We stayed at Villa Caletas for our final 3 nights in Costa Rica and this was a mistake as it was our least favourite hotel of the three we visited. It has decent rooms and amazing views but really believes it's something it is not (if you compare it with luxury hotels in the USA). This is a fine hotel, but not a luxury hotel.
Before we arrived we met a couple who stayed here and they recommended we get a car because the hotel is very secluded. They were right. The hotel is 6 kms (I guess) from the nearest decent shops/restaurants which you will be desperate to go to once you see the prices the hotel wants to charge for basics (like breakfast which wasn't included in our rate - check this before booking). We simply felt cheated at every turn and couldn't believe that prices here at the restaurant, in the shop etc were more than in NYC where we currently live. Don't forget your sunscreen or you'll be shelling out $20+ for a small bottle of the stuff.
The rooms felt old and certainly need decorating - we asked to change rooms and they were nice enough to offer us an upgrade but when we looked at these rooms - the "villas" - they were smaller than ours and had less balcony space so we stayed where we were. Our room had no iron, and a safe with a key (haven't they heard of the electronic safes that every other hotel in the world uses). The bathroom in our room was totally basic. No shower cap, robes, slippers or other vanity supplies. How many stars has this place and how much was I paying?!
Other facts:
The private beach is quite nice but not sandy. No good for swimming really - my husband tried.
We saw some wildlife here - a pair of scarlet macaws was the highlight. A nice treat.
We had breakfast once which was tasty but too expensive. We has lunch a couple of times and it was like cheap bar food but again too expensive.
Our room was not ready when we arrived at 2pm.
The staff were friendly and tried to help whenever possible to improve things.
Unusual architecture - very pretty and rather European.
The pool is beautiful.
The grounds are very clean.
The gift shop contains some pretty items.
My husband and I are a young couple and Villa Caletas seems to attract older people (which is fine if you are older).
There is creepy music playing everywhere when we simply wanted peace.
We were disappointed and would not go here again. The hotel rooms need renovating and the hotel needs to think a little less of itself. I would recommend a drive up to the hotel for a drink at sunset as the views are pretty.
