“Worth a visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2013

Very worthwhile climb up to the top of the hill here for great views over Hanga Roa, the sea, hills and farmland. The top knots created from the stone quarried here I think it is called Huni Huni.
Take your Tourist ticket in case it is requested by a park warden.

“Different from the rest...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

Nice to see the different coloured stone that is quarried in this area to make the top hats or the top knots as they are referred... It's got a nice vista view of the village and Rano Kau.

“A part of the story, see where they made the red headstones”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

You can still see many of the headstones on their way out, many broken and left where they fell. The quarry is mainly grassed over now but still worth a stop. You also get a view of the local fields that are no longer cultivated.

“Where do we get the red topnots?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2013

This is the remains of a small quarry that had a red volcanic stone that the Rapa Nui people used for the topnots of their Moai. This was the main source of red scoria rock, which was used for the construction of the pukao "hat", visible on the heads of some of the many moai statues.

These pukao it seems were added at a later stage in the history of moai making and were put on only the biggest moai at the most important ceremonial sites or ahu.In fact there are less than 100 pukao to have been found and 30 of them are still in this quarry area of Puna Pau Historians seem to think they were added to make their Moai more impressive in a kind of tribal rivalry.

The other benefit of visiting this site is that once you have climbed to the top of the hill you get a fabulous view of Hanga Roa and out to the sea beyond.

Be warned that yet again there are no toilets here so you will have to drive somewhere to find some.

There is no individual charge for this site as it is once again part of the Rapa Nui National Park so covered by the general entrance fee to the park. You should carry you ticket at all times while visiting the sites.

“Another piece in the Jigsaw”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013

The pukao that sit so uncomfortably on top of the moai statues were quarried from the red scoria on this site. The explanation boards on site were not readable when we were there from what looked like a mixture of wearing from the weather and frustrated visitors. It is therefore worth making sure you have a guide book or leaflet before you visit. The Pukao mined here were rolled to sites all over the island, increasing the height of the moai but rarely looking like they were made as a precision fit.
