“Gorgeous resort!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2013

This hotel is so beautiful. Such scenic views and an amazing pool that is massive. All the staff is very nice as well. The food is ok and you can walk to the marina/take a cab to Jaco as well for dinner. This is great for families/couples. The rooms are super nice too and very clean. Highly recommended.

Marriott plainum member here.
The good:
This resort is beautiful. They gave me a room that faced the ocean and waking up everyday to this view was the best. Get it if you can. This is why I gave it 2 stars.

The bad:
The hotel is a bit out of the way so a car is absolutely necessary. Watch out for the mandatory insurance they don't mention when you reserve the car online, but tell you about once you arrive. This area of Costa Rica is you guessed it really touristy/expensive and eating/drinking in this hotel is one of the most expensive endeavors I've ever set my sights on. Save some money by eating in the neighboring town Jaco and getting some food and drinks at the grocery up the road.

The really bad:
You are not allowed to being guests into the hotel. I was not told this at check-in or at time of reservation, but apparently I was supposed to have known. When I tried to bring a few friends staying in a nearby hotel to check out the Marriott resort they did not allow it. They told me my friends would not be allowed in and that they ALWAYS check that everybody is a registered guest (this is a lie as this was the first time I was ever stopped). If my friends didn't volunteer the info they would have not known. The people that run this hotel lied to my face and did not handle my concerns with the slighest sense of urgency or importance. The people I'm talking about are specifically Carlos in Security and Andrey (Manager on duty). Terrible job and poor marks on this resort for hiring people that are not credible and very poor when it comes to customer service. Bottom line - I will not be staying here again. Good thing this hotel doesn't have a monopoly on Costa Rican beauty

Room Tip: Ocean facing

I have been in many 4 and 5 star hotels in different countries, and this hotel is definitely not up to 5 star standards. It is missing essentials in the rooms, such as slippers. And just because it is a hotel on the beach (which is their excuse), does not mean they should not have slippers available. Also the walls are not very thick so noise travels.
The food is average and most of the time extremely greasy and extremely overpriced for what it is. Some of the staff is very unfriendly, especially one woman at the front desk who acts very bitter most of the time.
The Herradura beach (in front of the hotel) is dirty and definitely not the nicest beach around.
If you are thinking about a holiday in Costa Rica, I would recommend any other place but this '5 star' hotel...

Lovely property with excellent staff and great amenities. Stayed here during a friend's destination wedding and would highly recommend it to others looking at Costa Rica for theirs. The property is gorgeous and it's a great place for your visitors. Don't miss a visit to the Marina shops and restaurants and the infinity pool!

Room Tip: Rooms on floors 2-4 have the best views. 1st floor rooms are true garden level.

I only visited the La Iguana course for a day golf outing. The staff was very friendly/helpful and tee times were widely available. [Tip: play in the morning as it frequently rains in the afternoons.] The course itself was a little water-logged in that it had rained heavily for two days prior. Nike SQ driver and irons are available for an additional $US60 (which includes 6 balls). Very scenic and challenging course. My chief complaint was with the greens: the type of grass used does not lend itself to close cutting. You really have to pound your putts, or they will stop 2 feet short!

Oh, and don't even think about searching for your ball if it enters into the surrounding flora/fauna. (Without leaving my cart, I saw iguanas (Duh!), a coati and plenty of signage for snakes and crocodiles.)

We were greeted by very kind and helpful bell hops. They not only assisted us with our bags, but made our experience a special one. Sergio was most helpful during our stay. The morning buffet is a must! The view from our room was spectacular. The hotel is in close walking distance to the Marina, where we would have dinner, cup of coffee or drinks. They also have a nice coffee shop right on the property. As a guest, you can enjoy the workout facilities that are located in the Spa area. They have state of the art equipment and everything you need, with refreshing cucumber water and fruit available. For $10.00 more, you have access to the spa for the day, which provides showers, locker room, relaxation areas, sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi and a coed lounge that overlooks the tennis courts. My guess is, this hotel would be the best on the island.
