My boyfriend and I stayed at Mana Ora (cabin 1) for 7 nights at the beginning of March and we could not have been happier with the choice we made! The cabin was beautiful, modern, and very comfortable, and just as pictured from the photos we had seen! Petero was a wonderful host and was very friendly and welcoming. But just as stated in previous reviews, he was very unintrusive.
We flew from Lima to Easter Island, so we landed about 630 AM. Petero met us at the airport with leis. On the drive to the cottage he took us through town and pointed out the important places: market, farmers market, rental car agency, etc. He also showed us around the cabin. In addition, Petero's wife had a wonderful little breakfast all ready and waiting for us when we arrived. It was perfect! We also got to see our first sunrise that morning from the cabin's front porch. It was spectacular: especially when a lone Moai appeared out of the darkness! It was the perfect little start to a wonderful week's stay on the island!
The location of the cabin from town is about a 25 minute walk (and I'm a fast walker)! I would definitely recommend renting a jeep. We rented a jeep the second day and we kept it until the day we flew out. It is so easy to drive around the island and it really gives you the freedom to enjoy the island to the fullest! I would also recommend trying to get your hands on the book "A companion to Easter Island.". It is the next best thing to having a private guide! We were planning on hiring a private guide for a day or two; but the book provided us with so much information on every site that we felt we didn't need one. I was lucky enough to find a copy of the book on Amazon. However, we saw the book being sold all over the island, including most shops in town. It was an invaluable asset. My book is so tattered now as I must've read through it at least 20 times and I carried it everywhere!!!!
As for Mana Ora, I could not imagine a more perfect or tranquil place to stay on Easter Island! We enjoyed the views from the cottage as well as sitting on the porch every evening and looking at the stars. It was also such a nice treat to sleep with the windows and doors wide open and not have anything to worry about (we live in downtown Chicago)! It was really the perfect and most relaxing vacation ever. We cannot wait to return to Easter Island and to Mana Ora!!!!
Just a few tips: make sure you watch sunset at Tahai at least once. Go and see a show (we enjoyed Vai Te Mihi). Make sure to eat at least once at Miro. Not only is it the closest restaurant to Mana Ora, it is delicious! And it has a lot of dishes that are reasonably priced (p.s. their pizzas are big and very tasty)! And if you plan on going to the beach, make sure to bring your own beach towels or a sarong. Mana Ora does not have any beach towels to use and they are quite expensive to buy on the island (and hard to find).
