs to think a little less of itself. I would recommend a drive up to the hotel for a drink at sunset as the views are pretty.

“A wonderful experience”

Villa Caletas

I had to take three different groups of executives to see the Central Pacific area in Costa Rica.
I decided to go to Villa Caletas because I had been there before, and their prices compared to Marriott Los Suenos were far more attractive.
The groups were small, each time we were 5 persons, requiring 5 separate rooms. We used the hotel as a base to visit the area, usually had breakfast and dinner there, and I came up with superb congratulations from all of my guests.
The professional service, the amenities, the spectacular views and sunsets, magnificent food offerings, and the tropical adventure the hotel is in itself, are to be recomended without hesitation.
Thank you to all the staff of Villa Caletas.

We stayed at Villa Caletas on the final night of our wonderful Cosat Rican adventure. My feelings on this hotel are mixed. The hotel is beautiful, but perhaps not in keeping with a tropical setting. The pool area and ampitheater are lovely, and the views were outstanding (but no better than anywhere else we had stayed in the country). The problem is that somehow, it just doesn't blend in with Costa Rica. This was the 3rd hotel we had stayed in and the most expensive. Our Standard Deluxe room was also the smallest room we had stayed in by far. The hallways and indoor areas of the hotel also had a strong musky smell, and were very dark ( heavy wood paneling, etc.). Breakfast does not come with your room and is pricey. The restaurants on site are supposed to have wonderful cuisine, but we were afraid we would be woefully underdressed in our vacation attire, so we ordered an "italian" sandwich from room service. What we got was a sandwich consisting of 2 pieces of bread, a thin slice of proscuitto and cheese. There was nothing else. It cost $20! The expectations that were set for this hotel were high, and when you compare the accomodations here with the other sites we had stayed, I found Villa Caletas lacking. While I would not tell anyone they shouldn't stay here, I would tell them that if they are looking for a "tropical paradise", there are better options.

When we first arrived at Villa Caletas, it was so classy looking that I was afraid the staff would be cold and stuck up. However, that was not the case. The employees were all extremely friendly and personable, and the concierge was very helpful.

The best thing about Villa Caletas? The views, of course! Since it is built on a cliff overlooking both rainforest and the Pacific Ocean, the views can't be beat. Unfortunately, because it was the rainy season, we were unable to see the sunset (it is supposedly breathtaking from the outdoor ampitheater).

The restaurant had delicious food that was surprisingly reasonably priced. (Try the mussels. Mmmmm....) We had an aromatherapy couples massage that was also out of this world (also reasonably priced)!

They provide a shuttle to their own private beach as well. My only caution is that it is rocky with only a small section of sand. The staff made sure to forewarn us of this ahead of time, so it was no surprise.

We did have a small ant problem on our first night. We called the front desk and it was IMMEDIATELY taken care of. They even offered to give us a different room without us even asking!!!

Even though it is expensive, be sure to spend at least one night at the Villa Caletas Resort! We are sure you will love it!

My wife and I just returned from a belated honeymoon at the incredible Villa Caletas.

You arrive and are greeted with cool towels and ice tea at check in. They help you to your room with a smile and make sure you want for absolutely nothing. The restaurants are wonderful and the servers are friendly and knowledgeable. Most of the staff are fluent in English making the experience that much easier for those nervous about traveling abroad and any potential language barriers. The Villas are beautiful, with exceptional views but the absolute best value at Villa Caletas comes int he form of their brand new Jr. Suites on the opposite site of the property. With room numbers in the 80's (ex. 85, 86, 87,...) these rooms are gigantic, clean, new (about a year or so old) and come with a hammock and private jacuzzi on their 100ft wide private terraces.

Traveling into Jaco for provisions (water bottles, soda, snacks) is only a $13.00/15 minute one wway trip. Complaints about the trip are without merit.

The infinity pool is perfect. The right temperatur, the right view, never crowded even when the hotel is fully booked, and with staff always available to bring you a drink or snack.

The spa has the same view as the infinity pool and is run in an efficient, clean, and very soothing way. Our couples massage was lovely and rivaled those we have found at big name spas here in the states.

Please do yourself a favor and stay here once in your life. You will talk about it forever.
